Session Title: Empowering Students to Lead with Technology

Session Abstract:
Have you ever wondered how empowering student technology leaders to provide digital
citizenship, device troubleshooting, and peer technology trainings can effectively support a
school’s 1:1 device initiative? Come and learn how a high school media specialist continues to
empower and nurture her students to become future technology leaders.

Session Details:
 (5 mins) – The media specialist will start the session by introducing the panel of student
leaders to the session participants and an overview of what will be discussed in this session.

 (10 mins) – Discuss the importance of student empowerment with these potential questions –
What is a student technology team? Why does a school need a student technology team to
best support the school’s 1:1 device initiative? How should the student technology team be
selected? What is a student technology team expected to do for the school and its peers?

 (15 mins) – Discuss how the student technology team demonstrates its leadership and adds
value to the school in terms of (but not limited to) digital citizenship, device troubleshooting,
and peer technology training with these potential questions – How does the school reinforce
digital citizenship? When does the student technology team provide assistance and interact
with its peers? What are the responsibilities of a student technology team in terms of device
troubleshooting? What type of trainings the student technology team provides to its peers?
How does the student technology team contribute their expertise to benefit the school
community using the genius hour concept (i.e., Hackathon, Makerspace, 3D printing, Hour of
Codes, and Sphero etc.)?

 (15 mins) – The media specialist will discuss how she uses Slack, Microsoft Teams, and
Sway to interact with her student technology team. The media specialist will also share how
she empowers and nurtures her students to become future technology leaders through a series
of Microsoft training for skill advancement and technology awareness.

 (10 mins) – The media specialist will conclude the session by facilitating a Q&A discussion
so that all the participants can have the opportunities to dive deeper into the conversation and
possibly share their student technology team experience.
