THE PROBLEM AND ITS BACKGROUND

Introduction

Electrical Installation and Maintenance is one of the specializations that are

offered by Technical Vocational Livelihood Strand (TVL). The curriculum is designed

to prepare students with entry knowledge and manipulative skills for employment in

the electrical industry. The program combines theory with laboratory activities as an

effective means of developing the skills essential to electrical trade.

The student begins with the fundamentals of electricity and wiring of simple

circuits, and then progresses to residential interior wiring, three phase alternating

current power, and wiring of more complex circuits and equipment. Safety is the

priority while working; it is stresses as an integral part of each shop task. Emphasis is

placed on wiring in accordance with the provisions contained in the National

Electrical Code (Teraizumi, 2011).

Electrical wiring is done by installing, repairing, and maintaining wiring,

switches, conduits, circuit breakers, and lighting. A student should need to learn

electrical knowledge and trouble-shooting skills to provide maintenance services.

Before a student can perform a residential wiring, they must practice first in a board

wiring installation to ensure that they are ready and capable in performing

electrician’s work.

Board wiring installation requires skills, strategy, and attitude in a student. It

cannot perform easily without it or else they may face difficulty that may cause poor
2

performance. It requires the student to know how to interpret diagram into an actual

wiring installation. Every student must have self-confidence so that when the time

comes in operating their installation they will not be afraid that may cause deduction

of points. Initial testing and final testing is also important to know by every electrical

student for them to make sure that their wiring installation is functioning and safe.

Every student has different skills which is really affecting their performance in

the installation. Some are blessed and some are not. There are students that gain skills

because of their hard work while there are those who cannot finish the installation

because of lacking in skills, knowledge, and strategy. There are times that they are

afraid when it comes in operating their installation because they do not yet know how

to perform initial testing and final testing which is very important to every electrical

to know if their work is correct and safe --- scared of experienced in being

electrocuted because of wrong installation of wires.

This could become a problem in every student under this specialization. Getting

poor performance in wiring installation can result to a low grade. This study shows

the factors that are affecting the poor performance of the electrical students that may

lead into failing grades, and also the possible solution that may help students that are

struggling towards to their poor performance in wiring installation.

Background of the Study

The researchers choose this topic to find out the factors affecting the academic

performance in Board wiring installation among Grade 12 Electrical Installation and

Maintenance students in Amaya School of Home Industries school year 2019-2020

3

because there are students that still struggling in performing board wiring installation.

The researchers also want to know why the students are having difficulties in

performing the installation.

Based on the experiences of our informants, who the researchers are also belong

in the said specialization. There are students that still struggling in interpreting

electrical diagram into an actual wiring. They also stated that there are skilled students

who can finish the installation in the required time but do not have enough

self-confidence when operating their installation, in fear of experiencing in being

electrocuted if there are wrong joints of wires.

The ultimate goal of technical vocational education is for the acquisition of

knowledge, attitude, and practical skills for sustainable development. Its training is

based on the production of goods and services that are not only relevant to themselves

but to the society. The students who undergo training in Electrical Installation

understanding in diverse skills in the trades as expected to possess skills for design,

development, production, excellence in installation of electrical management and

utilization of trending machines and equipment, maintain nerve electrical devices and

circuits (Condesa, 2019).

The aim of this study is to know the factors that affect the poor performance in

performing board wiring installation among Grade 12 Electrical Installation and

Maintenance students. In the same manner, this also determines the possible solution

that will help the students in improving their skills.

This research will be conducted in Amaya School of Home Industries located at

Sahud-Ulan, Tanza, Cavite. The school was established by virtue of Republic Act No.

3987 which was approved on June 18, 1964. It is one of the pioneer school in Cavite
4

province that offers quality education in terms of technical skills developments. It is

also one of the most competitive school in Tech-Voc expositions, campus journalism,

and academic contests. Until a year ago Amaya School of Home Industries offers

different specializations and Electrical Installation and Maintenance is one. It offers

Electrical Installation and Maintenance for the students who dreams to be an electrical

engineer. It also prepares the students for an assessment on getting National

Certificate which proves that the student are competent and can do electrician’s work

without the guide of their teacher.

