Introduction
You are a student for the master painter Vincent Van Gogh. He needs a new painting
for an art competition and he wants the class to place first. The challenge is to make
the most range of color using tints and shades, to get first place in the art
competition. The problem is, van Gogh decided to take a weekend vacation and
needs your help to create the painting. He left some information about his
techniques for research to help this painting come along nicely.

What are some techniques the master painter used?

What are some of paintings that give you the most inspiration?

The Task
The students will learn about Vincent van Gogh’s paintings and create paintings of
their own while using their imagination and applying art concepts such as shades and
tints of color.

Read the first link to understand the information from Van Gogh.

You will need:

-Van Gogh worksheet and pencil
-internet access (provided in school)
-acrylic/oil paint
-mixing pallet
-pallet knife (optional)
-canvas board
-paintbrushes
-water/cleaning supplies

The Process
Becoming a master painter requires a lot of studying and practice. After mastering
the painting technique and knowledge of tints and shades, you’ll be one step closer
to a master.
1. First, we will review the vocabulary dealing with tints and shades.
2. In groups of 2-3, students will read links and make sure other students have
a decent understanding of Vincent Van Gogh, and even the content they wish
to paint.
3. Students will submit a brainstorm idea of their painting and a summary of
understanding of their painting teacher.
4. Students will gather materials and work on painting alone for 4 class periods.

Conclusion
Students will be given the opportunity to express a more abstract way of art by
researching the famous artist Vincent van Gogh and learning his techniques and
other artists’ styles. The take away factor is to realize that not all art needs to be
clean and perfect, sometimes the imperfect is what makes things interesting.
