Synopsis
Kahlil Gibran meets George W. Bush meets Robert Frost: who'd have thought that America's most outspoken Secretary of Defence
in decades would have turned public commentary into a form of poetry? Donald Rumsfeld is not just a two-time Secretary of
Defence, former CEO, former White House Chief of Staff, and the most outspoken and forceful civilian military leader in recent
American history. He is also, intentionally or not, a poet. A last, the ubiquitous and at times unintelligible U.S. Secretary of
Defence has been deciphered by humorist Hart Seely, who found that the rambling raconteur is best understood when set in verse.
Seely uncovers zen poems and lyrics, haikus and sonnets and has plucked the golden apples from 'D.H.' Rumsfeld's tree to present
over 100 hilarious gems drawn from Rummy's public statements. Whether you love him or hate him, they're irresistible. As we
know, There are known knowns. There are things we know we know. We also know There are known unknowns. That is to say We
know there are some things We do not know. But there are also unknown unknowns, The ones we don't know we don't know.

Hart Seely, the editor of this brilliant tome, has compiled some of the gems of 21th century verse of both political and
philosophical significance. How about this, "The Unknown", full of rhyme, rhythm and alliteration, not to mention repetition, to
offer a fresh new awareness on world and worldly matters:
As we know,
There are known knowns.
There are things we know we know.
We also know
There are known unknowns.
That is to say
We know there are some things
We do not know.
But there are also unknown unknowns,
The ones we don't know we don't know.

Amazon.co.uk Review
Arguably the greatest black comedy ever made, Stanley Kubrick's cold war classic is the ultimate satire of the nuclear age. Dr. Strangelove is
a perfect spoof of political and military insanity, beginning when General Jack D. Ripper (Sterling Hayden), a maniacal warrior obsessed with
"the purity of precious bodily fluids," mounts his singular campaign against Communism by ordering a squadron of B-52 bombers to attack
the Soviet Union. The Soviets counter the threat with a so-called "Doomsday Device," and the world hangs in the balance while the US
president (Peter Sellers) engages in hilarious hot-line negotiations with his Soviet counterpart. Sellers also plays a British military attaché and
the mad bomb-maker Dr. Strangelove; George C. Scott is outrageously frantic as General Buck Turgidson, whose presidential advice consists
mainly of panic and statistics about "acceptable losses." With dialogue ("You can't fight here! This is the war room!") and images (Slim
Pickens' character riding the bomb to oblivion) that have become a part of our cultural vocabulary, Kubrick's film regularly appears on critics'
lists of the all-time best. --Jeff Shannon, Amazon.com --This text refers to another version of this video.
DVD Description
Stanley Kubrick's classic black comedy about a group of war-eager military men who plan a nuclear apocalypse is both funny and frightening
- and seems as relevant today as ever. Through a series of military and political accidents, two psychotic generals - U.S. Air Force
Commander Jack D. Ripper (Sterling Hayden) and Joint Chief of Staff "Buck" Turgidson (George C. Scott) trigger an ingenious, irrevocable
scheme to attack Russia's strategic targets with nuclear bombs. The brains behind the scheme belong to Dr. Strangelove (Peter Sellers), a
wheelchair-bound nuclear scientist who has bizarre ideas about man's future. The president (also Sellers) is helpless to stop the bombers, as
is Captain Mandrake (Sellers once again). Dr. Strangelove is truly a brilliant film classic.

How best to tackle the subject of nuclear war? Some would say a documentary or a hard hitting docu-drama. Perhaps an action movie or
thriller. Some might even use science fiction or perhaps horror. But comedy? Black comedy to tackle the most horrific subject imaginable?
It'll never work!
Stanley Kubrick, genius that he was turned in his finest film in 1963 with Dr. Strangelove or: How I Learned to Stop Worrying and Love the
Bomb. Peter Sellers stars in three parts as the quiet but determined Captain Mandrake, the equally determined but powerless President
Merkin Mufflin and the crazed, former Nazi Dr. Strangelove.
Kubrick was given the story but thought it so ridiculous that the only way to tackle it was through black comedy. George C. Scott's gum-
chewing, blustering, patriotic, gung-ho general is hysterical, as is Major 'Nuclear combat toe-to-toe with the Rooskies' Kong aboard the
bomber. Dr. Strangelove with his malfunctioning, robotic hand is another highlight. Many lines will have you rolling over with laughter; 'I
can no longer sit and back and allow, communist infiltration, communist indoctrination, communist subversion, and the international
communist conspiracy, to sap and impurify...ALL OF OUR PRECIOUS BODILY FLUIDS' and the unforgettable 'Gentlemen you can't fight in
here, this is the War room'.
The film manages to get its point across far better than any serious film, as one is left laughing at the sheer stupidity of the paranoia of the
main characters and the mindless futility of nuclear war. Dr. Stranglove, is one of the finest and funniest films ever made.
"Dr. Strangelove or How I Learned to Stop Worrying and Love the Bomb" is an old movie that tackles a difficult subject, the end of the
world as we know it due to a nuclear war. Despite that, it is simply brilliant, and not boring at all.
Why? Well, there are different reasons to say that, but I think I'll point out only those that I deem more important:
1- To start with, even though this film was made in 1964, director Stanley Kubrick managed to create a timeless masterpiece that depicts,
in a sardonic way, the dangers of nuclear war. The message of this movie still comes across as valid, albeit nowadays for different reasons.
2- Secondly, even though the subject is undeniably serious, this movie is a black comedy that makes you laugh. If that is difficult to
believe, take into account that the plot involves a crazy general (Sterling Hayden) that sidesteps the chain of command in order to launch a
nuclear airstrike on the URSS, something his aide (Captain Mandrake, played by Peter Sellers), the President (played by Peter Sellers!!)
and many of his advisors (including Dr. Strangelove, a scientist also played by Peter Sellers) try to stop. But will that be possible? And what
about the Soviet "Doomsday Machine", that will be triggered automatically by any nuclear attack on Soviet soil?
All in all, I think this is the kind of movie you simply must watch. Highly recommended :)

