Differential Equation Tut 4

1. A culture initially has p0 number of bacteria. At t=1 h the number of bacteria is measured
3
to be 2p0. If the rate of the growth is proportional to the number of bacteria p(t) present
at time t. determine the time necessary for the number of bacteria to triple.

2. When a cake is removed from an oven, its temperature is measured at 300 0F. Three
minutes later its temperature is 2000F. How long will it take for the cake to cool off to a
room temperature of 700F?

3. A body of mass 8kg is dropped from a height of ft with no initial velocity. The body
encounters an air resistance proportional to its velocity. If the limiting velocity is known
to be 4ft/sec, find (a) an expression for the velocity of the body at any time t and (b) an
expression for the position of the body at any time t.

4. A RL circuit has a resistance of 50 ohms, an inductance of henries, an applied emf of 30

volts, and zero initial current of amperes. Find the current in the circuit at any time t.

5. Find the orthogonal trajectories of the family of the curves 𝑦 = 𝐶𝑒 −2𝑥 .