The framework shows the flow from input to output and the following procedure

that the researchers will follow. The first step that the researchers will do is to make

survey questionnaire and determine the sampling sample size that will be used. The

second step is gathering data through distributing survey questionnaires and analyse

the data then interpret it. The last step is to know the factors that affect the poor

performance in performing board wiring installation among Grade 12 Electrical

Installation and Maintenance students at Amaya School of Home Industries.

Theoretical Framework

The research study is supported by theory of wiring by Ashish Pol (2013),

electrical wiring in homes began when electrical lights and telephones were installed

in houses, at the end of the 19th century. In this technologically developed world, there

is electrical wiring in every corner of the house. It is very important to have an

electrically secure home, for the safety of your family. To have a safe home, quality

wiring is very important. Right from personal computers, air conditioners, kitchen

appliances to house lighting, wiring is used everywhere in the home. With technology

growing rapidly in today’s world, safety solutions for your home are easily available.

To have effective house wiring solutions, we have given some important points below

that you need to keep in mind.

The most important factor to remember before starting any electrical work is the

quality of wires that are going to used. Good quality of wires and cables are a must for

the safety of your family. If quality of the products are reliable, then life becomes
7

stress-free and easier. Mishaps like short circuits can lead to unpredictable fire

accidents. So, in order to secure your future, use quality electrical essentials that are

reliable. There are many branded companies that produce quality products after a

detailed quality check. As it is said, 'It is better to spend a little extra today, than to

spend all of it tomorrow'.

Good quality of electrical cables is also an important point to keep in mind. These

cables are used for in-house elevators, for a commercial complex or residential

buildings. They are used to pull heavy items and are made by bonding two or more

wires, which can be braided or twisted together. This makes the cables more flexible.

To lengthen the life of these cables, a thin layer of another metal like gold or silver is

used. These metals are less prone to oxidation, compared to copper. For an in-house

elevator, good quality cables are advisable for the safety of your family. Cables that

have a tin, silver or gold coating work best in big homes, because of their longer life

span.

In the technologically advanced society, it is essential that everyone possesses

sound knowledge on quality wiring and in-house electrical issues. Effective house

wiring is a very integral part of everyone's life, which is often ignored. People take

every necessary precaution for the safety of their family; however, they tend to ignore

the fact that using sub-standard electrical cables can compromise on their safety. A

home that is not built with quality wiring is equivalent to a house of terror. Thus, it is

very important to take necessary precautions and use electrical appliances, in the

safest way.

Ashish Poly has a vast knowledge in the world of wires and cables. He shares his

knowledge to spread more awareness on the use of electrical cables.

9

Scope and Delimitation

This study highlights the grade 12 Electrical Installation and Maintenance

students at Amaya School of Home Industries which is located at Brgy. Sahud-Ulan,

Tanza, Cavite. The main purpose of this study is to determine the factors affecting the

poor performance of the Grade 12 Electrical Installation and Maintenance students in

board wiring installation and also in the same manner this study will also find possible

solutions that will help the students in terms of improving their wiring skills. The

respondents of this study will be the two sections in Grade 12. There are 50 totals of

electrical students when the two sections are combined together. These respondents

will be enough for the researchers to gather data. Additionally, the researchers will

utilize the use of survey questionnaires to gather the required and needed data. Also

the survey questionnaire contains series of question that will be given or distributed to

the respondents. Answering the survey questionnaires correct and with honesty will be

expected by the researchers.

This study exclude the junior high school students of E.I.M because of their

schedule of classes which is shifting that may cause problem on the survey. It also

excluded the grade 11 E.I.M students and one section in the Grade 12 because of their

work immersion. It did not also include the other core competencies in Electrical

Installation and Maintenance since the researchers’ only noticed that there are Grade

12 E.I.M students are still struggling in board wiring installation.

CHAPTER II

REVIEW OF RELATED LITERATURE

This chapter presents the related literature and studies after the thorough and in-depth

search done by the researchers.

