Lessons 14 16 17 17
* The number of questions per Lesson in Stages 1&2 is slightly higher than in Stages 3&4, balanced by
the fact that the questions are generally slightly shorter.
There are two important variables that dictate how long each stage takes to complete:
progress rate (dependent on class ability, attendance frequency etc.);
proportion of lesson time dedicated to Callan for Kids (including activities, revision exercises,
readings and dictations).
Schools have different lesson durations and attendance frequencies. However, it’s reasonable to
assume a progress rate of 2 pages of New Work from the Student’s Book for each 50 minutes of
Callan for Kids lesson time (within this “lesson time”, I’m including time spent on activities, revision
exercises, readings and dictations). From this, it’s easy to calculate how long it takes to complete a
stage.
If, for example, School X has children attending twice a week for 90 minutes each time, we get:
90 minutes = 50 minutes x 1.8
1.8 x 2 = 3.6 pages of progress per attendance
3.6 x 2 = 7.2 pages of progress per week
and so, rounding up to nearest whole week, we get:
Stage 1 72 pages / 7.2 pages per week 10 weeks
Stage 2 92 pages / 7.2 pages per week 13 weeks
Stage 3 106 pages / 7.2 pages per week 15 weeks
Stage 4 103 pages / 7.2 pages per week 15 weeks
Note that some classes will progress more quickly than this, and some perhaps more slowly.
Also bear in mind that the numbers above don’t include time spent on full stage revisions or stage
exams.
If Callan for Kids is being used alongside other material, the stage durations obviously increase. For
example, if School X dedicates 60% of lesson time to Callan for Kids and 40% to other
resources/materials, we get:
Stage 1 72 pages / 7.2 x 0.6 17 weeks
Stage 2 92 pages / 7.2 x 0.6 22 weeks
Stage 3 106 pages / 7.2 x 0.6 25 weeks
Stage 4 103 pages / 7.2 x 0.6 24 weeks
