ABSTRACT
A high-wing, four-engine, T-tailed military transport aircraft, the multi-service
C-17 can carry large equipment, supplies and troops directly to small airfields in
harsh terrain anywhere in the world. The massive, sturdy, long-haul aircraft
tackles distance, destination and heavy, oversized payloads in unpredictable
conditions. It has delivered cargo in every worldwide operation since the 1990s.

INTRODUCTION
Boeing has partnered with the U.S. Air Force on C-17 sustainment since the
delivery of the first aircraft in 1993. With a focus on high performance at an
affordable cost, Boeing provides sustainment and maintenance for global C-17
customers in eight allied countries. The C-17 fleet has a best-in-class combined
dollar per flight hour and mission capable rate, performing at the highest level of
readiness worldwide.
LITERATURE SURVEY
A two-year study of the defense transportation system by the USAF Mobility
command concluded that the present transportation fleet will fall far short of
future transportation requirements. The report, called Mobility Requirements
Study-2005 (MRS-05), concluded that the minimum strategic airlift requirement
was 54.5 million ton miles per day, though that figure may rise due to an increased
demand on the airlift fleet after 9/11. Congress approved procurement of an
additional 60 C-17s, to bring the total number of C-17s in the fleet to 120, but the
USAF may need as many as 222 to satisfy future demand. These 60 follow-on
aircraft will be delivered through FY 07, funded to maintain the current C-17
delivery of 15 aircraft per year
