ESTIMATION OF CARBON FOOTPRINT OF GENERIC SHIPYARD
DY. COMDT MANDEEP SINGH
GUIDE- LT. CDR VENKATA ADITYA

ABSTRACT • APPROACH & METHODOLOGY

Shipbuilding and associated activities are highly important for world Carbon footprints can be calculated by two different directions:
economy with ship transportation for 90% of internationally traded Bottom-up, based on Process Analysis (PA) or top-down, based on
cargo (by volume). The environmental impact of shipbuilding is by no Environmental Input Output (EIO) analysis. But we combine the both
means small as this leads to significant emission of greenhouse gases. methods by using a hybrid approach i.e Hybrid-EIO-LCA Method.

In addition, shipbuilding uses some materials which not only have The following flow chart gives us a brief idea about our approach for
serious implications for environmental harm during their production accounting the emissions:
and usage in the ship construction process, but also subsequently
during ship repairing, operation and recycling activities.

To get a cleaner picture of the situation and to provide a basis for more
detailed and specific analysis, this project aims to identify and estimate
the carbon footprint of shipyard.

BACKGROUND
The Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change in its fourth
assessment report has strongly recommended to limit the increase in
global temperature below 2°C. There are several factors which leads to
emission of Green house gases during shipbuilding.

➢Handling of raw materials; fabrication and surface treatment of basic

steel parts.
➢Joining and assembly of fabricated parts into blocks.
➢Erection of ship structures through the fitting and welding of blocks.
➢Outfitting of ships with electronic equipment.
➢Preparation and installation of various fabricated parts that are not of
the structural nature.

The activities in shipbuilding include highest environmental concern

include metal working activities, including thermal cutting, welding and Result
grinding, surface treatment operations including abrasive blasting, Below is the example of the Calculation of Carbon footprint of a
coating and painting. Shipyard.
