Review Paper of “Paraisong Salat” documentary by Kara David

The i-Witness documentary entitled “Paraisong Salat” by Ms. Kara David

presents a group of islands nearby Zamboanga that are currently under
explored and underdeveloped despite the fact that several communities
reside on those. This presentation shows that despite the advances in
various human endeavours, there are still areas and communities that need
to be improved at least to provide them with more humane conditions. This
documentary should be spreaded for us to know that there are many
Filipinos that suffering in poverty.

The islands in the documentary gained the nickname “No Man’s Island” for
it has been traditionally occupied by pirates and terrorists. This is the likely
reason for the delay and abandonment of its development. No private
entities, not even the Philippine government, dared to develop it for fear of
resistance from its traditional inhabitants who were also fighting each other
for dominance. This resulted to the islands’ ability to maintain its pristine
beauty, that is comparable with Boracay and Puerto Galera. It is indeed a
paradise, a site that is significantly different from the hustle and bustle of
the city, and where you can set aside a part of yourself and be in connection
with your true self. The beauty of these islands is incomplete without the

communities residing on it. In the documentary, it is apparent that the lives

of its residents are so simple and frugal, way too different from what you
can see in Manila, or even in other tourist destinations that compare to its
beauty. Since development is long underway for the islands, the people
living on it has been living a somehow primitive form of life. Though they are
civilised, the residents of the islands lack a significant number of common
modern day necessities like electricity, access to potable water, motorised
land transportation, and even a livelihood that will earn them a decent
amount for their livelihood. In the vernacular language, life in the featured
islands is “salat” or lacking. It lacks the basic necessities for people to live
and do their daily activities comfortably.

“Paraisong Salat” features the paradise islands lying along the southern part
of the Philippines. Being close to its virgin beauty, it can potentially marvel
tourists. But despite this, living on these islands can be challenging,
especially for people who have been used to the modern way of life.
Miracle in Cell No. 7 Movie - Summary (Reaction Paper)

The “Miracle in Cell No. 7” is a story about a mentally

challenged (with an intelligence of a child) father and his
daughter. Her father gets wrongly accused because of the corrupt
court and ends up getting in jail in cell no. 7 where he becomes
friends with his cellmates.Yong Goo, a mentally ill father who
accused of murder and rape successfully brings in her 7 years old
daughter, Ye Seung, of course with a help by some friendly
criminals in his cell. In this cell number 7, they have a mission to
protect these two Father-Daughter and also to prove Yong Goo
isn't a murder. This movie should be spreaded because it teaches
us about family values and shows us the reality of our justice
system can be corrupted and biased.
The movie represents how badly people with disability were
treated. People with higher positions and high minded are taking
advantage to those people with dysfucntional issues. This movie
absolutely wins my heart. Every single scene successfully makes
my heart flutter. Hats off to every actors in here, especially Ryu
Seung Ryong ! His acting as a mentally ill father is really perfect.
He isn't just bringing the character of a mentally ill father but also
a character of father who loves her daughter so well. I also adore
Kal So Won as Ye Seung child ! How can this cute little girl can
act like that? She is very cute and smart, like her character. I can
really feel the father-daughter bond. The movie is very
heartwarming and teaches us about family values, especially the
relationship of a father and a daughter. It also shows us that in
reality of our justice systems can be corrupt and biased,
especially when you are up against someone who very powerful
and rich you can’t do anything. I think it is because money talks
right now. We can’t change people anymore.

Critique Paper (any kind of art)
“The Weeping Woman”

The Weeping Woman is a painting finished by Pablo Picasso in

France, 1937. This type of artwork can be considered to be
expressionism. There isn’t an actual background scene in the
painting. The background is completed with different lines and
colors. The woman is the focus point of this painting. She is
wearing an accessory on top of her head which demonstrates her
elegance. My first impression of the artwork is that the face of the
woman is not proportionate and is only painted with lines, no
curves. The main colors that are used in this painting are green,
yellow, blue, purple, red and black. The painting is set mainly of
lined and little curves. The mood and visual effect that this
painting portrays can be considered to be suffering, and sadness.
The colors that the author uses can be considered to be quite
different as each color conveys a separate impression. The light
purple that begins at the bottom top of the woman’s eyes can
convey sadness. The other half of the face is mainly covered in
green and yellow; these can be said to interpret other solid
emotions that the painter must have towards this woman as she
was a vital character in Picasso’s life. The painting is created with
mainly lines which can mean that the woman had strong physical
features or that her different emotions were felt look quite down
or depressive. This is because the woman is crying, which goes
back to the main mood which is suffering.
Picasso wanted us to feel her and understand the pain that she
was going through. It was not easy to be a woman during that
time since females where often frowned upon. Picasso
demonstrates the appreciation that he has for her through this
painting as he wants the audience to understand her.The artist’s
value may be to evoke pain, as mentioned previously. This is due
to the colors that Picasso used and the shapes that he draws; not
only these technical elements but also the images that the
painter uses within the actual face of the woman. The painting
relates to the entire female community. This community can
understand the painting and know what Picasso was trying to
portray. Every woman is able understand and comprehend the
message behind this painting as we all feel the same way at one
point in our lives. I believe that this is a strong value in the
painting. The weak value lies in the different colors that the
painter chooses. I found it confusing to interpret other areas of
the face as the colors that were used didn’t seem to match other
locations of the face.

