Dangerous goods classification VAT: SAP_EHS_1022_023

Definition

The dangerous goods classification assigns an identification number and risk potential to a material
in accordance with a dangerous goods regulation. The risk potential contains information on
dangerous goods letters and the packing group. The material can be assigned to the dangerous
goods classification directly, or via a real substance. The identification number is linked to a listed
substance, for which you maintain the relevant dangerous goods class (depending on the
regulation in question) in specification management and manage the resulting dangerous goods
data records in accordance with the risk potential.

Use

Generally, you define this value assignment type for a specification of the specification category
dangerous goods classification and the specification type dangerous goods classification. The
dangerous goods classification value assignment type is used to enter dangerous goods data
required by law, in accordance with the dangerous goods regulation, identification number, and
risk potential.

Procedure

Enter the required data. Note the following with regard to the individual tab pages:

o Value assignment
Enter the physical state during transportation.

o Transp. cl.

- Specify the specification of the specification type UN listed substance that is to be

referenced, in accordance with the respective dangerous goods regulation.

- Specify the risk potential, which consists of a combination of a dangerous goods letter and
a packing group.

- Enter the processing status.

The selected risk potential must be maintained under the dangerous goods data in the
dangerous goods regulations value assignment type of the UN listed substance that is to be
referenced.

The risk potential of the UN listed substance to be referenced is only valid in conjunction
with the dangerous goods class.

Risk Potential

This is a combination of the classification code and packing group.

Examples

(SW, III) Classification code SW, packing group III

Dependencies

You define the classification code depending on the dangerous goods regulation and dangerous goods class in
the IMG activity Specify Dangerous Goods Class and Classification Code.

You define the risk potential in the IMG activity Specify Risk Potential.

Notes

The classification code appears in table 3.3 (column 3b) in the restructured dangerous goods regulations ADR,
ADNR, RID, and IMDG. It is used to explain the dangerous goods properties of the UN-listed substances listed.

The exact meaning of the classification code is different depending on the dangerous goods class and can, for
example, be found at the following points in the ADR regulation:

• Class 1: Chapter 2.2.1.1.4

If you want to map class 1 dangerous goods in the system, you can use the Classification code field to
specify the Compatibility group. The compatibility group is used in particular for mixed loading
determinations within class 1. In the ADR regulation, 13 compatibility groups are defined. For more
information, see Chapter 2.2.1.1.6.

• Class 2: Chapter 2.2.2.1.2 and 2.2.2.1.3

• Class 3, 4.1, 4.2, 4.3, 5.1, 5.2, 6.1, 6.2, 8, and 9: Chapter 2.2.x.1.2; where x is the class without a
decimal point.

• Dangerous goods of class 7 do not have a classification code

Examples of classification codes:

UN Number Name Cl.Code Explanation

2359 Diallylamine FTC Flammable liquid, toxic, corrosive
1381 Phosphorus, white ST4 Inorganic, toxic, solid
3051 Aluminum alkyls SW Substances liable to spontaneous combustion,
which, in contact with water, emit flammable gases

Hazard Identification Number

Alphanumeric key that identifies the hazard identification number uniquely.

Code for Chemical Hazard

Alphanumeric key to specify firefighting data for chemical accidents.

Use

The Hazchem Code (hazardous chemicals code) uses a combination of numbers and letters to
provide information about the required extinguishing media, the required personal protection
measures, and the possible reactions of the substance

Transport Approved

Specifies whether the dangerous goods are approved for transport when the chosen
dangerous goods regulation is taken into account.

EmS Number 1
