How to Use Picture Books to Teach Narratives

There are several ways to use picture books to teach narratives, but essentially all of
them follow the same general principles:

 Read one picture book with your student(s).

 Discuss the particular element(s) of writing you want to highlight.
 Reread a few sections that demonstrate the element(s) well.
 Discuss how young writers might use the element(s) in their own writing.
 Do a bit of oral storytelling together using the element(s) so creative juices begin
to flow.
 Begin writing a narrative with a particular focus on the element(s). Remember that
writing a good narrative, including revisions and editing, will take several days.

Pre-Teaching Activity
The first step of teaching, usually it will take time around 5 minutes. In preparation
stage, the teacher will be give the cover of the picture to the students. The cover contain the
character in the narrative text.

This activity can be a simple discussion between teacher and students. Teacher can start
to interact with the students by asking a simple question :
“what did you see in this picture?”
“do you know about the title in the picture?”
“do you know about the story?”
2. While Teaching Activity
Whilst teaching is the main part of teaching process. In whilst teaching, teacher comes to
reading activity. In this activity young learners need to know thet they should pay attention when
the teacher read the narrative story. Under the guidance of teachers, the students adjust the
position of the seat. For this activity, the teacher make a half of circle for seat position in class.
And then, the students pay attention to the teacher at the time of setting up the props. For teaching
material need narrative text, picture series, tape, desks and board. Next,The teacher put the
pictures randomly on the table. The teacher started to read the narrative story about Snow White.
Snow White
1) A long time ago, there was a beautiful princess was name Snow white. She lived in a castle
with her step mother after her parent was died. Her step mother was wicked and hated Snow
White.

After read first event, the teacher point one of student to take one picture in the table which
appropriate with the story was read by the teacher. And then the student attach the picture in
board with the tape. The teacher help the student to do it. If the picture false, the teacher will ask
to another student to answer. If still false, the teacher will help the student to choose the right one.
This activity will be repeatedly until the story end and pictures completed.
Answer event 1 :

2) Her step mother asked the Huntsman to brought Snow White in the forest and killed her. But
Huntsman feel pity and asked Snow White to run away in forest and left her in there.

3) Snow White walked in the forest and found a little house. She decide to rest in there. Turns
out,it is a dwarfs’s house. Because the seven dwarfs feel pity with Snow White, they allow her to
stay there.

4) Because the step mother knew that Snow White still alive, she was angry. She wanted if Snow
White died. So,she disguise as a old woman and pretended gave her an apple. Whereas it is a
poisoned apple.

5) After Snow White ate that apple. She fell unconscious. Snow White asleep forever. The dwarfs
was sad. Only a miracle which made Snow White woke up again.

6) Unexpectedly, there was a prince looked the Snow White was slept. He felt in love with Snow
White. And then, the prince kissed Snow White. And a miracle happens…

7) After that,Snow White woke up again. And then, she also felt in love with prince. Finally they
were married and happily forever. And the stepmother expelled from castle.

After the story end and the picture was completed, the teacher asked the student to
identify the content of the story for example, the characters and the setting in narrative text.
And the last, the teacher point the student one to one to try read the story in picture
series with Indonesia language in front of class. They learn to read with their own language
appropriate the picture series
3. Post Teaching Activity
Post teaching is a closing part of teaching. In this step, teacher must to give feedback for the
student about their story. For example,if the student explain with wrong answer, the teacher can
be corrected the answer of student. And then, the teacher give the opportunity to the student to
make a conclusion about the story. The teacher completes conclusion for the students.
The advantages of using picture series in the teaching learning process are, first, picture series will
make the learning experience easy to understand by the students. Young learners difficulty to
understand the narrative text (story) without seeing the pictures which contain scene in the story.
They cann't to reflect the situation in narrative text. Second, teaching reading narrative text using
picture series can make young learners interested and enjoy in class. Young learners very like
picture and colour. So it make they feel enjoy when reading the narrative text appropriate with
the picture series. And the last, picture is a descriptions that gives you an idea in your mind of
what something is like. It means that using picture will make the children easier to remember and
understand the new vocabulary that they get.
The disadvantages of using Picture series in teaching reading narrative text is pictures are not
always practical for use in the classroom (size a real object may be too large or too small), the
teacher could not bring the realias in the class because the size is too large, too long, or too wide.
So, it is impossible for the teacher to provide them for classroom study.
