Do you think fungi are living things?

1. Sense surrounding
2. Release energy(respiration)
3. Release tiny spores(reproduction)
4. Spore grow(growth)
5. Excrete waste(Excretion)
6. Nutrition
a. Can’t make own food
b. Can’t eat animals
c. Absorb nutrients from their surrounding
7. Move toward wood

Identify life

• Dry seeds may not show any signs of life

• But, can stay dry for thousands years and when absorb water comes to life
• Use nutrient for (respiration)
• Grow shoot and root( growth)
• Shoot extend toward sun( movement)
• Make nutrients (nutrition)

3.1 The characteristics of living things

(Section review answers)

1 .M – movement; R – respiration (reproduction) S – sensitivity; G – growth; R –

reproduction (respiration); E – excretion; N – nutrition.

2. Plants make their own nutrients from water and carbon dioxide using light energy.
Animals get their nutrients by eating plants and other animals.

3 Animals need to move around so that they can find enough food to eat. Plants make
their own food and so they do not need to move around.

4 The seeds use nutrients stored inside them to respire. Respiration produces carbon
dioxide and releases energy.

3.2 Microbes

Microscopic life
• Invented in 1600s
• To see tiny organisms
• Microscopic org =microorganisms=microbes
• Light microscope
• magnify things (1000 larger)
• Specimen should be thin to let light pass through it
• Electron microscopes
• Complicated (larger than 100000 times)
• Image is black and white
• 2 types:
1. SEM( Scanning Electron Microscope) Show surface of specimens
2. TEM(Transition Electron Microscope) look through thin slice

• Are invisible to the naked eye, you need a powerful microscope

to see them.
• Are everywhere around us, inside us, on us, in our food, in our
homes, in the air we breathe and the water we wash in.
• Are mostly useful, but some are harmful

3.2 microbes
(section review answers)

1 Bacteria, fungi, protozoa, algae.

2. Algae are most like plants because they produce their own food.

3. Many protozoa resemble tiny animals because they eat other micro-organisms.

4 .Bacteria are best seen using an electron microscope. They are very small but electron
microscopes allow us to magnify things up to 1 million times.

5. Viruses are not living things because they do not carry out the seven characteristics of
living things. They can only reproduce inside other living things
