CHAPTER 2
PROFILE OF
MEDICAL GLOVE INDUSTRY
CHAPTER 2

INDUSTRIAL PROFILE OF MICDICAL GLOVE INDUSTRY

IN TROD UCTION

Medical gloves are disposable gloves used during medical examinations and

procedures that help prevent contamination between caregivers and patients. There

are two main types of gloves : exam and surgical. Safecare Rubber Products Pvt. Ltd.,

Kochiwhich comes under the medical glove industry produces both these types of

glove. In this chapter, the details regarding global scenario, Indian and state wise

scenario of the medical glove industry are explained.

GLOBAL SCENARIO

In 1980 William Stewart Halsted was the first to use sterilized medical gloves

when he was at Johns Hopkins university. With the participation of germ theory

Halsted was using the carbonic acid introduced by Joseph Lister to sterilize his hand

and nurse? s hand. She was sensitive with chemical and it was damaging the skin on

her hand. So he asked the Good Year Tyre and Rubber Company if they could make

glove of rubber that can be dipped in carbonic acid. The disposable latex medical

gloves were manufactured in 1964 by Ansell. Today modem techniques, electronics

and innovation have led to a competitive, low priced gloves industry offering almost

any type of gloves a person could desire. With its low cost labour base, China has

come to dominate the glove industry. USA, India, Japan and China become leading

producers due to their cheap labor supply, which is an important factory of glove

industry. About 6150 countries are producing latex gloves.

The world market for examination gloves is over 18. 5 billion per annum and

that of surgical gloves is 2. 3 billion pairs per annum. About 60% of the world market

demand is supplied by Malaysia and 30% by Thailand. The balance of 10% is shared

by other countries with an Indian share nearly at 0. 5%.

Glove industry has become an industry in 1834, when the glove cutting die

was invented in France. The advancement of medical technology has caused better

awareness on then usage of gloves for prevention. Worlc1 over there was a sudden

spurt in the demand of disposable gloves. Glove made of natural latex have a better

feel and sensitivity and they have a breathing property which makes it preferred over

gloves made of nitrite, vinyl and other synthetic materials. The price factor also

favors natural latex gloves. The nearest cheapest alternative, I. e., nitrite glove cost

over two to three times of natural rubber gloves.

INDIAN SCENARIO

India is the fourth largest producer of natural rubber and second largest in

world consumption. With around 6000 units comprising 30 large scale, 300 medium

scale and around 5600 SS1ltiny sector units, manufacturing 35000 rubber products,

employing 400,00,000 people, including around 22000 technically qualified support

personal, with a turnover of 200 billion and contributing Rs. 40 billion to the national

exchequer through taxes, duties and other levies, the Indian rubber industry plays a

core sector role in the Indian national economy. The wide range of rubber products

manufactured by Indian rubber industry comprises all types of heavy duty earth

moving tyres, automobile tyres, tubes, automobile parts, footwear, belts, wires, etc.

The products manufactured also cover hi-tech industrial items.

According to the Federation of Hotels & Restaurant Association of India,

more than 17 million work in the hospitality sector in India. This number in the

organized sector shows that the use of gloves is widespread. The demand for
4

industrial gloves are quite large in India, where there are 31. 15 million micro, small

and medium enterprises which employs 73. 2 million persons, according to MSME

Ministry. They contribute 45% to country's industrial output and 40% to the gross

domestic product. Engineers, technologist, technicians and shop floor workers in the

factories raise substantial demand for industrial gloves.

STATE SCENARIO

The raw material for glove industry is rubber. Kerala is a state, which is rich

in that raw material. 5460 companies are producing latex gloves in the state. Kerala

with a total area of 3. 80 lakh hectares are under the rubber cultivation and an annual

Production of 3. 70 lakh tonnes, production over 90% of India's natural rubber of the

total area, 92% is represented by small holdings with an average area of around 5

hectares. A sound network of intermediate rubber units engaged in rubber

compounding, crumb rubber manufacture etc. Exist in this 'Gods Own Country‘.
