Teaching
In the current academic year (2010-11) I teach on the Macroeconomic Environment class of the
Department of Economics MSc EMP course and some of the applied economics content on the
EPSRC-funded Doctoral Training Centre for Wind Energy Systems (for PhD students). In
previous years, I have lectured and tutored large and small classes (including computer labs) for
undergraduate and postgraduate classes including Economics 101 (1st year), Macroeconomics 2
(previously Introduction to Analytical Economics) (second year), Economic Policy and
Applications (Honours year). I have also tutored on the online offering of the Department’s MSc
EMP course in the Macroeconomic Environment class.
Research projects
This project will demonstrate the feasibility and viability of producing mari-fuels from
marine biomass derived from both macroalgal (seaweeds) and microalgal (single celled
plants) sources as an alternative to agri-fuels production from terrestrial land plants.
Our project is explicitly examining the micro- and macro-economic feasibility and impacts
of such developments on the northern Irish and Scottish economies, and also a sub-
regional levels within these economies.
This consortium is led by Scottish Association for Marine Science, and also includes researchers
from Centre for Renewable Energy at Dundalk Institute of Technology; Centre for Sustainable
Technologies, University of Ulster; Institute of Technology, Sligo; and, QUESTOR, The Queen’s
University Belfast.
In addition to the above, I have also contributed to a large number of funded research projects in
the FAI over the last nine years, including:
SuperGen Highly Distributed Energy Futures: “HiDEF”, with Peter McGregor and Igor
Eromenko (all University of Strathclyde), Engineering and Physical science Research