Naturally from an acting point of view Peter Sellers dominates this film. Playing three roles: The RAF Captain, US President Muffley and Dr
Stranglove. Each is a comedic performance of brilliance. The RAF Captain is the voice of sanity to Sterling Haydens's mad US General. Its
more than just a funny performance, Sellers acting portrays a desperation in his dealings with Gen Jack D Ripper. Having said that Sellers
dominates, don't think this is one-man show. Both Sterling Hayden and George C Scott give stand-out performances.
The film is full of great visual gags and some wonderful one-liners. "No fighting in the war room" being a favourite of mine.
The film satarises the cold war paranoia of the 60's and was made soon after the Cuban missile crisis.
Of course we mustn't forget the mastermind behind the film - Stanley Kubrick. He directed and co-wrote the film. In some of the brief
attack scenes on the airbase you can see how he would later shoot Full Metal Jacket. It is an endlessly watchable film that any sane person
will want to own!
Where to start with such a film? What is its greatest strength? Well I suppose that most obviously it is hilarious; which relies on the fact
that it is brilliant acted, Peter Sellars stands out here, SUPERBLY written, wonderfully absurd (as satire should be) yet equally dark and
chilling (as satire should be) as well as being directed perfectly-each shot stands out and adds to the atmosphere-i.e. there's never a dull
moment. The story is equally excellent, thrilling as well as funny, with great characterisation-its kinda odd really but every time I see that
crazy general I think of Donald Rumsfeld! Hmmmmmm... I wonder why that is????? Every character, from the generals, to the pilots of the
planes, to the president, to Strangelove himself(the German who's arm is a Nazi-if that dosen't get you nothing will), to the British air
officer, to the politicians, to the Russian ambassador and even to the unseen Russian president there is not a stone left unturned-no
character is left without attention to detail-I think a true mark of Kubrick's brilliance.
A MUST FOR ANY MOVIE FAN-AND CERTAINLY FOR ANY KUBRICK FAN.
You might think that this powerful, indeed blood-chilling satirical vision of the insanity of nuclear brinkmanship would be redundant in the
post-cold war era. On the contrary, the world of Bush and Rumsfeld fits very comfortably in the fabric of Kubrik's realpolitik. Bush might
lack President Muffley's diffidence in the face of doomsday scenario's, but perhaps the gung-ho Texan bomber pilot Major Kong was cast
with a foresight none of us could have predicted, 40 years ahead of his time!
This is a masterpiece, played without a false note by a truly memorable cast of characters portrayed straight(ish) by one of the finest acting
ensembles I can recall seeing in any movie. Sellers is great, of course, but so are George C Scott, Keenan Wynn, Slim Pickens, and (my
own personal favourite) Sterling Hayden as Gen Ripper, among other gems.
The fact that substantial portions of screenplay are improvised and changes to the plot (including Slim Pickens's bareback ride on the WMD
targeted on a Russian ICBM base) continued right up to the last minute is remarkable since the whole film is executed with frightening
precision. Every speech and considered analysis of the realities of MAD strategy like a fresh move on the chessboard planned five moves in
advance, yet the very random and unpredictable behaviour of the human being (in this case Gen Jack D Ripper) and machine throw the
whole system into total chaos... and that is as true today as it has ever been!
As for the Sellers factor, this is probably not his greatest performance(s) - that privelege must surely go to Being There - but he carries off
three enthralling characters with a totally instinctive and bravura acting that you could not doubt for a moment his genius.
But the star of the show must surely be Stanley Kubrick for keeping on the rails what might in lesser hands have gone completely over the
top. Whatever madness appears on screen, Kubrik ensures it is never less that believable. And with that power, the film is a not a political
comedy but a political weapon.
One last thought: Kubrik packs into 90 minutes what many directors would have bloated out into 3 hours. Would that every film could be
so razor sharp that not so much as one word is out of place! Rest in peace, Stanley.

Two questions about the Euston phenomenon arise from its life so far: first, is this a genuinely new form of political
organisation that deserves attention?; secondly, are the politics of this thing actually any good?
"Among hyperventilating left-liberals, hatred of Bush is so intense that rational argument usually goes out the window. The result is a
mindless cacophony."
