History of the Profession


• Believed that the Ancient Egyptians started interior design
• The roman and greek civilization continued to expand on the art of interior desighning
• The romans did several things including combining the rt of cmfort and beauty, and making
home interiors reflect wealth and status.
• Both the Roman, and the Greeks used items such as vases, mosaic floors, and wall
paintings/frescoes to do interior designs.
• Next, the was a mobemebnt broughtb by Medievel Europe and the rise of the Chroistioan
Church, refered to as the Dark Ages.
o Inclueded somber wood paneling, minimal furniture, stone-slab floors
o Most of the items were muted colors
• After the Dark Ages Europeans began to reintroduce color and ornamentation to their hjomes
• In the 15th and 16th centuries, the French Reneassance led to na new focus on arft and beauty
• Spaces were created with el,aborate elements, like marbl;e floors
• After the renassance the ornate Italian Barque sty;e became popular thgroughout Europe

• Starting in the early 1800s, in Europe and Amercia, a trend had strted towards more freedom
and eclecticism I n interior design
• In the 20th centurary, the new inventions of stoves, washing machines, televisions, and phones
produced a new problem for interior desighners. They now had to make spaces more functional.
• Now interior desighners have acces to technology that helps them pklan how to design making it
easier for them.

Daily Professional Tasks


• Specialize in planning, designing, and detailing the production of an environment.
• Search and bid on a new project that you will be working on if needed.
• Meets with clients and others such as builders, architects, etc. to discuss needs of client.
• Discuss how they can make the space functional, safe, and to the liking of the client.
• Use of a software like AutoCAD for the design process to create models and visuals.
• Researching and preparing plans, diagrams or sketches for interior constructions,
materials, finishes, lighting and furnishing.
• Placing orders for materials when needed.
• They must select the suppliers of labour and materials that that will be using.
• Estimating costs and submitting quotes for client approval.
• Inspecting and supervising the work of trades people to ensure that quality and safety
standards, costs and deadlines are met.

• Kitchen Designer
o Create kitchens for clients
o Kitchen appliances include:
▪ Cabinets, stove or oven, fridge, microwave, dishwasher
o Make sure that the kitchen is functional, up to date, and in building codes
o Design home kitchens, hospital kitchens, cafeteria kitchens or even restraint kitchens
• Corporate designers
o Create designs for professional workplaces
▪ Focus on making the spaces that are efficient functional, and safe for the
employees
▪ Often include designs that reflect the company's brand I n their designs
• Healthcare designers
o Design healthcare centers, clinics, doctors’ offices, hospitals, and residential care
facilities
o Design is different for different types of facilities
o Use evidence-based design process in designing and renovating facilities
• Home lighting advisers
o create, design, and place cost-effective, innovative, and energy-efficient lighting
products
o Possibly work in film and theater
o experts in the functionality and aesthetics produced by lights in both interior and
exterior landscapes.

o specialize in kitchens and bathrooms
o Have a lot of knowledge in a variety of cabinets, fixtures, appliances, plumbing, and
electrical solutions

o use strategies to improve energy and water efficiencies and indoor air quality
o Specify environmentally preferable products, such as bamboo and cork for floors
• Universal designers
o renovate spaces in order to make them more accessible
o Often renovate spaces for elderly people and people with special needs

Education Requirements
• Pre-college classes including drafting and design, drawing, interior design, and CAD
• Entry level education includes a bachelor’s degree or a master's degree. Of course, students can
continue their education level to become more advanced in the profession. Examples:
o Bachelor of Arts (BA)
o Bachelor of Science (BS)
o Bachelor of Fine Arts (BFA)
o Master of Arts (MA)
o Master of Fine Arts (MFA)

Professional Requirements (licensures, etc.)


• Build a portfolio!
• Participate in pro bono projects
• Programs that include hands-on activities and design studio options, like professional
internships, can be an educational requirement for an Interior Design career.
• Many states require work experience that combines with the educational pathway they have
taken, including the passing of a state-approved exam. The National Council for Interior Design
Qualification (NCIDQ) is an example. (may need up to 2 years of work experience to take the
exam)
