This report concerns the final results of the palynological analysis carried out on Twenty five(25)
ditch cutting samples from ATADERO -1 well, drilled by NEXEN PETROLEUM
COLOMBIA LIMITED in the Upper Magdalena Basin.
This study focusses on the age determination, palynofacies description and definition of the
depositional environment.
Based on the fair to good recovery of palynomorphs was possible to date with enough confidence
the studied sections drilled by this well.
Twenty five (25) ditch cutting samples from ATADERO -1 well, between 40 feet - 4000 feet, were
processed for palynological analyses. Based on this study was possible to establish ¿Late
Santonian? age for the section between 40 feet to 850 feet. (Upper Villeta F.)
A second section was studied from 1440 feet to 2100feet which corresponds to sediments from
Paleocene age.
The section between 2150 feet to 2340 feet the sedimentary secuence corresponds to Maastrichtian
age.
The interval 2350 feet to 3330 feet is absence in the palynological information due not samples
were submited to palynological analyses.
The sediments between 3330 feet to 3550 feet section corresponds to Not Older Than Late
Campanian age and the lower drilled between 3550 feet to 4000 feet section belong to sediments
from Late Santonian to Early Campanian age.
Littoral to Inner neritic conditions prevailed during the accumulation of the Cretacepus sediments
and Alluvial plain for Paleocene sediments.
This chapter describes the different palynological assemblages found during this study, wich
support the age determinations for the whole sedimentary section drilled by ATADERO -1 well.
The distribution of pollen, spores and dinoflagellate cysts is illustred on the range chart.
Based on the palynological characteristics is possible to subdivide the stratigraphic section drilled
in this well in five (5) major intervals:
Spiniferites ramosus
Hystrichodinium sp.
Oligosphaeridium complex
Oligosphaeridium sp.
Luxadinium propatulum
Cleistosphaeridium sp.
The presence of Foveotriletes margaritae allow to define this age. The main palynological
assemblage found is characterized by the presence of follow dinoflagellate species:
Foveotricolpites perforatus
Cerodinium cf. diebeli
Spinizonocolpites baculatus
Perfotricolpites digitatus
This interval is characterized by absence palynological information due Not samples were submited
to palynological analyses.
Oligosphaeridium complex
Oligosphaeridium cf. alberti
Dinogymnium undulosum
Dinogymnium nelsonense
Dinogymniumcf. Nelsonense
Odontochitina operculata
Xenascus ceratioides and
Coronifera oceanica among others.
This chapter presents the discussion and interpretation of the palynological data including the
organic matter and kerogen type.
Base on this study on this well was possible to divided in five (5) major intervals.
The first section from 40 feet to 850 feet corresponding to Upper Santonian? sediments recorded
scarce content of organic matter, composed by high values of Woody and Marine sapropel material
with scarce content of coaly types.
This interval shows low T.O.C. values domain of kerogen type II and lII (Gas to oil prone ).
Based on the palynological characteristics the depositional environment for these sediments have
been interpreted as Littoral to Inner Neritic.
Between this interval and depth 800 feet- 850 feet there is a reverse fault due the first occurrence of
species from Paleocene age (see, range chart).
Down section the sediments accumulated during the Paleocene 1440 feet - 2100 feet, record a poor
recovery of palynomorphs with domain of pollen and spore grains.
Species of pollen and spores characterize the palynological assemblage. The scarce content of
organic matter exhibits a predominance of continental material. This palynofacies points out a
alluvial plain environment of deposition with a relatively moderate contribution of terrestrial
organic matter and the sediments corresponds to Guaduas Formation .
The main kerogen types corresponds to the types lll ( Gas prone), with a low Total Organic Carbon
(Qualitative TOC) and a Thermal Alteration Index (T.A.I. ), sensu Staplin) of 2 (Inmature).
The palynofacies of sediments accumulated during the Maastrichtian (2150 feet to 2340 feet)
yielded fair palynological assemblages dominated by good recovery of diagnostic Dinoflagellate
cysts and scarce content of pollen and spore grains which corresponds to along stratigraphical
range.
A Littoral to Inner Neritic environment has been interpreted for this sedimentary section.
Lithologic unit is Upper Guadalupe Formation.
This interval presents a low values of T.O.C. and predominace of kerogen of Types llI and ll (gas to
oil prone), with a T.A.I.. 2+ (Early mature).
The interval From 2350 feet to 3330 feet interval have not been studied.
The palynofacies of sediments accumulated during the Not Older Than Campanian age (3330 feet
to 3550 feet) yielded good to fair palynological assemblages dominated by good recovery of
diagnostic Dinoflagellate cysts and scarce content of pollen and spore grains.
The palynofacial characteristcs are the following: domain of dinoflagellate cysts over pollen and
spore grains; Scarce content of organic matter which corresponds to high values of marine sapropel
and low percentages of Terrestrial organic matter.
The environment of deposition has been interpreted as Inner Neritic with a low contribution of
terrestrial organic matter; The Lithologic unit is Guadadule Formation .
The lower most part drilled in this well goes from 3550 feet to 4000 feet.( total depth).
the stratigraphic section of Late Santonian to Early Campanian is characterized by a good to fair
recovery of palynomorphs mainly dinoflagellate cysts and good to moderate content of organic
matter dominated by high values of marine sapropel and scarce content of woody and herbaceous
material.
A Littoral to Inner Neritic environment prevailed during the deposition of these sediments. The
Lithologic unit is Upper Villeta Formation.
The kerogen types lll and ll points out the domain of gas to oil prone in this interval and early
mature conditions of thermal alteration and fair T.O.C. domain along this sedimentary secuence.
Based on this study was possible to establish five (5) major intervals between 40 feet to 4000 feet.
(Upper Villeta Formation ; Guaduas ; Upper Guadalupe, Upper Villeta Formations).
The sedimentary secuence drilled corresponds to sediments from Early Paleocene to Late Santonian
age.
One fault have been reported in this study; is located between 800 feet to 850 feet.
The best oil source rocks correspond to the sediments accumulated during the late Santonian age
( Villeta Formation).
The lower most section drilled corresponds to sediments from Upper Villeta Formation.
