Aim

Vocabulary
Describing an adventure

(Be careful to cut along the dotted lines as indicated.)

Time
15–20 minutes (and another 10–15 minutes for the extension activity)

Unit 9, page 116

Procedure
• Photocopy and cut up Holiday cards.

• Put students in groups of three to five. Give each student in a group a different card. Ask them not to tell
their partners what holiday they have received.

• Refer students to the vocabulary in section A of the Wordlist on page 212 of the Coursebook.

• Brainstorm further adjectives and expressions to describe places and activities on holidays. If you do
this as a class, you can build up a list of useful lexis on the board for reference. Alternatively, you can get
students to brainstorm vocabulary in their groups.

• Students imagine they have just come back from the holiday on the card they were given, then use the
vocabulary from the Coursebook to tell their partners about their holiday – without telling them what
their destination was. They should include descriptions of their activities, the places they visited or spent
time in, who they went there with, how they felt and any other details that they can think of. Encourage
them to be imaginative and fill the story with personal details.

• Each student should talk about it for approximately one minute, and answer their partners’ questions.
Then the group should try and guess what the destination was, or what similar destinations they know.

• To wrap up, elicit some of the more entertaining or funny stories that students heard in their groups,
and invite comments from the rest of the class. Ask them if they would like to go on a holiday like the
one described and give reasons.

Alternative procedure
After the brainstorm, instead of describing their holidays orally, students should write a
personal letter or email to their friends in the group, then swap letters and either talk about
them in groups, or write replies.

Extension activity
To practise multiple matching, copy and cut up the People cards. Mix them up and hand
out all nine to each group of three to five students, and also hand out copies of all the
Holiday cards. They should discuss and decide which holiday suits which people, and
explain why. Elicit ideas with the whole class, and invite comments.