Local

Based from the study entitled “Factors Which Affect the Performance of TLE

Students” by Delos Santos (2010), there are factors which affect the performance of

TLE students profile in terms of age, gender, occupation of parents and their

educational attainment are variables that contribute to the performance of the students,

parental support to the students and their performance of the student. However,

Garduque (2012) in his study stated that learning theories were not enough needs to

have skills to do things. Those skills are technical skills and livelihood programs

which may help the students and graduate to become skilled workers of the factors.

Technical skills are known as specific skill which the person may possess through

learning and practice. Technical skills can be acquires through experience of pursuing

it as specialization. But how these skills affect the academic performance of the

student? Students’ academic accomplishments and activities, perceptions of their

coping strategies and positive attributions, and background characteristics (i.e., family

income, parents’ level of education, guidance from parents and number of negative

situations in the home) were indirectly related to their composite scores, through

academic achievement in high school. The students face a lot of problems in

developing positive study attitudes and study habits. Guidance is of the factor through

which a student can improve his study attitudes and study habits and is directly

proportional to academic achievement. The students who are properly guided by their
12

parents have performed well in the exams. Teacher also affects the student

performance. The guidance from the parents and the teachers indirectly affect the

performance of the students

Based from a study entitled “Factors Affecting the Student’s Academic

Performance” by Garcia (2017), There are several factors affecting the student’s

performance. Some are home, school, teacher, and student factors. Most of the factors

are home related: family size, financial burden, work at home, parental attitude towards

education and parenting style. When it comes to school, the relationship between the

teacher and the students and the distance of the school from home are some factors that

affect. However, the student himself or herself contributes to the case particularly the

peer group influence. It reflects the student’s values and priorities when it comes to the

life’s choices. For example, the choice to study hard and give a focus on the study. The

teacher qualities and capabilities also affect the performance of the students in their

studies. Some of the attributes of the teacher like teaching experience, teacher attitude

towards students, and teacher training can highly affect the student’s perception on the

study. Parents play a very important role in the process. They should affect their

presence and availability in times that the learners need their presence. They should

support and sustain the studies of their children through financial stability. But more

than that is the affection, the love, and care that student must feel so that they will be

inspired to go further in their studies. “A student educational success contingent heavily

on social status of student’s parents/ guardians in the society” Graetz (1995). In the

same perception, the parent’s income or social status can positively affect the student’s

performance in the school. The geographical location of the school is another factor

that affects the student’s performance. The school setting must be accessible to the

transportation and other public amenities that add comfort to the ways of life. Student’s
13

effort and initiative is another factor being considered as well as the age of the student.

Moreover, the learning preferences of the learners must also be put into the limelight.

The aptitude or the learner’s skills must be honed and well directed because the

student’s progress will depend on how their interest is tapped and developed.

Multi-intelligences should be strengthened to give justice as to what the learners are

inclined into.

The academic performance of the learners must therefore be viewed on the

aforementioned factors and may this article provide some ideas for some corrective and

tangible measures that would lead to the understanding of the issue.

Kochhar (2000) says proper guidance is necessary to help the students with

problems like lack of correlation between talent and achievement, faulty study

practice, imperfect methods of learning. Researches have demonstrated that the

performance of the students depended upon several factors like, learning facilities,

age and gender differences. The most significant factor with the positive outcome on

the performance of the students is competence of students in English. Students having

good communication skills it expands the students’ performance (Abdullah, 2011).

William & Burden (1997) found that language classrooms inculcate confidence

among students to use the new language to communicate, to discuss, to try new ways

of conveying meanings and to be trained from failures and successes. Robert and

Sampson (2011) investigated that the students who effectively participate in the

learning procedure are seen to have a higher CGPA (cumulative grade point average).

