With his wife

Into the Woods
[BAKER]
Scene 1 More than anything
-Into the Woods Prologue-
[WIFE]
(Downstage, three structures: Far left, the home of More than the moon
Cinderella. She is in the kitchen, cleaning. Center,
[BAKER'S WIFE]
the cottage where Jack lives. He is inside, milking his I wish
pathetic-looking cow, Milky-White. Far right, the
home/workplace of the Baker and his Wife. They are [CINDERELLA]
preparing tomorrow’s bread. Behind these homes, a The King is giving a Festival
drop depicts a large forest which separates them
from the rest of the kingdom. A Narrator steps [BAKER & BAKER'S WIFE]
forward.) More than life

[NARRATOR, spoken] [JACK]

Once upon a time I wish
In a far-off kingdom
There lay a small village [CINDERELLA]
At the edge of the woods I wish to go to the Festival

[CINDERELLA] [BAKER & BAKER'S WIFE]

I wish More than riches

[NARRATOR, spoken] [CINDERELLA]

And in this village And the ball

[CINDERELLA] [JACK]
More than anything I wish my cow would
Give us some milk
[NARRATOR, spoken]
Lived a young maiden [CINDERELLA & BAKER'S WIFE]
More than anything
[CINDERELLA]
More than life [BAKER]
More than jewels I wish we had a child

[NARRATOR, spoken] [JACK]

A carefree young lad Please, pal-

[JACK] [BAKER'S WIFE]

I wish I want a child
More than life
[JACK]
[NARRATOR, spoken] Squeeze, pal
And a childless baker
[CINDERELLA]
[BAKER & BAKER'S WIFE] I wish to go to the Festival
I wish
[JACK]
I wish you'd give us some [STEPMOTHER & STEPSISTERS]
Milk or even cheese Ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha
I wish
[NARRATOR, spoken]
[BAKER & BAKER'S WIFE] All three were beautiful of face, but vile and black of heart
I wish we might have a child The young lad had no father and his mother
I wish
[JACK'S MOTHER]
[STEPMOTHER] I wish
You wish to go to the Festival?
[NARRATOR, spoken]
[NARRATOR, spoken] Well, she was at her wit's end
The poor girl's parents had died
[JACK'S MOTHER]
[STEPMOTHER] I wish my son were not a fool
You, Cinderella, the Festival? I wish my house was not a mess
You wish to go to the Festival? I wish the cow was full of milk
I wish the walls were full of gold
[FLORINDA] I wish a lot of things
What, you, Cinderella, the Festival? (spoken)
The Festival?! What in heaven's name are you doing
With the cow inside the house?
[LUCINDA]
What, you wish to go to the Festival? [JACK, spoken]
I thought if he got nice and warm
[ALL THREE] He might produce some milk
The Festival?
The King's Festival? [JACK'S MOTHER, spoken]
It's a she
[NARRATOR, spoken] How many times do I have to tell you
And now she lived with her stepmother Only she's can give milk?

[STEPMOTHER, spoken] [NARRATOR, spoken]

The Festival? And then there was a hungry little girl
Ha! Who always wore a red cape

[NARRATOR, spoken] [LITTLE RED RIDING HOOD]

Who had two daughters of her own I wish
It's not for me
[FLORINDA] It's for my Granny in the woods
Look at your nails! A loaf of bread, please
To bring my poor old hungry
[LUCINDA] Granny in the woods
Look at your dress! Just a loaf of bread, please

[STEPMOTHER] [STEPMOTHER, spoken]

People would laugh at you Cinderella, if you can pick up these lentils
And finish your chores in time
[CINDERELLA] Then you may go to the ball with us
Nevertheless Come along ladies
I still want to go to the Festival
And dance before the Prince [STEPSISTERS, spoken]
Yes, Mother And no one keeps a cow for a friend!
(spoken)
[LUCINDA, spoken] Sometimes I wonder what's going on in that head of yours
Good luck
[LITTLE RED RIDING HOOD]
[CINDERELLA] Into the woods
Come, little birds It's time to go
Down from the eaves I hate to leave
And the leaves I have to go
Over fields Into the woods
Out of castles and ponds It's time, and so
I must begin my journey
[JACK] Into the woods
Now, squeeze, pal And through the trees
To where I am
[CINDERELLA] Expected ma'am
Ahhhhhhhhhh Into the woods
Quick, little birds To Grandmother's house
Flick through the ashes Into the woods
Pick and peck, but swiftly To Grandmother's house
Sift through the ashes
Into the pot [BAKER'S WIFE, spoken]
Now you're certain of your way?
[JACK'S MOTHER, spoken]
Now listen to me well, son [LITTLE RED RIDING HOOD]
Milky-White must be taken to market The way is clear
The light is good
[JACK, spoken] I have no fear
But, mother, no he's the best cow in the world Nor no one should
The woods are just trees
[JACK'S MOTHER, spoken] The trees are just wood
Was I sort of hate to ask it
She has been dry for weeks now But do you have a basket?
With no food or money
We've got no choice but to sell her [BAKER'S WIFE, spoken]
Look at her Yes, we do

