Course name : Introduction to Biochemistry
Course code : SBK 1013
Credit Hour : 2+1
Pre requisite : None
LECTURER’S INFORMATION:
COURSE SYNOPSIS :
This course discusses the basic chemical reactions in cells at the molecular level. It includes
biomolecules, enzymes, and metabolism of carbohydrate, lipid, amino acids and
nucleotides. Enzyme characteristics and factors influence its kinetics will be discussed.
Catabolism and anabolism processes and their applications in life are also discussed. Basic
biochemical reactions in photosynthesis, aerobic and anaerobic metabolisms are included.

LEARNING OUTCOMES:
3. Design a mini project and carry out experiments to prove certain principles in
biochemistry. (C5, P4)
4. Relate the products from metabolism and justify the interrelationships between them
(C5).
5. Develop skills in team work during laboratory work and mini projects. (TS3, A2)
TRANSFERABLE SKILLS:
Skills in this course are developed through laboratory experiments and tutorial discussion.
Skills are assessed through coursework including report and presentation/exhibition the
product of the mini project.
