SIMULATION OF FERMENTATION

AIM:
REQUIREMENTS:
DESCRIPTION:
PROBLEM STATEMENT:
PROCEDURE:
1. Open the SuperPro Designer software with a new process file, then by clicking ok
we get to start with batch process operating mode.

Fig.1 : Figure shows the new process file of the SuperPro Designer.
Fig.2 : Figure shows the selecting process operating Mode.
2. Then, we get all the options of the Designer where it is opend, for which we need
to select the task option of pure components in which we need to register where it
gives option with general components of nitrogen, oxygen, water as shown in
below figure.

Fig.3 : Pure Components of the source.

3. Then, we need to add other components of the given problem statement like
media, biomass etc and all other components. Here, impurity like components are
added by selecting option of adding new component which is present at top of the
register coloumn.

Fig.4 : Adding of all the components.

4. After adding all the components, now we need to add Fermentor block by going
to the option of Unit Procedure.

Fig.5 : Figure shows the flowsheet of the fermentor.

5. Here, we click on input stream of Water, we need to add Water ingredient to the
composition and then we need to change the flowrate by clicking on ingredient
flow option i.e., 7800 kg/batch. And check whether the temperature and pressure
are 25 C and 1.013 bar. Then, click on ok option.
Fig.6 : Figure gives the input streams of Water.
6. Now, we need to click on Media stream which shows the composition
components to be added. Here, we add Biomass and Media to the composition
source. We need to give the flowrate values for Biomass and Media as given in
the statement. Then, click ok option.

Fig.7 : Figure shows the input streams of Media.

7. Now, we need to click on Air stream which shows the composition components to
be added. Here, we add Air by taking stock mixtures to the composition source.
We need to give the flowrate values for Air as given in the statement. Then, click
ok option.
Fig.8: Figure shows the input streams of Air.
8. Then, when we click on fermentor we get add/remove operations option by
selecting the components as shown below.

Fig.9 : Adding of the components to the fermentor.

9. After adding components to fermentor, we go to operation data of each source of
selecting CHARGE-1 with water component and flowrates of mass and volume
values is given as given in the problem statement.
Fig.10 : Giving inputs for the CHARGE-1 operation.
10. As same as CHARGE-1, here also we need to add the source components to the
CHARGE-2 with charge using media component.

Fig.11 : Giving inputs for the CHARGE-2 operation.

11. Then, inputs were given to the HEAT-1 and FERMENT-1 operation sources.
Then click ok option.
Fig.12 : Giving inputs for the HEAT-1 operation.

Fig.13 : Giving inputs for the FERMENT-1 operation.

12. Then, click on volume option and select the value of 90% of maximum
allowance.
Fig.14 : Figure shows the volume composition of FERMENT-1 component.

13. Then, we go to reactions option of FERMENT-1 operation in which at first we

need to edit stoichiometry of the components by taking of reactants and products
composition. Here, on both sides we need to have balance mass,

Fig.15 : Components mass balance.

14. By clicking ok option, we get reaction data of enthalpy which is to be changed for
reference component at referred temperature.
Fig.16 : Inputs of Reaction source of FERMENT-1 component.
15. Then, going to the reaction compound in the FERMENT-1, we need to change the
components like substrate as media, rate reference etc., then click of ok option.

Fig.17 : Giving inputs of the reaction source.

16. Go to Vent/Emissions option here we edit temperature and give the certain
component emission as shown in below fig.18.Here, vent condenser option should
be in off option.

Fig.18 : Giving Vent/Emissions inputs.

17. Then, go to profiles option, select the parameters as shown below.

Fig.19 : Giving profile options.

18. Then, we go COOL-1 operation option ,select the given conditions of the problem
statement here we select Glycol for cooling agent. And then go to last operation
of the source by giving of output. For this we select Broth for Output component
of the compound.

Fig.20 : Giving inputs for COOL-1 option.

Fig.21 : Figure shows the input compounds of the output source.

19. By selecting on MB data, we click on Vent stream and Broth streams which are
output sources, we get the composition data as shown below.

Fig.22 : Output source of Vent stream.

Fig.23 : Output source of Broth stream.

20. After all the outputs are checked, we need to got o Dynamic data reports in which
it shows the option of saving as excess file source, we need to save and open the
file and then we get the file shown with graph as shown below.
Fig.23 : Figure shows the result with graphical representation.
21. Then, going to procedure data we get the result by number of cycles operated in
batch/semi continuous in operating mode. Hence, at last by going to report
options which shows the material balances of all each and every component of the
sources with the detailed explaination.
Fig.24 : Figure gives the information of operating mode option.