[JACK, spoken] [BAKER, spoken]

But, Milky-White's my best friend I don't suppose you're planning on buying any of these

[JACK'S MOTHER] [BAKER'S WIFE, spoken]

Look at her Oh, shhhh
There are bugs on her dugs Now, don't stray and be late, alright?
There are flies in her eyes
There's a lump on her rump [BAKER, spoken]
Big enough to be a hump You might save some of those sweets for Granny?
Oh my
[JACK, spoken]
But [BAKER'S WIFE, spoken]
Just, leave it
[JACK'S MOTHER]
We've no time to sit and dither [BAKER, spoken]
While she wither's wither with her She's a thief!
[FLORINDA]
[LITTLE RED RIDING HOOD] I know
Into the woods
And down the dell [LUCINDA]
The path is straight She means me
I know it well
Into the woods [FLORINDA]
And who can tell No she didn't
What's waiting on the journey?
Into the woods [CINDERELLA]
To bring some bread Mother said be good
To Granny who Father said be nice
Is sick in bed That was always their advice
Never can tell So be nice, Cinderella
What lies ahead Good, Cinderella
For all that I know Nice good good nice
She's already dead
But into the woods [FLORINDA]
Into the woods Tighter!
Into the woods
To Grandmother's house [CINDERELLA]
And home before dark What's the good of being good
If everyone is blind
[FLORINDA, spoken] Always leaving you behind?
Cinderella! Never mind, Cinderella
Kind Cinderella
[LUCINDA, spoken] Nice good nice kind good nice
Get up here!
[FLORINDA, spoken]
[CINDERELLA] Ow! Not that tight!
Fly, birds God!
Back to the sky
[BAKER, spoken]
[FLORINDA, spoken] Who might that be?
We're waiting!
[BAKER'S WIFE, spoken]
[CINDERELLA] We've sold our last loaf of bread!
Back to the eaves
And the leaves [BAKER, spoken]
And the fields It's the witch from next-door
And the
[BAKER'S WIFE, spoken]
[FLORINDA] We have no bread
Hurry up and do my hair, Cinderella!
Are you really wearing that? [WITCH, spoken]
I don't want your bread
[LUCINDA]
Here, I found a little tear, Cinderella [BAKER, spoken]
Can't you hide it with a hat? Then what is it you wish?

[CINDERELLA] [WITCH, spoken]

