The Colour Monster is feeling confused because he is experiencing multiple emotions at once, appearing as a mix of yellow, blue, red, black, and green. To help him, the narrator separates each of the Colour Monster's feelings - happiness, sadness, anger, fear, and calmness - into differently colored jars so they can examine each emotion individually. They then identify the color and characteristics of each feeling to help the Colour Monster better understand his emotional state.

This is my friend, the Colour monster. Today, he is very confused and he
doesn’t know why. His emotions are all over the place: he feels angry, happy, sad, calm and scared. He’s yellow, blue, red, black and green, all at once! Can we help him? I know what we can do! We can put each feeling in a different jar, so we can look at it more closely. (Takes a yellow jar) This is HAPPINESS. It shines yellow like the sun. You laugh, jump and dance! (Takes a blue jar) This is SADNESS. It’s gentle like a blue rainy day. Sadness can make you cry. But if you’re sad, I’ll hold your hand. (Takes a red jar) This is ANGER. It’s red like the fire. Anger can make you want to stamp and roar like a lion. (Takes a black jar) This is FEAR. It’s black like the night. Being scared can make you feel very small. But if you are scared, tell me why. (Takes a green jar) This is CALM. It’s quiet like the trees. Now you’re calm. You breathe slowly and deeply. AHHH, you feel at peace. There! We’ve finished. There are your feelings, and each one has a different colour. Let’s say them together: YELLOW-HAPPINES; BLUE-SADNESS; RED- ANGER; BLACK-FEAR and GREEN-CALM.
