CHAPTER II METHOD AND PROCEDURES

RESEARCH DESIGN

True experimental design is thought to be the most accurate

type of experiment research because it supports or refutes a

hypothesis using statistical analysis and it can also establish

cause and effect relationships. Furthermore, true experiments

have a control group which is a group of research participants

that resembles the experimental treatment. It has also at least

one control group and one experimental group(Gautam,2017).

According to Psychology, true experimental design is one in

which the researcher manipulates the independent variable to

observe its effect on some behavior or cognitive process (the

dependent variable) while using random assignment of

participants to groups in order to control external factors from

influencing the results. Without both manipulations of the

independent variable and random assignment of participants, the

researchers do not have a true experimental design and as a

result, the cause and effect cannot be established.

MATERIALS

For this study to operate, there were certain materials

that were used. These materials led to the gathering of data

which is substantial in order to classify whether this study is

successful or not. The materials used were 30g of baking soda

with different brands (A, B, C) to be mixed with 50 mL of

sugarcane vinegar, 50 mL, 100mL, and 150mL of commercial vinegar

A to be mixed with the best brand of baking soda, beaker to

measure the amount of commercial vinegar A and the sugarcane

vinegar, electronic digital scale to measure the amount of

baking soda in grams, 12 transparent medium plastic cups used as

a container for mixture, and an aquarium used as a container for

the both the commercial vinegar A and the sugarcane vinegar for

comparison.

PREPARATIONS AND PROCEDURE

This experiment was executed during a period of 10 days

from 28th of September 2018 to 8th of October 2018. Respectively,

brand A, B and C of baking soda was bought at Tiongsan, Savemore

and Puregold. In addition to this, sugarcane vinegar was bought

at the Public Market at Km. 5, La Trinidad, Benuet while

commercial vinegar A was bought at the store, located near one

of the researchers’ residence at Balili, La Trinidad, Benguet.

Determining the component of baking soda and sugarcane

vinegar- Using books and other references- books, internet, and

other researches- the researchers are able to identify the

possible active components that are present in baking soda and

sugarcane vinegar to become a mosquito attractant.

Determining the best amount of sugarcane vinegar- There

were 3 transparent plastic cups that were used. For the first

plastic cup, it was placed with 30g of baking soda with 50mL of

sugarcane vinegar. The second plastic cup was placed with 30g of

baking soda with 100mL of sugarcane vinegar. The last plastic

cup was placed with baking soda with 150mL of sugarcane vinegar.

The solution that attracted the most number of mosquitoes was

the most effective.

Observation of the best amount of sugarcane vinegar- There

were 3 trials for each plastic cup. Each trial of each plastic

cup was observed for an hour before observing the other plastic

cups containing 30g of baking soda and the different amounts of

sugarcane vinegar and commercial vinegar A. After gathering the

number of mosquitoes attracted for the first mixture having 30g

of baking soda with 50mL sugarcane vinegar, the researchers

proceeded in gathering the number or mosquitoes attracted by the

other two concentrations- 30g of baking soda with 100mL of

sugarcane vinegar and 30g of baking soda with 150mL of sugarcane

vinegar. Every after an hour, the mixture was replaced with a

new one similar to its original amount.

Determining the more effective kind of vinegar in terms of

number of mosquitoes attracted- There were 6 plastic cups that

were used. The 3 plastic cups were used as a container for the
sugarcane vinegar and the other 3 were used as a container for

the commercial vinegar A. First, two plastic cups were placed

inside the aquarium. One having 30g of baking soda with 100mL of

commercial A vinegar. The other plastic cup contains 30g of

baking soda with 100mL of sugarcane vinegar. There were 3 trails

for each comparison between the two mixtures having the same

brand of baking soda but different kind of vinegar. Each

comparison was done every after an hour. The mixture that would

have the greater number of mosquitoes attracted, would be the

better mixture.

Integration of the mixture to the specimen- The baking soda

mixed with commercial vinegar A or sugarcane vinegar acted as an

attracting agent for mosquitoes. Determining the efficiency of

the different concentrations in terms of the number of

mosquitoes attracted would mean maximizing the function of

mosquito killers. The more effective an attractant, the more

effective a mosquito killer.
