Celebrant Let us pray.

(The people kneel.)

ALMIGHTY God, unto whom all hearts are open, all desires known, and from whom no secrets are
hid; Cleanse the thoughts of our hearts by the inspiration of thy Holy Spirit, that we may perfectly love
thee, and worthily magnify thy holy Name; through Christ our Lord. Amen.

Celebrant Hear what our Lord Jesus Christ saith.

THOU shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy mind. This
is the first and great commandment. And the second is like unto it; Thou shalt love thy neighbour as
thyself. On these two commandments hang all the Law and the Prophets.

Kyrie Willan

Celebrant The Lord be with you.

People And with thy spirit.
Celebrant Let us pray.

The Collect of the Day

ALMIGHTY and everlasting God, whose will it is to restore all things in thy well-beloved Son, the
King of kings and Lord of lords: Mercifully grant that the peoples of the earth, divided and enslaved
by sin, may be freed and brought together under his most gracious rule; who liveth and reigneth with
thee and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever. Amen.

(The people sit.)

The First Lesson is written in Twenty-Third Chapter of the Book of Jeremiah, beginning at the
First verse.
“Woe to the shepherds who destroy and scatter the sheep of my pasture!” declares the Lord. Therefore
thus says the Lord, the God of Israel, concerning the shepherds who care for my people: “You have
scattered my flock and have driven them away, and you have not attended to them. Behold, I will
attend to you for your evil deeds, declares the Lord. Then I will gather the remnant of my flock out
of all the countries where I have driven them, and I will bring them back to their fold, and they shall
be fruitful and multiply. I will set shepherds over them who will care for them, and they shall fear no
more, nor be dismayed, neither shall any be missing, declares the Lord.
“Behold, the days are coming, declares the Lord, when I will raise up for David a
righteous Branch, and he shall reign as king and deal wisely, and shall execute justice and
righteousness in the land. In his days Judah will be saved, and Israel will dwell securely. And this is
the name by which he will be called: ‘The Lord is our righteousness.’”
Here endeth the Lesson.

(The people stand.)

Psalm 46
God is our refuge and strength, *
a very present help in trouble.
Therefore we will not fear, though the earth be moved, *
and though the mountains be toppled into the
depths of the sea;
Though its waters rage and foam, *
and though the mountains tremble at its tumult.
The Lord of hosts is with us; *
the God of Jacob is our stronghold.

There is a river whose streams make glad the city of God, *

the holy habitation of the Most High.
God is in the midst of her;
she shall not be overthrown; *
God shall help her at the break of day.
The nations make much ado, and the kingdoms are shaken; *
God has spoken, and the earth shall melt away.
The Lord of hosts is with us; *
the God of Jacob is our stronghold.

Page 4
Come now and look upon the works of the Lord, *
what awesome things he has done on earth.
It is he who makes war to cease in all the world; *
he breaks the bow, and shatters the spear,
and burns the shields with fire.
“Be still, then, and know that I am God; *
I will be exalted among the nations;
I will be exalted in the earth.”
The Lord of hosts is with us; *
the God of Jacob is our stronghold.

Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Ghost:*
as it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be, world without end. Amen.

(The people sit.)

The Epistle is written in the First Chapter of the Letter of St. Paul to the Colossians, beginning at
the Eleventh Verse.
Be strengthened with all power, according to his glorious might, for all endurance and patience with
joy; giving thanks to the Father, who has qualified you to share in the inheritance of the saints in
light. He has delivered us from the domain of darkness and transferred us to the kingdom of his
beloved Son, in whom we have redemption, the forgiveness of sins.
He is the image of the invisible God, the firstborn of all creation. For by him all things were
created, in heaven and on earth, visible and invisible, whether thrones or dominions or rulers or
authorities—all things were created through him and for him. And he is before all things, and in him
all things hold together. And he is the head of the body, the church. He is the beginning, the firstborn
from the dead, that in everything he might be preeminent. For in him all the fullness of God was
pleased to dwell, and through him to reconcile to himself all things, whether on earth or in
heaven, making peace by the blood of his cross.
Here endeth the Epistle.

Gospel Hymn - 467 Sing, my soul

The Holy Gospel is written in the Twenty-First Chapter of the Gospel According to St. Luke,
beginning at the Fifth Verse.
People Glory be to thee, O Lord.
The people stood by, watching Jesus on the cross; but the rulers scoffed at him, saying, “He saved
others; let him save himself, if he is the Christ of God, his Chosen One!” The soldiers also mocked
him, coming up and offering him sour wine and saying, “If you are the King of the Jews, save
yourself!” There was also an inscription over him, “This is the King of the Jews.”
One of the criminals who were hanged railed at him, saying, “Are you not the Christ? Save
yourself and us!” But the other rebuked him, saying, “Do you not fear God, since you are under the
same sentence of condemnation? And we indeed justly, for we are receiving the due reward of our
deeds; but this man has done nothing wrong.” And he said, “Jesus, remember me when you come into
your kingdom.” And he said to him, “Truly, I say to you, today you will be with me in paradise.”
People Praise be to thee, O Christ.