You look beautiful It's not what I wish
It's what you wish
Nothing cooking in that belly now is there? And we'll call it square."
And there will never be
Unless you do exactly as I say [BAKER, spoken]
In three days time a blue-moon will appear I had a brother?
Only then can the curse be, undone
[WITCH, spoken]
[BAKER'S WIFE, spoken] No. But, you had a sister
What curse?
[BAKER, spoken]
[WITCH, spoken] Where is she?
The one I placed on this house
[WITCH, spoken]
[BAKER, spoken] She's mine now!
What are you talking about? And you'll never find her
Small price to pay for what
[WITCH, spoken] Else your father stole from me
In the past, when you were no more than a babe It cost me my youth, my beauty
Your father brought his young wife My mother warned me
And you to this cottage She would punish me
They were a lovely couple With the curse of ugliness
But not lovely neighbors If I ever lost any of them
You see
Your mother was with child [BAKER'S WIFE, spoken]
And she developed an unusual appetite Lost what?
She admired my beautiful garden
And she told your father that [WITCH, spoken]
What she wanted more than anything The beans
In the world, was
Greens, greens, nothing but greens: [BAKER & BAKER'S WIFE, spoken]
Parsley, peppers, cabbages and celery Beans?
Asparagus and watercress and
Fiddle ferns and lettuce [WITCH, spoken]
He said, "All right," The special beans
But it wasn't, quite I'd let him go, I didn't know
Cause I caught him in the autumn He'd stolen my beans
In my garden one night! I was watching him crawl
He was robbing me Back over the wall
Raping me Then bang! Crash!
Rooting through my rutabaga A lightning flash!
Raiding my arugula and Well, that's another story
Ripping up the rampion Never mind-
My champion! My favorite! Anyway, at last
I should have laid a spell on him The big day came
Right there And I made my claim
I could have turned him into stone "Oh, don't take away the baby,"
Or a dog... They shrieked and screeched
Or a chair... But I did
But I let him have the rampion- And I hid her
I'd lots to spare Where she'll never be reached
In return, however And your father cried
I said, "Fair is fair: And your mother died
You can let me have the baby When for extra measure-
That your wife will bear I admit it was a pleasure-
I said, "Sorry Than five!
I'm still not mollified."
And I laid a little spell on them- [JACK'S MOTHER]
You, too, son- Into the woods
That your family tree The time is now
Would always be a barren one We have to live
I don't care how
[BAKER, spoken] Into the woods to sell the cow
How could you do that? You must begin the journey!
Straight to the woods
[WITCH, spoken] And don't delay
And when your mother died We have to face
Your father deserted you The marketplace
Your father was no father so why should you be? Into the woods to journey's end
So there's no more fuss
And there's no more scenes [JACK]
And my garden thrives- Into the woods to sell a friend
You should see my nectarines!
But I'm telling you the same [WITCH, spoken]
I tell kings and queens: You wish to have
Don't ever never ever The curse reversed?
Mess around with my greens! I'll need a certain
Especially the beans Potion first
Go to the woods and bring me back
[JACK, spoken] One: the cow as white as milk
Yeah, but why do we have to go to the next village? Two: the cape as red as blood
Three: the hair as yellow as corn
[JACK'S MOTHER, spoken] Four: the slipper as pure as gold
Because, everyone in this village Bring me these
Knows the cow hasn't given a drop of milk in weeks Before the chime
Of midnight
[JACK, spoken] In three day's time
That's cheating! Tis' then the blue moon reappears
Which comes but once each hundred years
[JACK'S MOTHER, spoken] Just bring them and
We're starving, Jack! I guarantee
Don't you understand that? A child as perfect
Now, you're not to accept less than five pounds for her As child can be
Are you listening to me? Go to the wood!

[JACK, spoken] [STEPMOTHER, spoken]

Yes Ladies
Our carriage waits
[JACK'S MOTHER, spoken]
How much are you to ask? [CINDERELLA, spoken]
Now may I go to the Festival?
[JACK, spoken]
No more than five pounds [STEPMOTHER]
The Festival?
[JACK'S MOTHER, spoken] (sung)
Less than five! Darling, those nails!
Darling, those clothes!
[JACK, spoken] Lentils are one thing but
Darling, with those Ugh, You don't remember?
You'd make us the fools of the Festival (sung)
And mortify the Prince! The cow as white as milk
The cape as red as blood
[CINDERELLA, spoken] The hair as yellow as corn
The Festival lasts three nights The slipper as pure as gold
Surely, you could let me be there for one of them
[BAKER]
[STEPMOTHER, spoken] The cow as white as milk
The King is trying to find his son a wife! The cape as red as blood
Not a scullery maid! The hair as yellow as corn
We must be gone! The slipper as pure as gold
Go!
[CINDERELLA]
[CINDERELLA] I still wish to go to the Festival
I wish But how am I ever to get to the Festival?

[BAKER'S WIFE, spoken] [BAKER]

Beans? The cow as white as milk
These must be the witch's beans! The cape as red as blood
We'll take them with us The hair as yellow as corn

[BAKER, spoken] [CINDERELLA]

We? I know!
I'll visit Mother's grave
[BAKER'S WIFE, spoken] The grave at the willow tree
Yes! And tell her I just want to
Go to the King's Festival
[BAKER, spoken]
We? [BAKER]
You're not coming The slipper as pure as gold
It's not safe out there The cow, the cape
The slipper as pure as gold
[BAKER'S WIFE, spoken]
I can help you! [BAKER'S WIFE]
The hair!
[BAKER, spoken]
No! [CINDERELLA & BAKER]
I can do this on my own Into the woods
(sung) It's time to go
The spell is on my house It may be all
Only I can lift the spell In vain, you/I know
The spell is on my house Into the woods-
But even so
[BAKER'S WIFE] I have to take the journey
No, no, the spell is on our house
We must lift the spell together [CINDERELLA, BAKER & BAKER'S WIFE]
The spell is on our house! Into the woods
The path is straight
[BAKER, spoken] You know it well
Now tell me what am I to return with? But who can tell

