TO BE OR NOT TO BE BEAUTIFUL: DOES COLOR MATTER?

A 20-year-old female 4th year student from Civil Engineering said that beauty is in the eye of the
beholder, she added that to be beautiful is to be yourself. In the question “What is to be beautiful in relation
to complexion or skin color?” she answered that being beautiful is not based on skin color and that anyone
can be beautiful. In relation to the common problems in regards to skin color and beauty concerns of the
students, according to her “The problem is that some of the students aren’t satisfied with their skin
complexion” she also said that the treatments mostly adopted to address skin color or complexion
problems is by using soaps and consulting a dermatologist. The reason for using or investing for
complexion or skin color treatment is to feel and have satisfaction in yourself, she said. Expressing her
take on the problems experienced in relation to complexion or skin treatment, for “Self” is not having
satisfaction, for “Social” she said “bullying”, “Financial” is not enough money and “Health” health
concerns. In the question “Why skin color matters to you?” she answered “Our color is our identity.”

A 19-year-old female 4th year Architecture student said that beauty is defined as being physically
attractive but for me beauty is what’s on the outside and what’s within a person, also she explained “For
me, being beautiful is having confidence, being yourself, and a good heart.” In the question “What is to
be beautiful in relation to complexion or skin color?” she answered “dahil sa culture natin, fair skin
automatically means you’re beautiful pero di naman yan makikita sa balat. Meron namang mga taong
magaganda na di lang ang skin complexion pinagbasehan.” With the question “What are the common
complexion or skin color and beauty concerns/problems of the students?” she answered “Siguro yung
pagiging darker ang complexion narin ang mostly na problem ng students. Guilty ako dun. haha. isama
narin siguro yung acne, uneven skin, etc.” “What are the body and beauty treatment/s adopted/used to
address complexion or skin color concerns/problems?” she answered “Gluta treatment kasama na dun
lotions, soaps etc. Yung iba baka nagpapaderma pa haha. pero ako di man ako gumagamit pampaputi
haha.” Reasons for using/investing for complexion or skin color treatment, “sabi ko nga di man ako
gumagamit pero siguro narin para maging confident kahit papano and gumanda tingin nila sa sarili nila
ganun.” she responded. Her reply in relation to the problems experienced in relation to complexion or skin
treatment is for Self is low self-esteem, for Social is being bullied, for Financial she said “madali maubos
pera kakainvest sa products”, and for Health she had none. With the question “Why skin color matters to
you?” she responded para sakin, dahil nga sa kultura, nagamatter din ang skin kasi iyun na nasa isip natin
parang basehan na talaga natin ang skin color sa beauty pero kung titignan wala naman talaga kasi yan sa
skin color nasa tao yan kung maganda ugali mo, kung may itsura ka, kung maganda ang outlook mo sa
life then yun beautiful ka.”

A 19-year-old male 4th year student from the course Education explained that beauty simply means
possessing not just a beautiful face but also a good heart mind and attitude, and to be beautiful for him is
accepting your flaws as a person and keeping in mind that these flaws and imperfections made you a
unique individual compared to others. With the question “What is to be beautiful in relation to complexion
or skin color?” he answered “For me since we are Filipinos we need to accept our own complexion. We
are known to be ‘kayumanggi’ and we should be proud of it. Remember that we are a powerhouse when
it comes to beauty pageants and almost all Filipinas who compete internationally are confident with their
own skin. That is why having ‘kayumanggi’ complexion is Beautiful.” In the question “What are the body
and beauty treatment/s adopted/used to address complexion or skin color concerns/problems?” he said
“Soaps, lotions, yung may pera pa derma and facial.” According to him the common problems in regards
to skin color or complexion is having dark skin and having pimples, he also said that the reason for
investing for complexion or skin color treatment is for social acceptance, people nowadays are fond of
judging an individual simply by their looks that is why people who have low self-esteem tend to invest
more on beauty products to enhance their beauty. There’s nothing wrong with it as long as you feel good
about yourself and the money that spend is something that you’ve earned from hard work and
perseverance. His response in relation to the problems experienced in relation to complexion or skin
treatment is for Self is lacking of confidence, for Social is being teased for having pimples, for Financial
is spending an amount of money for beauty products, and for Health he had none. In the question “Why
skin color matters to you?” he said “As Filipinos we should be proud of our color it is our pride and honor
because it makes us different from other races, it shows our identity.”

An 18-year-old male 1st year Architecture student said that Beauty is the quality or aggregate of
qualities in a person or thing, he added that to be beautiful is to be proud of what color you have. In the
question “What is to be beautiful in relation to complexion or skin color?” he said that it depends upon
the situation. In the question “What are the common complexion or skin color and beauty
concerns/problems of the students?” he said “Dark skin and pimples.” he also said that the treatments
mostly used to address skin color or complexion problems is by using soaps and lotions. The reason for
using or investing for complexion or skin color treatment is to gain self-confidence and to improve myself.
His response on the problems experienced in relation to complexion or skin treatment, for “Self” is lack
of confidence, for “Social” being teased for his color, “Financial” used money for beauty products and
“Health” had skin allergies. In the question “Why skin color matters to you?” he said “Because it defines
us as Filipino.”

A 19-year-old male 4th year Accountancy student said that Beauty is an idea that something is
pleasurable to the senses and that to be beautiful is to be able to achieve perfection, at least. For him beauty
in relation to complexion or skin color is to be comfortable with your skin color no matter what. In the
question “What are the common complexion or skin color and beauty concerns/problems of the students?”
he answered “Dark skin, pimples, marks and scars.” He said the body and beauty treatment/s adopted/used
to address complexion or skin color concerns/problems are using of Lotions, creams, soaps, and the
reasons for using/investing for complexion or skin color treatment is for better and healthier skin. His
response in regards to the problems experienced in relation to complexion or skin treatment; for Self is
lack of self-esteem, for Social is being bullied, for Financial is expensive treatments and products, and for
Health he had none. He said that skin color matters because it is the first thing people notice on us.