The Nicene Creed
(The people stand.)
I believe in one God the Father Almighty, Maker of heaven and earth, And of all things visible
and invisible: And in one Lord Jesus Christ, the only-begotten Son of God; Begotten of his
Father before all worlds, God of God, Light of Light, Very God of very God; Begotten, not
made; Being of one substance with the Father; By whom all things were made: Who for us men
and for our salvation came down from heaven, And was incarnate by the Holy Ghost of the
Virgin Mary, And was made man: And was crucified also for us under Pontius Pilate; He
suffered and was buried: And the third day he rose again according to the Scriptures: And
ascended into heaven, And sitteth on the right hand of the Father: And he shall come again, with
glory, to judge both the quick and the dead; Whose kingdom shall have no end. And I believe
in the Holy Ghost, the Lord, and Giver of Life, Who proceedeth from the Father and the Son;
Who with the Father and the Son together is worshipped and glorified; Who spake by the
Prophets: And I believe one Catholic and Apostolic Church: I acknowledge one Baptism for the
remission of sins: And I look for the Resurrection of the dead: And the Life of the world to come.
Amen.

Offertory Sentence
(The people stand until the ushers have handed the bread and wine to the acolyte.)
Lay not up for yourselves treasures upon earth, where moth and rust doth corrupt, and where thieves
break through and steal: but lay up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where neither moth nor rust
doth corrupt, and where thieves do not break through nor steal. (St. Matt. vi. 19, 20.)

Offertory Anthem 9:00 a.m. - St. George's Choir

Rejoice the Lord is King
F. Ashdown

Rejoice the Lord is King, your Lord and King adore. Mortals give thanks and sing and triumph evermore.
Lift up your hearts; lift up your voice, rejoice, again I say rejoice The Lord, The Savior reigns, the God of
truth and love; when he had purged our sins he took his seat above. Lift up your hearts; life up your voice
rejoice, again I say rejoice. His kingdom cannot fail; he rules o'er earth and heaven; the keys of death and
hell to Christ the Lord are given. Lift up your hearts; lift up your voice, rejoice, again I say rejoice. Rejoice
in glorious hope, our Lord the judge shall come, and take his servants up to their eternal home. Lift up you
hearts, lift up your voice, rejoice, again I say rejoice.

Come , Thou Fount of Every Blessig
Trad. arr. H. Hopson
Page 7
Come thou fount of every blessing tune my heart to sing thy grace! Streams of mercy never ceasing, call for
songs of loudest praise. Teach me some melodious sonnet, sung by flaming tongues above. Praise the mont!
Oh, fix me on it, mount of God’s unchanging love. Here I find my greatest treasure, hither by thy help I’ve
come; and I hope by thy good pleasure, safely to arrive at home. Jesus sought me when a stranger
wand’ring from the fold of God; he to rescue me from danger, interposed his precious blood. Oh to grace
how great a debtor, daily I’m constrained to be! Let thy goodness, like a fetter, bind my wand’ring heart to
thee; prone to wander, Lord I feel it, prone to leave the God I love; here’s my heart, oh, take and seal it,
seal it for thy courts above.

Then the Celebrant shall say,

Let us pray for the whole state of Christ’s Church.

(The people kneel.)

Page 8
ALMIGHTY and everliving God, who by thy holy Apostle hast taught us to make prayers, and
supplications, and to give thanks for all men; We humbly beseech thee most mercifully to accept our alms
and oblations, and to receive these our prayers, which we offer unto thy Divine Majesty; beseeching thee
to inspire continually the Universal Church with the spirit of truth, unity, and concord; and grant that all
those who do confess thy holy Name may agree in the truth of thy holy Word, and live in unity and godly
love.

We beseech thee also, so to direct and dispose the hearts of all Christian rulers, that they may truly and
impartially administer justice, to the punishment of wickedness and vice, and to the maintenance of thy
true religion, and virtue.

Give grace, O heavenly Father, to all Bishops and other Ministers, that they may, both by their life and
doctrine, set forth thy true and lively Word, and rightly and duly administer thy holy Sacraments.

And to all thy People give thy heavenly grace; [and especially ____] and to this congregation here present;
that, with meek heart and due reverence, they may hear, and receive thy holy Word; truly serving thee in
holiness and righteousness all the days of their life.

And we most humbly beseech thee, of thy goodness, O Lord, to comfort and succour all those who, in this
transitory life, are in trouble, sorrow, need, sickness, or any other adversity, [especially ____].

