Although similar, project based learning and problem based learning have some differences.

Both use hands on active learning techniques to get students involved. Project based learning
however, takes a long term task for the student to create and present that incorporates hands
on learning techniques while incorporating other subject standards at times. Problem based
learning takes a specific problem that can be solved much quicker while challenging students to
find many ways to solve the problem.
I have decided to create a project based learning activity for the kindergarten level where the
scholars will create their very own time machine to take the class back in time to a specific time
period. This project will first have the students create their own time machine using cardboard to
cut into shapes. They will then identify a certain time period or holiday celebrated from that time
and describe different everyday activities such as food prepared and physical activities done
then.

Math Standards: K.G Analyze, compare, create, and compose shapes


CCSS.MATH.CONTENT.K.G.B.4​. Analyze and compare two- and three-dimensional shapes, in
different sizes and orientations, using informal language to describe their similarities,
differences, parts (e.g., number of sides and vertices/“corners”) and other attributes (e.g.,
having sides of equal length).
CCSS.MATH.CONTENT.K.G.B.​5. Model shapes in the world by building shapes from
components (e.g., sticks and clay balls) and drawing shapes.

Scholars will use cardboard, scissors, tape, and glue to cut and create different shapes to put
together to create their own time machine. Rectangles and squares can be used to create a 3
dimensional rectangular prism needed for the machine. Other 2 dimensional shapes can be
used to place on the machine as buttons or decor.

Social Science Standards: K.6 Students understand that history relates to events, people, and
places of other times.
1. Identify the purposes of, and the people and events honored in, commemorative holidays,
including the human struggles that were the basis for the events (e.g., Thanksgiving,
Independence Day, Washington’s and Lincoln’s Birthdays, Martin Luther King Jr. Day, Memorial
Day, Labor Day, Columbus Day, Veterans Day).
2. Know the triumphs in American legends and historical accounts through the stories of such
people as Pocahontas, George Washington, Booker T. Washington, Daniel Boone, and
Benjamin Franklin.
3. Understand how people lived in earlier times and how their lives would be different today
(e.g., getting water from a well, growing food, making clothing, having fun, forming
organizations, living by rules and laws).

Scholars will be able to identify which time period they have chosen by relating it to events,
holidays, or people. They can discuss the items they used such as types of food/water or things
they did to pass the time.
Physical Education Standards: 4. Students demonstrate knowledge of physical fitness concepts,
principles, and strategies to improve health and performance.

Fitness Concepts
4.1 Identify physical activities that are enjoyable and challenging.
4.2 Describe the role of water as an essential nutrient for the body.
4.3 Explain that nutritious food provides energy for physical activity.

Scholars will identify different activities from the time period they have chosen such as physical
activities like sports or outdoor games. They will talk about how their food and drinks helped
them get through trying times and heath wise.
