OPINION ESSAY : THE GENERATION GAP IS ONE WHICH

CANNOT BE BRIDGED

Generation gap refers to the fact that there has always been a
mental and behavioural conflict between teenagers and
adults. The conflict is generated by several causes. In my
opinion the generation gap is one which cannot be bridged
considering the different historical periods of time in which
the actants were born as well as their biological data.
Firstly, the most important cause of the generation gap is
related to the biological specific diffrencies between
generations. The biological data influence the specific
psychoollogy which is very different from teenager to adult.
For example, teenagers are very sensitive, very vulnerable due
to their lack of experience, which makes them not trust
anything and anybody. They revolt against the social existing
order considering the adult and old generation as the cause of
all evil, almost a barrier against their lives. On the other hand
the adults and elder people have a lot of life experience and
they value everything cautiously.
Secondly, the generation gap is formed as a result of the
different historical periods of time, when adults and teenagers
were born, educated and when they personally developed. For
example, the present teenagers were born at a time when IT
reached high peacks and they became very early conversant
with PC, internet, mobile phones, tablets and correspondingly
with computer games, facebook, instagram, twitter, not to
speak of an incredible big number of specialized sites. Thus,
they have access to a great number of virtual information and
activities, that make them accumulate more knowledge than
their contemporay adult generation. They think that they are
superior to their parents and grand parents who are used to
traditional book reading, animal caring, gardening and
meeting friend really not virtually.
Some people argue that the gap cannot dissappear, it can be
narrowed, enabling thus a breadge to connect the two sides.
The practical, immediate solutions are communication
between the two groups, understanding, acceptance and
respect for each other. For example, when the summer
holidays come, the parents should discuss with their teenager
son or daughter about the period, location and type of
activities for the respective period of time. They should
understand the wish of the teenager who should, in their turn,
accept suggestions coming from the parents. Together they
should value the best options, reach a common conclusion and
respect it.
In conclusion, the generation gap is an ever existing
problem, caused by different factors such as: psychological,
historical and educational. While this gap cannot be bridged,
it can be kept under control if the two groups- teenager versus
adults- live in harmony, apply to communication in order to
understand and accept each other.