And we also bless thy holy Name for all thy servants departed this life in thy faith and fear, [especially
____]; beseeching thee to grant them continual growth in thy love and service, and to give us grace so to
follow their good examples, that with them we may be partakers of thy heavenly kingdom. Grant this,
O Father, for Jesus Christ’s sake, our only Mediator and Advocate. Amen.

Then the Celebrant shall say,

YE who do truly and earnestly repent you of your sins, and are in love and charity with your neighbors,
and intend to lead a new life, following the commandments of God, and walking from henceforth in his
holy ways: Draw near with faith, and take this holy Sacrament to your comfort; and make your humble
confession to Almighty God, devoutly kneeling.

ALMIGHTY God, Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, Maker of all things, Judge of all men; We
acknowledge and bewail our manifold sins and wickedness, Which we, from time to time, most
grievously have committed, By thought, word, and deed, Against thy Divine Majesty, Provoking
most justly thy wrath and indignation against us. We do earnestly repent, And are heartily sorry
for these our misdoings; The remembrance of them is grievous unto us; The burden of them is
intolerable. Have mercy upon us, Have mercy upon us, most merciful Father; For thy Son our Lord
Jesus Christ’s sake, Forgive us all that is past; And grant that we may ever hereafter Serve and
please thee In newness of life, To the honour and glory of thy Name; Through Jesus Christ our Lord.
Amen.
Page 9
The Bishop when present, or the Priest, stands and says,
ALMIGHTY God, our heavenly Father, who of his great mercy hath promised forgiveness of sins to
all those who with hearty repentance and true faith turn unto him, have mercy upon you, pardon and
deliver you from all your sins, confirm and strengthen you in all goodness, and bring you to everlasting
life; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

Hear what comfortable words our Saviour Christ saith unto all who truly turn to him.
COME unto me, all ye that travail and are heavy laden, and I will refresh you. (Matthew 11:28)

So God loved the world, that he gave his only-begotten Son, to the end that all that believe in him should
not perish, but have everlasting life. (John 3:16)

Hear also what Saint Paul saith.

This is a true saying, and worthy of all men to be received, That Christ Jesus came into the world to save
sinners. (1 Timothy 1:15)

Hear also what Saint John saith.

If any man sin, we have an Advocate with the Father, Jesus Christ the righteous; and he is the Propitiation
for our sins. (1 John 2:1-2)

Celebrant Lift up your hearts.

People We lift them up unto the Lord.
Celebrant Let us give thanks unto our Lord God.
People It is meet and right so to do.

IT is very meet, right, and our bounden duty that we should at all times, and in all places, give thanks
unto thee, O Lord, Holy Father, Almighty, Everlasting God.

THEREFORE with Angels and Archangels, and with all the company of heaven, we laud and magnify
thy glorious Name; evermore praising thee, and saying,

Sanctus Willan

Page 10
ALL glory be to thee, Almighty God, our heavenly Father, for that thou, of thy tender mercy, didst
give thine only Son Jesus Christ to suffer death upon the cross for our redemption; who made there,
by his one oblation of himself once offered, a full, perfect, and sufficient sacrifice, oblation, and
satisfaction, for the sins of the whole world; and did institute, and in his holy Gospel command us to
continue, a perpetual memory of that his precious death and sacrifice, until his coming again. For in
the night in which he was betrayed, he took Bread; and when he had given thanks, he brake it, and
gave it to his disciples, saying, Take, eat, this is my Body, which is given for you; Do this in
remembrance of me. Likewise, after supper, he took the Cup; and when he had given thanks, he gave
it to them, saying, Drink ye all of this; for this is my Blood of the New Testament, which is shed for
you, and for many, for the remission of sins; Do this, as oft as ye shall drink it, in remembrance of
me.

WHEREFORE, O Lord and heavenly Father, according to the institution of thy dearly beloved Son
our Saviour Jesus Christ, we, thy humble servants, do celebrate and make here before thy Divine
Majesty, with these thy holy gifts, which we now offer unto thee, the memorial thy Son hath
commanded us to make; having in remembrance his blessed passion and precious death, his mighty
resurrection and glorious ascension; rendering unto thee most hearty thanks for the innumerable
benefits procured unto us by the same.

AND we most humbly beseech thee, O merciful Father, to hear us; and, of thy almighty goodness,
vouchsafe to bless and sanctify, with thy Word and Holy Spirit, these thy gifts and creatures of bread
and wine; that we, receiving them according to thy Son our Savior Jesus Christ’s holy institution, in
remembrance of his death and passion, may be partakers of his most blessed Body and Blood.

