NATIONAL GEOGRAPHIC CULTURE PROFILE

Responses to Questions 2 through 8 should be four to six typed sentences each. Question 10 should be ten to
twelve sentences long.

1. Proper Chicago Bibliographic Citation for your article.

2. Describe the culture being profiled in your article. Include a discussion of the people or group being
profiled along with a description of geographic location.

3. How does the author frame the article? What technique does the author use to construct her/his
exploration of the culture?

4. What aspects of Folk Culture are highlighted in the article? What unique cultural ideas and
practices of the people’s culture are explored?

5. What aspects of Popular Culture are explored? What aspects of Globalization are explored? These
two topics may be intertwined in your article.

6. What aspects of Deep Culture are explored? Remember that this includes attitudes, values, beliefs,
and convictions as opposed to material culture (food, dance, music, art, clothing, adornment, etc…).

7. While National Geographic articles often profile world cultures, they often also investigate
science/environmental issues, politics/current world events, and/or history. Choose one of those three
topics and explain how it is highlighted in your article.

8. What is your critique of the article? Were there aspects you felt were done particularly well? Were
there aspects of the article you were critical of? Were there ideas or issues you felt were lacking
from the article?

9. Proper bibliographic citation for two sources from which you have found additional information
about the peoples you learned about from your National Geographic article.

10. What additional interesting ideas did you find out about the culture highlighted in your article from
those new sources? These ideas can be cultural, historical, geographic, political, etc… Has anything in
the place you read about changed since the time the article was written?
