it’s also a great time for me to
really be able to talk to voters in
a more intimate way, one-on-one
at their door. Of course, you’re
talking to voters all the time,
whether you’re running an active
race or not, but I think this gets
people in the mode of wanting to
talk about politics and policy”.

about his run for delegate.
Hite, who has been an
amateur musician for years,
performed solo pieces on his
guitar, one of which was an

introduced himself, and talked.

and economics.
“I want to make sure we
do get funding down here in
Southwest Virginia. I think all-
too-often our tax dollars do go to
[Northern Virginia] or Virginia
Beach or Richmond,” Hite said.

“It really does make a
difference,” he said. “Some of the
polling, political science stuff,
believes that door-knocking
sometimes even more, so it is
very important.”
Haleigh Williams, president
of the Young Americans for
Freedom (YAF), a non-partisan
conservative group at Radford
University, told The Tartan she
enjoyed seeing a different side
of a politician than usually gets
shown.
“It was also fun to meet other

sentenced to 20 years in prison
on Oct. 7 after pleading guilty
to the second-degree murder of
Alexa Cannon.
Judge Joey Showalter
sentenced Cutting to 40 years in
penitentiary but suspended 20
of those years. Cutting will have
to report to a probation officer
for 10 years after being released.
Chris Rehak, Radford City
Commonwealth’s Attorney,
represented Cannon in the trial.
In an email sent after Cutting’s
plea deal, Rehak said, “the
agreement secured a murder
conviction, avoided any appeals
and spared Alexa’s family and
friends the anguish and anxiety
of trial.”
Making a statement in court,
Cutting said, “there are no words
for this tragedy and my heart is
filled with sorrow and grief. My
heart goes out to the Cannon

Rehak says the 20-year

end of second-degree murder

will be 41-years-old when she

Mexican Grill, with
its great atmosphere and
excellent food, stands out as a
terrific Mexican restaurant in
the Radford area.  ice cream.

right off of Lee Highway. It’s
on the right side of the road

he iconic arch-nemesis
of Batman is portrayed
in an insanely creepy
way in the new film, Joker.
Played by Joaquin Phoenix,
the Joker, or known in this
film as Arthur Fleck, never
did receive much backstory in
other Batman films since the
focus was, well ... on Batman.
This movie does just the
opposite and focuses solely on
the Joker.
The movie takes place in
Gotham City in the 1980s and
shows how the Joker came to
be. It explains his background,
how he grew up, and how
he eventually becomes the
supervillain we all know.
Fleck is a clown during
the day and dreams of being
a stand-up comic at night.
During the turning point of
the movie, Fleck makes one
bad decision, which ultimately
leads to more bad decisions.
The movie focuses mainly
on the Joker’s psychological
fresh salsa, and white house
sauce, like any other Mexican
restaurant.
They have all of the
essential Mexican inspired
classics with options like
salads, pork, chicken,
vegetarian, steak, and seafood.
They’ve got appetizers like
nachos and desserts like fried

on. It was good and fresh.

There were a few pretty gross
parts, and several people in
the theatre had to look away.
Definitely pay attention to the
fact that the movie is rated R.
Obviously, the movie deals
with a lot of clowns since that
is what the Joker is. So, if you
have a fear of clowns, do not
see this movie. With the way
that clowns have been viewed
for the past couple of years,
this movie comes at a time that
a lot of viewers may see it as a
lot more frightening than they

and fresh meal. The whole
experience was good, and the
atmosphere was laid back.
The restaurant set up is
enjoyable; it can be a casual
lunch or a fancy date with
a partner. The prices are all
reasonable, and the meal I
ordered was big enough to

My waitress was so nice.
She accommodated me by
going over the menu with her
favorites to help me make
a good choice. All of the
staff were super friendly and
helpful. You don’t always see
a restaurant acting as one -
sharing the same attitude.
They do have handicap
accommodations, such as a
ramp on the left side of the

audiences and includes adult
language; they were not joking.
Compared to other showings
of the play, I could tell from
some research that Radford
definitely wanted to make it
their own and, for the most part,
succeeded.
The story is based in Niagara
Falls, where a distressed wife,
Cass Harris (Rebecca Redifer),
finds shocking secrets of her
husband in his drawer.
To find enlightenment, and
to get some fresh air out on
the sea, she makes a list of all
of the things she has always
wanted to do and takes a trip to
the “honeymoon capital of the
world,” Niagara Falls.
She then sets herself on a
journey to the falls on the “Maid
of the Mist” tour boat, where
she finds an interesting crew
along the way.
She meets and befriends
Rex is a raging alcoholic
throughout the story, who
always seems to give the kids
hope of what is to come, but
leaves them feeling empty
when he never can keep his
impossible promises.
His personality is strangely
appealing and charismatic,
leaving the reader conflicted
because, in some instances, he
comes off as a likable character.
Rose Mary, on the other
hand, is a wannabe artist who
never gets the fame she is
striving for. She puts her dead-
end career before everything in
life, including her family.
She believes that education
is something to be gained
through experience rather
than school and could care
less whether her children are
supported. She expects them to
learn to live on their own.
The family never truly
has a place to call home; thus
comes the title of the book, The
Glass Castle. Amidst all of the
Lois (Kate Grimes), an alcoholic
that is trying to get away from
town in a similar situation.
The captain of the ship who
pilots the Maid of the Mist,
Captain Mike (Adian Chapman),
gets into the way of their
friendship from Cass wanting
to get his attention the whole
time.
The ending was unexpected,
and it surprised the audience.
I feel the actors made the
story a little more light-hearted
than the original. Although the
show was a bit unusual, I don’t
think the cast could have done a
better job in fulling the laughter
of the audience.
I am no expert on acting, but
anyone could tell the students
were really into the characters
they portrayed throughout the
evening and did not take their
performances lightly.
I would recommend Wonder
of the World. I have never seen
anything like it before. The
humor was dark, but at the same
time, very hilarious.
Overall: 7.5/10

To close out the second
half, the Highlanders exercised
incredible defense and heavy
offensive pressure to prevent
Howard from scoring again.

Head Softball Coach Creasy “Excited” About Fall Season

his week, the Tartan
interviewed Radford Head
Softball Coach Hope
Creasy about her team and their
performance in the ongoing fall
season.
The Tartan: Why is there a
fall season?
Creasy: “NCAA Division I
allows for up to 8 games to be
played in the fall. The stats/
records do not affect the spring
season. Fall games are used to
get the new team some game
experience prior to the spring
season. It provides freshmen
with an opportunity to get
acclimated to the new system,
along with the game itself being
at a faster pace.”
TT: How has the team been
performing so far?
Creasy: “I’m excited about
where we’re at right now in the
fall season. We have seen a lot
of good things up and down
the line-up. While we have had
good outings thus far, there are
still plenty of things to continue
working on throughout the
fall. With six freshmen joining
the program this year, we have
had a lot of teaching moments;
they have meshed well with the
talented group of returners that
we have. There has been a lot of
shuffling with our defense just
to see who fits best and where.”
TT: What are your goals for
the season?
Creasy: “The goals for the
upcoming season are still a work
in progress. As we continue to
learn and grow on and off the
field and actually realize what
we have with this group, I don’t
think we can fully layout detailed
goals until our Fall Season wraps
up. With that said, winning
a Big South Championship is
always the main goal. Going
out every day and working with
a championship mindset is
imperative. We’re pushing the
team to be very detail-oriented
in everything that we do while
having a narrow focus on the
task at hand instead of being
result-driven. That is part of