CRITIQUE PAPER OF “PRETTY HURTS” BY BEYONCE

“Pretty Hurts” is a song recorded by American singer Beyonce for her

eponymous fifth studio album 2013. The song was written by Sia, Beyonce
and Ammo. This song was released on June 10,2014 as the fourth single
from the album. This work highlighted or described the damaging effects of
unattainable beauty standard. The music video really portrays discriminaton
about woman who can not reached the given standard of beauty. The song
lyrical deals with the consequences of society”s high standard of beauty.
Beyonce really did a good job in “Pretty Hurts” because its portrayed
discrimination and high standard of beauty and made people aware about
how society nowadays really works or shows. This discrimination must stop
because it shows how society really unfair in terms of beauty and it makes
people having of low self confidence.

In the music video, Beyonce is represented as a woman who is under a

constant pressure with her body image. The music video is a compilation of
scenes that take place before and during the beauty pageant. These includes
scene such as the contestants training and getting ready for the pageant.
The video follows Beyonce through the challenges and struggles she faced
while competing in beauty pageant. The struggles of many contestants with
their body image and eating disorders are highlighted. Today’s society
consider something to be “pretty” if it fulfills a certain degree of aesthetically
agreeable standard. The word “pretty” is no longer an adjective used to
describedobjects, but rather it has become the object that women strive to
become. The beauty pageant symbolizes society and standard of beauty that
are emphasized today.

My first question is how perfection and beauty linked to

happiness or rather unhappiness? Can a woman criticizes
society’s standard rules of beauty when she follows them willingly
herself? The title of the song itself answer the question ‘pretty
hurts” and those two words are repeated many times throughout
the song, however the initial questions leads into another
focusing on how badly does it hurts. While beauty as a concept is
highly regarded by society, obtaining the socially set standard of
beauty, which becomes the norm of society,is a painful process for
people who are pretty and to those who are not. The pretty
people have to continuously hurt their bodies to keep up with
socially idealized standards, while those who don’t posses the
same qualities are judged and are negatively affected by the
judgement. And that’s how beauty affects us. These people could
possibly take it one step further and start skipping meals and
trying more drastics measures in order to avert the negativity
while aiming for a perceived sense of happiness. Think that these
things will create a sense of happiness, attract more friends
leading to an increase in popularity and feeling of being loved.
Unfortunately the repetitive procedures are merely a distraction
from the thingsthat will truly make peoply happy and inner sense
of self acceptance and love. Women put themselves through
physical pain in order to achieve perfection but those things do
not help with the internal pain. Instead, they hurt themselves
both physically and emotionally.
This concept is clearly evident throughout the Beyonce’s
video. It gives a clear visual of the torn feelings a girl as she fight
to be just right Beyonce is screenshot swallowing pills when the
skinner women move away from her. She also includes a shot of
pageant contestants resorting to using the cotton balls and
orange juice diet. These clips open our eyes and help us realized
the harsh reality that somewhereout true. These are many
women of all ages putting themselves through all the pain
because they are not good enough to be accepted in society as
they are.The purpose and context of the video and song is behind
the scenes look into society’s take on beauty and how it does not
bring you happiness and does not move you forward in life. As
the lyrics are very harsh and stole things are they are, the
sequence of shot supports the lyrics very well as they also shows
the harsh truth, disapproving of the women who cave in to the
pressure of being beauty however criticizing society more for
pressuring these women into thinking being pretty is everything
and applying it to their lives. Moreover, through Beyonce starts
off following society’s rules towards the end she starts to ignore
the pressure put on standard rules of beauty even though she
follows them herself as she clearly does not follow them towards
the end of the video.

In overall, being not perfect will lead you to do everything just

to be perfect the way how the others had it. Being imperfect will
lead you to hurt yourself. Being not pretty will lead to
discrimination that is why other women wanted to be perfect. To
avoid discriminstion they are doing everthing just to reached the
given standard of beauty. Discrimination must stop because it
shows how society really unfair in terms of beauty and it makes
people having a low self confident. Discrimination must stop
because it will lead in hurting themselves just to reached the
given standard of beauty.