Noble (2006), found that academic activities of students, perceptions of their adapting

strategies and background qualities (for example family pay, direction from parents,

number of negative circumstances in the house and parents’ level of education) were

indirectly connected to their compound scores, during academic achievement in

14

secondary school. Direction is a component through which a student knows how to

progress his study approach and study schedule and is directly corresponding to

academic accomplishment. The students who are appropriately guided by their

guardians have done well in the exams. The direction from the educator also

influences performance of the students. The guidance from the guardians and the

educators indirectly influence the students’ performance

(Hussain, 2006). Raychauduri et al. (2010) examined that various studies have

been concluded to recognize those variables which are influencing academic

performance of the students. The academic performance of the students also rely on a

various socioeconomic variables like students’ participation in the class, family pay,

and teacher-student ratio, presence of qualified teachers in school and gender of the

student. Several studies have also been done on the impact of peer influence on

student performance.

Foreign

According to a study entitled “Technical Skills and the Performance of the

Students” by Mushtaq and Nawaz Khan (2012), jobsheet performance serves as a

standard in order to determine the result of student’s achievement. There are some

factors of which affect the student performance learning facilities, communication,

proper guidance and family stress. But there are some variables which affects the

performance of the students. Technical skills can be acquired through technology

education. Technology education are those education or learning activities dealing

with the development of technical skills, knowledge and attitudes relative to

production of service occupation for effective citizen ships or preparing people for
15

employment in technical occupations or upgrading persons who are actually

employed or engaged in technical occupations. Socio-economic factors like

attendance in the class, family income, and mother’s and father’s education,

teacher-student ratio, presence of trained teacher in school, sex of student and distance

of school are also affected the performance of the students. The students’ performance

(academic achievement) plays an important role in producing the best quality

graduates who will become great leader and manpower for the country thus

responsible for the country’s economic and social development (Ali et.al, 2009).

Student academic performance measurement has received considerable attention in

previous research, it is challenging aspects of academic literature, and science student

performance are affected due to social, psychological, economic, environmental and

personal factors. These factors strongly influence on the student performance, but

these factors vary from person to person and country to country.

Many researchers has been discussed the different factors that affects the student

academic performance in their research. There are two types of factors that affect the

students’ academic performance. These are internal and external classroom factors

and these factors strongly affect the students’ performance. Internal classroom factors

includes students competence in English, class schedules, class size, English text

books, class test results, learning facilities, homework, environment of the class,

complexity of the course material, teachers role in the class, technology used in the

class and exams systems. External classroom factors include extracurricular activities,

family problems, work and financial, social and other problems. Research studies

shows that students’ performance depends on many factors such as learning facilities,

gender and age differences, etc. that can affect student performance (Hansen, Joe B.,

2000). Harb and El-Shaarawi (2006) found that the most important factor with
16

positive effect on students' performance is student's competence in English. If the

students have strong communication skills and have strong grip on English, it

increases the performance of the students.

Based on the study entitled “Poor School Performance” by Karande and

Kulkarni (2005), Education is one of the most important aspects of human resource

development. Poor school performance not only results in the child having a low

self-esteem, but also causes significant stress to the parents. There are many reasons

for children to under perform at school, such as, medical problems, below average

intelligence, specific learning disability, attention deficit hyperactivity disorder,

emotional problems, poor socio-cultural home environment, psychiatric disorders and

even environmental causes. The information provided by the parents, classroom

teacher and school counselor about the child's academic difficulties guides the

pediatrician to form an initial diagnosis. However, a multidisciplinary evaluation by

an ophthalmologist, otolaryngologist, counselor, clinical psychologist, special

educator, and child psychiatrist is usually necessary before making the final diagnosis.

It is important to find the reason(s) for a child's poor school performance and come up

with a treatment plan early so that the child can perform up to full potential.

Education is one of the most important aspects of human resource development.

Every child should have the opportunity to achieve his or her academic potential. It is

generally noticed that at least 20% of children in a classroom get poor marks - they

are “scholastically backward”. Poor school performance should be seen as a

“symptom” reflecting a larger underlying problem in children. This symptom not only

results in the child having a low self-esteem, but also can cause significant stress to

the parents. It is essential that this symptom be scientifically analyzed to discover its

underlying cause(s) and find a remedy.

17

There are many reasons behind the poor academic performance in children at

school, such as, medical problems, below average intelligence, specific learning

disability, attention deficit hyperactivity disorder, emotional problems, a poor

socio-cultural home environment, psychiatric disorders, or even environmental

causes.