[BAKER'S WIFE, spoken] [BAKER & BAKER'S WIFE]

Into the woods to lift the spell To see
To sell
[CINDERELLA] To get
Into the woods to visit Mother To bring
To make
[JACK'S MOM] To lift
Into the woods to sell the cow! To go to the Festival!
Into the woods!
[JACK] Into the woods!
To get the money! Into the woods
Then out of the woods
[CINDERELLA] And home before it's dark!
To go to the Festival! (blackout)

[LITTLE RED RIDING HOOD] Baker: How am I supposed to get it?

Mother said, "Straight ahead,"

Little Red Ridinghood: My Granny made it for me.
Baker: Take the cow and go home. I will carry this out in my

[CINDERELLA, spoken]
(BAKER sleeps under a tree. music; JACK appears And the little you own-
suddenly from the trees, carrying an oversized money sack) The fun is done
You steal what you can and run
[JACK]
There are Giants in the sky! And you scramble down
There are big tall terrible Giants in the sky! And you look below
And the world you know
When you're way up high Begins to grow:
And you look below The roof, the house and your
At the world you've left Mother at the door
And the things you know The roof, the house and the world you never thought to
Little more than a glance explore
Is enough to show And you think of all the things you've seen
You just how small you are And you wish that you could live in between
And you're back again
When you're way up high Only different than before
And you're on your own After the sky
In a world like none
That you've ever known There are Giants in the sky!
Where the sky is lead There are big, tall, terrible, awesome, scary, wonderful
And the earth is stone Giants in the sky!
You're free, to do
Whatever pleases you (BAKER stirs; JACK bounds over to him)
Exploring things you'd never dare
Cause you don't care Jack: Good fortune! Good fortune, sir! Look what I have!
When suddenly there's Here’s five gold pieces.

A big tall terrible Giant at the door Baker (astounded): Five gold pieces! (He examines the gold)

[BAKER, spoken] Jack: I had more, but Mother made me surrender them. She
A Giant? allowed me these five to do with as I pleased.

A big tall terrible lady giant sweepin' the floor Baker: Oh, my;
And she gives you food
And she gives you rest Jack: (looking around) Where is Milky-White?
And she draws you close
To her Giant breast Baker: Milky-White is back home with my wife.
And you know things now
That you never knew before Jack: Let’s go find them. (JACK starts to leave)
Not till the sky
Baker: Wait!
Only just when you've made
A friend and all (BAKER returns money to JACK)
And you know she's big
But you don't feel small I don’t know that I wish to sell;
Someone bigger than her
Comes along the hall Jack: But you said I might buy her back.
To swallow you for lunch
Baker: I know, but I’m not certain that five gold pieces would-
And your heart is lead -
And your stomach is stone
And you're really scared Jack: Are you saying that you wish more money?
Being all alone...
And it's then that you miss Baker: More money is always--
All the things you've known
And the world you've left Jack: (hands him gold) Keep this. I will go fetch more.
My sweetness calls. (tough) By tomorrow midnight--deliver
Baker: Wait. I didn’t say-- the items or you’ll wish you never thought to have a child!

(JACK exits; BAKER looks at money) (WITCH puts a spell on them, they double over in pain as
WITCH leaves)
Five gold pieces! With this money I could buy baking supplies
for a year. I could buy a new thatched roof and a new
chimney. Baker: I don’t like that woman.

(BAKER’S WIFE appeared from another tree) Baker’s Wife: (contrite) I’m sorry I lost the cow.

What are you doing here now? Baker: I shouldn’t have yelled. (beat) Now please, go back to
the village.
Baker’s Wife: (quickly switching gears) I see you’ve the red
cape. (BAKER’S WIFE annoyed, turns her back and begins to walk
away)
Baker: Yes. I’ve the cape. Only two items left to locate.
I will make things right! And then we can just go about our

Rapunzel’s Prince: She was lovely.

that. Have you no sense? Cinderella’s Prince: The loveliest.

(hears RAPUNZEL in the background) Rapunzel’s Prince: I am not certain of that! I must confess, I
too have found a lovely maiden. She lives here in the woods.