AND we earnestly desire thy fatherly goodness mercifully to accept this our sacrifice of praise and
thanksgiving; most humbly beseeching thee to grant that, by the merits and death of thy Son Jesus
Christ, and through faith in his blood, we, and all thy whole Church, may obtain remission of our sins,
and all other benefits of his passion. And here we offer and present unto thee, O Lord, our selves, our
souls and bodies, to be a reasonable, holy, and living sacrifice unto thee; humbly beseeching thee that
we, and all others who shall be partakers of this Holy Communion, may worthily receive the most
precious Body and Blood of thy Son Jesus Christ, be filled with thy grace and heavenly benediction,

Page 11
and made one body with him, that he may dwell in us, and we in him. And although we are unworthy,
through our manifold sins, to offer unto thee any sacrifice; yet we beseech thee to accept this our
bounden duty and service, not weighing our merits, but pardoning our offenses, through Jesus Christ
our Lord; By whom, and with whom, in the unity of the Holy Ghost, all honour and glory be unto thee,
O Father Almighty, world without end. Amen.

And now, as our Saviour Christ hath taught us, we are bold to say,

OUR Father, who art in heaven, Hallowed be thy Name. Thy kingdom come. Thy will be done,
On earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our trespasses, As
we forgive those who trespass against us. And lead us not into temptation, But deliver us from
evil. For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, for ever and ever. Amen.

WE do not presume to come to this thy Table, O merciful Lord, trusting in our own
righteousness, but in thy manifold and great mercies. We are not worthy so much as to gather
up the crumbs under thy Table. But thou art the same Lord, whose property is always to have
mercy: Grant us therefore, gracious Lord, so to eat the flesh of thy dear Son Jesus Christ, and
to drink his blood, that our sinful bodies may be made clean by his body, and our souls washed
through his most precious blood, and that we may evermore dwell in him, and he in us. Amen.

Agnus Dei Willan

Administration of Holy Communion

It is the custom of this Church that all baptized persons who come in faith and penitence are welcome to receive the
Sacrament of Holy Communion. One may receive the wine either by intinction (dipping the wafer in the cup) or drinking
it directly from the common cup. Children and adults who do not wish to receive Communion may come for a blessing,
signifying this by crossing your arms across your chest. (Consecrated gluten-free wafers are available simply by
indicating the need for such to the priest.)

ALMIGHTY and everliving God, we most heartily thank thee, for that thou dost vouchsafe to
feed us who have duly received these holy mysteries, with the spiritual food of the most precious
Body and Blood of thy Son our Saviour Jesus Christ; and dost assure us thereby of thy favour
and goodness towards us; and that we are very members incorporate in the mystical body of
thy Son, which is the blessed company of all faithful people; and are also heirs through hope of
thy everlasting kingdom, by the merits of his most precious death and passion. And we humbly
beseech thee, O heavenly Father, so to assist us with thy grace, that we may continue in that holy
fellowship, and do all such good works as thou hast prepared for us to walk in; through Jesus
Christ our Lord, to whom with thee and the Holy Ghost, be all honour and glory, world without
end. Amen.

2020 Stewardship Pledge Cards

This is a reminder to turn in your Pledge Cards so that the Vestry can prepare the 2020
budget for St. George’s Church. Just in case your pledge card was lost, or you did not
receive one, we have more cards in Yates Hall at the Welcome Table to assist you in
making this very important commitment for the year to come.

Not only is stewardship a spiritual issue, setting in right order your personal priorities
and commitments, establishing the Godly orientation of your heart, but your generous
support of the parish makes possible all that we are able to do as a community. Please
pray about your giving to the church, and then return your pledge card with a
commitment about which you feel blessed.
Page 21
Christ the King Sunday, a Primer
Christ the King Sunday is celebrated on the last Sunday after Pentecost, before the
beginning of Advent that starts the new Church Year. As the last Sunday of the Christian
Church Year, Christ the King Sunday is the climax and conclusion of the Church’s liturgical
journey through the life of Christ and the Gospel message. Its purpose is to celebrate the
coming reign of Christ as King of the Earth and his completion of the renewed creation that
marks the fullness of the Kingdom of God. That hope is born from the entire life of Christ
and his teachings that have been celebrated in the seasons of the Church Year during the
past twelve months. In celebrating the Reign of Christ the King, this Sunday also provides
an appropriate bridge to the new Church Year that begins the following Sunday on the first
Sunday of Advent with an emphasis on hope and expectation, the longing for the coming
of the Kingdom of God amid the darkness of a sinful world.

As such a bridge between the completed year and the beginning of a new year, Christ the
King services often use Scripture and song to provide both a retrospective and introductory
overview of the journey through the life of Christ and the Gospel message that the Seasons
of the Church Year provides. This offers not only an opportunity for a worshipful reflection
on the significance of the life of Christ, it also presents opportunity to remind people of the
meaning of the various seasons of the Church Year.
