Lesson Title:
Using Multiple Strategies (Tape Diagram) to Solve Word Problems
Provide a rationale for why you chose to teach this lesson at this time. Where is the lesson
located within the unit (in relation to previously studied topics and ideas to be studied in the
future)?

I chose to teach this lesson because the students just finished learning how to use the tape
diagram to compare addition, multiplication, and division. The students also finished learning
how to use the tape diagram to solve word problems that involve addition, multiplication, and
division. This lesson serves as a check point for student understanding in creating an appropriate
tape diagram using the correct operations and for being able to use what they know to create
their own word problems.

Grade Level: Standard(s):

4th Grade 4.OA.A.1 – Represent multiplication and
Subject: division using tape diagrams
Math 4.OA.A.2 – Solve multiplication and division
word problems
4.OA.A.3 – Solve addition word problems
4.NBT.B.5 – Use strategies to multiply and
divide multi-digit numbers
What are the primary learning goals?
 Students will be able to use the tape diagram to solve a word problem
 Students will be able to create and solve their own word problem
 Students will be able to use different strategies to solve a word problem
Differentiation Strategies: (Content, Process, Product)
To differentiate my lesson, I will use multi-sensory forms during my instruction. I will have
students move around in the classroom through brain breaks and through the activity. I will also
have the students use their whiteboards to solve the word problems for my visual learners. I will
have a small group after my lesson with students that need it most.

Focus Student Maya (High): Have her provide justification on her answers. Must use operations
that are not restating equation.

Focus Student Andrew (Low): Identify the operation that the word problem is asking for. Provide
manipulatives as an example for how to draw tape diagram and the sizing of the boxes.

instructions for what students understand
is expected of them what needs to be on
when they go on to their charts and to
create their own and listen to the
when they present instructions of what
they need to do in
their groups. They will
also get instructions
on how to present in
front of the class as
well as how to
provide feedback to
their peers.

going to present their presenting their
charts to the class charts is to allow for
their peers to see
what they created
and be able to
determine what they
see on the charts. The
students will
showcase what they
know and how they
arrived to their
answers.
15 mins Students work on The exit pass serves Individual
their Exit Pass as my assessment to
check for student
understanding on
how to solve word
problems using tape
diagram and if the
students are able to
create and solve their
own word problems.
