Time: 1𝟐 Hours Total Mark: 30
SECTION: A

1 Attempt all parts. Write answer of each part in short. (4 x 2 = 8)

a) Describe the tool represented by 10-0-6-6-8-8-1mm in ASA system.

b) What is 18-4-1 type of tool material?
c) What do you know about continuous chips with BUE?
d) Name any four types of abrasives used in grinding wheels.
SECTION: B

2 Attempt any THREE questions from this section. (3X4=12)

(a) What are the basic requirements of cutting fluids in metal machining? Explain with their main
applications.
(b) How does the cutting process parameter affect the cutting tool wear in single point cutting tool?
(c) What is the difference between orthogonal cutting and oblique cuttings?
(d) Distinguish between continuous and discontinuous chips.
(e) Establish the formula to find out the shear angle in orthogonal machining process.

SECTION: C
3 Attempt any TWO questions from this section (2x5=10)

(a) Explain Merchant ’s force circle diagram and derive the following Merchant’s shear angle
relationship
2 +  - α = Π/2
(b) Describe types of bonds for bonded abrasives on a grinding wheel.
(c) During the machining of AISI-1025 steel, with 0-10-6-6-8-90-1 mm ORS shaped tool the following
observation were taken :
Feed: 0.5 mm/rev Depth of cut = 2.5 mm
Cutting Speed = 40 m/min Shear angle = 200
Power consumed while machining = 3.2 kW
Power consumed while running idle = 0.6 kW
Determine:
(i) The cutting force (ii) Chip thickness ratio
(iii) Normal pressure on the chip and (iv) Chip thickness.