It has been recognized that children from poor socio-economic status families

have higher chances of poor school performance. Malnutrition due to poverty coupled

with low education and status of parents adversely affect their cognitive development.

Such children also have higher chances of experiencing, right from their pre-school

years, parental attitudes which do not motivate them to study and an unsatisfactory

home environment which does not encourage learning (witnessing domestic violence,

family stressors, adverse life events). Another feature we regularly observe in our

clinic is that many of these disadvantaged children are studying in English medium

schools as their parents believe that this would help them progress in life. These

children face the added burden of “language barrier”, namely, they are not conversant

in English as they came from non-English speaking families, which leads to poor

school performance or even school failure.

It is well known that intelligence (measured as the intelligence quotient or IQ) is

one of the important prognostic variables in the academic outcome of children.

Children with borderline intelligence or “slow learners” (IQ 71 to 84), or mental

retardation (IQ≤70), irrespective of the etiology (past history of prematurity, neonatal

TORCH infections, meningitis, encephalitis, head injury; Down syndrome, Fragile X

syndrome, Turner syndrome, Klinefelter syndrome, etc.) present with poor school

performance or school failure. Children born and brought up in iodine-deficient

environment have significant impairment in language, memory, conceptual thinking,

18

numerical reasoning and motor skills. Children with below average intelligence

usually have history of developmental delay.

Conditions which cause emotional problems in children viz. chronic neglect,

sexual abuse, parents getting divorced or losing a sibling might cause long term

distress resulting in academic underachievement. Children can face severe emotional

upheavals during the treatment of chronic health impairments such as asthma, cancer,

cerebral palsy, congenital heart disease, diabetes mellitus, epilepsy, hemophilia,

rheumatic diseases, or thalassemia, resulting in low self-esteem and loss of motivation

to study. Despite average intelligence, absence of significant family dysfunction and

advantaged social background, a large number of children with isolated

growth-hormone deficiency or with idiopathic short stature develop low self-image,

behavioral problems and have academic underachievement. In recent times,

HIV-infected children have also been reported to exhibit clinically significant

emotional problems.

RESEARCH METHODOLOGY

This chapter includes the research methodology of the study. This part show the

Research Design, Instruments and Technique Used, Sampling Procedure and

Statistical Treatment of Data

Research Design

This research focus on “Factors Affecting the Poor Performance of Grade 12

Electrical Installation and Maintenance Students in Performing Board Wiring

Installation in Amaya School of Home Industries s.y. 2019-2020”.

The researchers used Descriptive Research Design to determine the factors

affecting the poor performance in performing board wiring installation among grade

12 electrical students. The researchers used this design because it is suitable to the

study and it could justify or describe the data collected.

Instruments and Techniques Used

The researchers of the study used the following instruments and techniques in

collecting data: researchers use questionnaires to collect data. The questionnaire that

would be used is written questionnaires that will be handle out and distributed to

Grade 12 Electrical Student of Amaya School of Home Industries.

20

Survey Questionnaire

Used to gather data. The questionnaire is divided into two parts: the factors that

affect the poor performance in performing board wiring installation and the effect of

poor performance to the grades.

Distribution and Retrieval

The researchers distributed the questionnaires in the room of the Grade 12

Electrical Students, the researchers asked the subject teacher if they could conduct a

survey. If the subject teacher said ”yes”, then the researchers will read a letter in front

of the students to inform the students that they will conduct a survey. The researcher

distributed the questionnaire in each electrical student. Then the questionnaire will be

collected one by one by the researchers after the respondents answered the

questionnaires.

Sampling Procedure

The researchers used the SIMPLE-RANDOM SAMPLING TECHNIQUE in

order to gather the needed data. A simple random sample is a subset of individuals ( a

sample) chosen from a larger set (a population) Each individual is

chosen randomly and entirely by chance, such that each individual has the

same probability of being chosen at any stage during the sampling process, and each

subset of k individuals has the same probability of being chosen for the sample as any

other subset of k individuals.

