HTO Lab Assignment

Question 1:

In a process industry, a reinforced-concrete smokestack must be lined with a refractory on the

inside. The inner and outer diameters of the smokestack are 100 and 150 cm, respectively. The
temperature of the inner surface of the refractory lining is 625◦C, and the temperature of the inner
surface of the reinforced concrete should not exceed 325◦C.The thermal conductivity of the
lining material is 0.5 W/(m2K), and that of the reinforced concrete is 1.1 W/(m2K). Determine
the thickness of the refractory lining and temperature of the outer surface of the smoke stack
under the conditions that the heat loss must not exceed 2000 W per meter height.
Question 2:
A lube oil recovery unit wants to cool down 9000 lb/hr of 26 ºAPI lube oil from 300 ºF to 200 ºF
by flowing 21000 lb/hr of a coolant fluid. A double pipe heat exchanger is needed to be installed
with a counter flow arrangement. The coolant will be heated from 68 ºF to 149 ºF. The viscosity
of the coolant is 1.0 cp at 100 ºF and 1.5 cp at 200 ºF. A fouling factor of 0.001 should be
considered for each stream with the pressure drop which is already presumed within the
allowance limit that is 10 psi. A number of 20 ft hairpins of 2- by 1¼ in. IPS are available.
Calculate the area required for the double pipe heat exchanger and how many hairpins are
required? Assume that (µ/µw) 0.14 =1.0 and steady state heat transfer during cooling process.
Question 3:
200000 lb/hr of a 20 % caustic soda solution (at 157.5 ºF specific gravity = 1.53, specific heat =
0.886 Btu/lb-oF and viscosity = 1.2 cp, thermal conductivity = 0.40 BTU/hr ft2 ºF) is to be cooled
using a shell and tube heat exchanger from 195 ºF to 120 ºF using well water from, which is
heated from 77 ºF to 100 ºF. Pressure drops of 10 psi are allowable on both streams and a total
dirt factor of 0.002. Available for this service is a 10.02 in. I.D 1-2 exchanger having 52, ¾ in.
O.D, 16 BWG tubes 16′0′′ long and laid out on 1-in. square pitch. The bundle is arranged for two
passes, and baffles are spaced 2 in. apart. Will the exchanger be suitable?
