A Correlational Study between Study Management and

Academic Performance of Grade 12 Students

at Kasiglahan Village Senior High School

Background of the Study

In this current days, studying is really important to learners. They must pass
through educational activities and gained knowledge from learning in order to achieve
goals in life. However, it depends in the skills of an individual learner that can develop in
a long time to become a professional. Every school year, different tasks has been given
to learners to enhance their skills and knowledge, and adopt more information about the
topics that teach by a teacher or a professional. Common tasks such as school activities,
projects, dissertations and others that helps learners to extract more information and
exercise their knowledge in order to be well prepared in the future. Unfortunately, it needs
a suitable and long time to accomplished and completely passed at the very end.
Stated by Gupta (2019), studying helps us know a lot of information and facts about
ourselves and the world in which we are living. Studying helps us retain knowledge that
is needed to acquire the capacity for us to live. However, at present situations, studying
will help you outstand and lead others to the goal of improvement. If a learner, study and
work harder it will help a student achieve the qualifications in academic field. Time is very
important to especially to the learners because the main challenge to survive is utilizing
your activities or managing your time wisely. The researchers will find out how important
every minute when studying and how every minute affects one’s academic performance.
To sustain or attain grades one must pursue through studying is not only bounded it
schools, up till we reach our homes studying could also be in another form such as
assignments or homework.
Days has drastically changing at its state. In accordance, more school tasks are
always given to learners. Superiors such as teachers and professors moderately give
learners tasks in such a short period of time. Concealed in knowledge by some teachers,
learners also have an important time for themselves. As a result, lesser time will be
remained for their personal things. However, learners with such courage in study pursue
this kind of tasks no matter what it takes. To sustain or attain grades one must pursue
through studying is not only bounded it schools, up till we reach our homes studying
could also be in another form such as assignments or homework. Considering that,
managing the time of study may affects the academic performance of a learner. The
learner should know how to manage their time in studying to avoid affecting their
academic performance.
Conducted by Rusiman (2018), study management is very important and it may
actually affect individuals overall performance and achievements. Learners nowadays,
always complain that they do not have enough time to complete all the tasks assigned to
them. The aim of thus study is to know if there is a significance between Study
Management and academic performance of a learner efficiently. To identify it, the
researchers used a structured questionnaire also known as SMART (study management
and academic results test) scale to identify the significance between variables.

Statement of the Problem

This study aims to know the relationship of time management and the academic
performance of Grade 12 students.
Specifically, it seeks answers to the following questions:
1. What are the factors that affect learners ease in studying?
2. What is the average of the selected Grade 12 students?
3. Is there significant relationship between the study management and the academic
performance of Grade 12 students at Kasiglahan Village Senior High School?

FEEDBACK

The conceptual framework presents the Input, Process, and Output or IPO. Input
shows who will be the respondents and population, what are the factors that affect
learners ease in studying. In process is shows the researchers plan for gathering data.
Review of Related Literature and Studies

Study management is the set of daily tasks with a driven purpose, to improve
academic skills and performance, and at the same time, thinking critically. As stated by
Ebele and Olufu (2017), a learner cannot achieve success without the help of studying
management through the whole semester. Studying management skill, and attitudes
helped to foresee the academic performance and achievement more than non cognitive
tests and examples which mislead or delay the prediction of the learner’s academic
performance and effectively of study management they practices.
Academic Performance is also known as the learner’s performance in school in
order to attain high grades and survive the entire school year. Academic performance
determines a learner’s possible grades and achievement. As conducted by Kinkade
(2019), it is a measurement of how you do in school. The grades you receive are one
measurement. The grades that you get is reflecting in your academic performance in
school.
Nonis and Hudson (2010), investigated the influence of the study management.
Based on sample of learner’s results, showed that study management had positive and
negative direct relationship. Their results also showed that study management moderated
the relationship between study time and learner’s performance positively and negatively.
However, study management often have a positive effects because it may helps a learner
to be responsible and make time for studying.
METHODOLOGY
Research Design

This study is a quantitative research utilizing a correlational method. This method

is appropriate to determine the relationship among the use of variable of interest.
Correlational design is to study whether an increase or decrease in one variable
corresponds to an increase or decrease in the other variable (Siddhart, 2011).

Sample

The respondents for the study are the grade 12 students with the total number of
637. The researchers use Slovin’s formula for computing the sample size with the five
percent margin of error. The researchers aim for a total of 246 respondents. Researchers
use a random sampling technique also known as probability sampling. According to
Hayes (2019), this type of sampling sample is as subject of a statistical population in
which each member of the subset has an equal probability of being chosen. A simple
random sample is meant to be an unbiased representation. This study used cluster
random sampling, where the researchers divide the respondents into separate groups.

Sources of Data

The study used in gathering data is the SMART Study Questionnaire (Study
Measurement and Academic Results Test) scale was written and administered by
Topman et. al. The SMART questionnaire has 29 statements and the scale scoring has
five factors associated with study success: Academic Competence, Test Competence,
Time Management, Strategic Studying and Study Hours per Week. The remaining items
measure other interpretation. Each statement has an answer which can be applied to the
learner in general: 1 (Never), 2 (Seldom) 3 (Often), 4 (Always). This questionnaire is a 4
point Likert Scale.
Data Collection Procedure

The data we’re collected through the researchers adopted questionnaire that
connected to our statement of the problem. Before conducting our survey, the
researchers asked permission first with the use of request letter to the school principal for
the survey to be considered in different strands and track. After that, the researchers also
made a request letter to the class advisers to conduct a study to their respective classes.
Then, the researchers float the questionnaires and suddenly retrieve the entire
questionnaires given to the respondents. Lastly, the researchers used statistical tools and
interpret the retrieved data to come up with the findings and conclude about the study.
And give some recommendations for the future researchers, and students.

Plan for Data Analysis

This study used the Pearson correlation coefficient, also called Pearson’s R. The
Pearson’s R correlation is used as a means to gain an overview about the relationship of
two variables. Which Pearson’s R is being used within this research by the researchers
to identify if the significance between study management and academic performance. It
is a statistical calculation of the strength of two variables’ relationships (Barquilla, et.al,
2019). In other words, it’s a measurement of how dependent two variables are on one
another. Using Pearson’s R identifies which variable is stronger or the one that affects
the others and through this, the researchers found out the significant relationship between
study management and academic performance