CHAPTER V

SUMMARY OF FINDINGS, CONCLUSION AND

RECOMMENDATION

This chapter presents the summary of findings, so conclusions drawn from the

findings and the corresponding recommendations.

Summary of Findings

After collecting information in the respondents the researchers came up to the

summary of findings.

1. What is the demographic profile of the respondents?

1.1 Age

The largest group of respondents was found on the bracket of 17 years old

with a frequency of 21 or a percentage of 41%. The second highest is the group of

18 years old with a frequency of 13 or a percentage 29.55%. The third highest

group is the age of 19 with a frequency of 6 or a percentage of 11.36%. Then the

age of 16 years old has the frequency of 3 or a percentage of 6.82%. Lastly the

age 20 and 22 both got the same number of frequency of 1 or a percentage of

2.27%
33

1.2 Gender

The largest group of respondents was found on the bracket of male with a

frequency of 39 or a percentage 88.64%.While the remaining is the group of

female with a frequency of 5 with a frequency of 5 or a percentage of 11.36%.

2. Factors Affecting the Poor Performance

Wiring abilities is poor had gathered a frequency of 44 or a mean of 3.09.

Cannot interpret electrical diagram into actual wiring had gathered a frequency of

44 or a mean of 3.05. The allotted time is not enough to finish the activity had

gathered a frequency of 44 or a mean of 2.98. Do not know how to perform

planning had gathered a frequency of 44 or a mean of 2.80. Cannot focus because

poor environment and Do not communicate with others when performing the

activity had both gathered a frequency of 44 or a mean of 2.73. No self-

confidence in own work had gathered a frequency of 44 or mean of 2.64. Lack of

idea and Knowledge had gathered a frequency of 44 or mean of 2.61. The

availability of the resources is inadequate had gathered a frequency of 44 or mean

of 2.52. Lack of tool and equipment had gathered a frequency of 44 or a mean of

2.27

3. Effect of Poor Performance to the Grade

Do not have a chance to get an outstanding grade had gathered a frequency of

44 or a mean of 3.27. Passing grade is expected but not high enough had gathered

a frequency of 44 or a mean of 3.02. Did not meet the grade that is expecting had

gathered a frequency of 44 or mean of 3.00. Grade is passed but not consistent had

gathered a frequency of 44 or a mean of 2.91. Unsatisfied to the result of their

grade had gathered a frequency 44 or a mean of 2.86. Getting failed grade is

34

possible had gathered a frequency of 44 or a mean of 2.80. There are chance to get

a high grade and No improvements of their past grades had both gathered a

frequency of 44 or a mean of 2.66. Poor grade is to be expected had gathered a

frequency of 44 or a mean of 2.39. Getting an outstanding grade is possible had

gathered a frequency of 2.32

Conclusion

After interpreting the researcher came up the following conclusion:

1. Finding shows that the highest percentage of Grade 12 Electrical

Installation and Maintenance students is the age of 17 and 18 years old. From the

data gathered most of the respondents are male.

2. The respondents agreed that poor wiring abilities are the main reason why

the electrical students are facing difficulties in performing board wiring

installation. It also loses the willingness of the students to do their activity even if

they want to.

3. The study shows that poor performance in performing board wiring

installation can result in not getting an outstanding grade. Many of the

respondents agreed that it can be a result if poor performance goes on and on in

board wiring installation.

35

Recommendation

The following recommendations are offered based on the findings and conclusion

of the study.

1. The researchers recommend the students to practice electrical wiring and

read more about it to learn techniques and different strategies.

2. The researchers recommend the students to do not give up if they’ve got

failed grades because of poor performance. Instead make it a lesson for them to

work hard and to achieve their dreams.

3. The researchers recommend the students to practice communicating with

others when they needed help. There is nothing wrong with that, it could also

practice your communication skills.

4. The researchers recommend the students to focus more on improving their

wiring skills by watching videos that will help them to improve their skills.

5. The researchers recommend the students to learn from their mistakes.

Practice makes perfect. Do not rush things work hard now and earn them later.
