“QURAN VERSES ON GAMBLING(HARAM TRADE)”

AYAT # 1:

Al-Baqara [2:219]

They ask you (O Muhammad SAW) concerning alcoholic drink and gambling. Say: "In
them is a great sin, and (some) benefit, for men, but the sin of them is greater than their
benefit." And they ask you what they ought to spend. Say: "That which is beyond your
needs." Thus Allâh makes clear to you His Laws in order that you may give thought."

EXPLANATION:
In the early days of Islam the Prophet sallallahu alaihe wasallam was questioned
regarding the permissibility of gambling and alcohol. In this verse, the total prohibition
of alcoholic drinks and gambling has been clearly revealed. Allah Ta'ala does not
terminate the subject here, but He carries on mentioning their religious and worldly
harm in the following aayah. Allah, the Almighty states conclusively that shaytaan wants
to ruin our worldly life and the life of the Hereafter. These forbidden things, (alcohol and
gambling), lay the seeds of hatred and hostility between human beings. These evil
outcomes are innumerable. Their habit distracts a man from obligatory duties such as
salaah and the remembrance of Allah.

It is crystal clear that when a person enters into playing this game he submits his fee on
the understanding that he either loses a small amount or wins a fortune; according to the
divine law of Islam this act is classified as 'gambling'.

In some monthly magazines this form of gambling has expanded very widely and the
income runs into millions from which the businesspersons gain overall benefit. Even if
the company tries not to indulge in any form of cheating, and distributes the prize money
justly, a substantial amount of money is left over which is the blood and sweat of the
poor people.

HORSE RACING

The present day horse racing where one stakes a certain amount on a particular horse is
in fact gambling. It is exactly that form where loss and gain is based on something

indistinct, where one person loses his initial amount and the other wins a substantial
amount.

LOTTERY:

Lottery is a form of gambling and as such is haram in Islam. All forms of gambling:
staking money on card games; horse racing; gambling machines etc. are all forbidden in
Islam. Our beloved Prophet Muhammad (SAW) was against any form of gambling. All
the companions of prophet (SAW) against any form of gambling. The four jurists declare
that any form of gambling is strictly prohibited, and whoever gambles in any way is
committing a major sin. There is also a hadith in Bukhari, where the prophet says that
anyone who even asks someone to come gambling should immediately give charity as
compensation for inviting to a bad action.

AYAT # 2:

Al-Maeda [5:90]

O you who believe! Intoxicants (all kinds of alcoholic drinks), gambling, and Al-Ansâb,
and Al¬Azlâm (arrows for seeking luck or decision) are an abomination of Shaitân's
(Satan) handiwork. So avoid (strictly all) that (abomination) in order that you may be
successful.

EXPLANATION:

In the abovementioned verse of Surah al-Maidah, gambling with arrows has been
referred to. The pagan Arabs would slaughter a camel and divide it into various big and
small parts. Each part of the slaughtered camel would be given a name, and that name
would then be inscribed upon an arrow. Thereafter, all these arrows would be gathered
along with some other empty arrows, and picked in the name of all those who were
taking part. The Quran forbade this practice and called it in another verse istiqsam bi al-
Azlam. Gambling (qimar) is from the word qamar, that which increases at times and
decreases at other times. It has been given the name al-Qimar due to the possibility that
each one of the gamblers may lose his wealth to his counterpart, and it is also possible
that one may gain from the wealth of the other.

The Qur'an mentions drinking and gambling together (5:90-91), since their harmful
effects on the individual, family, and society are very similar. What is more like
alcoholism than an addiction to gambling? This is why one usually is not found without
the other. The Qur'an is absolutely right when it teaches us that both drinking and
gambling are inspired by Satan, that they are akin to idolatry and divining by arrows,
and that they are abominable habits that must be shunned.

HADITH ON GAMBLING IN SUNAN- ABIU– DAWOOD:

Narrated Umar ibn al-Khattab: When the prohibition of wine (was yet to be) declared,
Umar said: O Allah, give us a satisfactory explanation about wine. So the following verse
of Surat al-Baqarah revealed; "They ask thee concerning wine and gambling. Say: In
them is great sin...." Umar was then called and it was recited to him. He said: O Allah,
give us a satisfactory explanation about wine. Then the following verse of Surat an-Nisa'
was revealed: "O ye who believe! approach not prayers with a mind befogged...."
Thereafter the herald of the Apostle of Allah (peace_be_upon_him) would call when the
(congregational) prayer was performed: Beware, one who is drunk should not come to
prayer. Umar was again called and it was recited to him). He said: O Allah, give us a
satisfactory explanation about wine. This verse was revealed: "Will ye not then abstain?"
Umar said: We abstained.  (Book #26, Hadith #3662)

EXPLANATION:

Gambling, the Companion of Drinking. While permitting a variety of games and sports,
Islam prohibits any game that involves betting (e.g., has an element of gambling).
Muslims cannot seek relaxation and recreation in, or acquire money by, gambling.
Therefore, history itself is a witness that after the revelation of the aayah, the
Companions refrained from associating with anything that was even minutely related to
gambling. In an authentic hadith of Bukhari the Prophet sallallahu alaihe wasallam is
reported to have said, "If one person says to another, 'Come lets gamble.' (regardless of
whether he acts upon it or not) then he shall be liable of committing a sin; and the
compensation for that sin will be to give Sadaqah."

CONCLUSION:
Gambling is addictive and many people stake their hard-earned wages in forms of
gambling and lose their wealth and even homes, while their families go hungry. This
leads to many social ills, including the breakup of families, and Islam is about building
families and providing for them, not neglecting them and destroying them. In all forms
of gambling, including the National Lottery, only a very small proportion of people wins.
The majority is losers. Intense jealousy begins as losers look enviously at the winners.
This causes hatred among people, and Islam is about creating love and brotherhood not,
not hatred.

Gamblers spend much time and effort in dreaming “what I would do if I won a million",
longing and wishing that time and effort could be better spent in looking after their
families and remembering Allah. Islam wants you to rely on ALLAH and earn your
income with your feet firmly planted on the ground, and not rely on dreams and the
National LOTTERY! This is a form of minor SHIRK (relying on other than ALLAH)
.Allah is our creator and He knows the best, and in his wisdom He has made all forms of
gambling forbidden for us and as Muslims we place our trust in Him.
