Aptitude Solved Problems

1. Suresh borrowed some money at the rate of 6% p.a. for the first two years, at the rate of 9% p.a.
for the next three years, and at the rate of 14% p.a. for the rest of the period. If he pays a total
interest of Rs. 11,400 at the end of nine years, how much money did he borrow?
Answer: Rs. 12000
Explanation:
Let the sum borrowed be x.
Simple Interest = ( Principal * Rate * Time ) / 100
[( x * 6 * 2 ) / 100 ] + [( x * 9 * 3 ) / 100 ] + [( x * 14 * 4 ) / 100 ] = 11400
( 3x / 25 ) + ( 27x / 100 ) + ( 14x / 25 ) = 11400
( 12x + 27x + 56x ) / 100 = 11400
( 95x / 100 ) = 11400
95x = 1140000
x = 1140000 / 95
x = Rs. 12000
Borrowed Amount = Rs. 12000

2. Two pipes A and B together can fill a cistern in 4 hours. Had they been opened separately, then B
would have taken 6 hours more than A to fill the cistern. How much time will be taken by A to fill
the cistern separately?
Answer: 6 hrs
Explanation:
Let the cistern be filled by pipe A alone in x hours.
Then, pipe B will fill it in ( x + 6 ) hours.
( 1 / x ) + [ 1 / ( x + 6 )] = ( 1 / 4 )
( x + 6 + x ) / [ x ( x + 6 )] = ( 1 / 4 )
⇒ 4 ( x + 6 + x ) = [ x ( x + 6 )]
⇒ 4x + 24 + 4x = x2 + 6x
⇒ 8x + 24 = x2 + 6x
⇒ x2 + 6x - 8x - 24 = 0
⇒ x2 - 2x - 24 = 0
⇒ (x - 6)(x + 4) = 0
∴ x = 6 (neglecting the negative value of x)
Time taken by A to fill the cistern separately = 6 hours

3. The sum of the present ages of a father and his son is 60 years. Six years ago, fathers age was
five times the age of the son. After 6 years, son age will be ?
Answer: 20 years
Explanation:
Let the present ages of son and father be x and (60 - x) years respectively.
Then, (60 - x) - 6 = 5 (x - 6)
⇒ 54 - x = 5x - 30
⇒ 6x = 84
⇒ x = 84 / 6
⇒ x = 14
∴ Son′s age after 6 years = ( x + 6 )
= ( 14 + 6 ) years
= 20 years
1
Son′s age = 20 years

4. Aniesh sell a bicycle to Baskar at a profit of 20%. Baskar sell it to Chandru at profit of 25%. If
Chandru pays Rs. 225 , find the cost price of bicycle ?
Answer: Rs. 150
Explanation:
Let the Cost Price be x.
x * ( 120 / 100 ) * ( 125 / 100 ) = 225
x * ( 6 / 5 ) * ( 5 / 4 ) = 225
x * 6 * ( 1 / 4 ) = 225
x * ( 3 / 2 ) = 225
x = 225 * ( 2 / 3 )
x = 75 * 2
x = 150
∴ Cost Price = Rs. 150

5. Vignesh bought 10 toys for Rs. 40 and sold them 8 toys for Rs. 35. Find his gain or loss percent ?
Answer: 9.375 %
Explanation
Cost Price of 10 toys = Rs. 40
Cost Price of 1 toy = Rs. ( 40 / 10 )
= Rs. 4
Selling price of 8 toys = Rs. 35
Selling Price of 1 toy = Rs. ( 35 / 8 )
∴ Gain = Selling Price - Cost Price
= ( 35 / 8 ) - 4
= ( 35 - 32 ) / 8
=(3/8)
Gain Percentage = ( Gain * 100 ) / Cost Price
= (( 3 / 8 ) * 100 ) / 4
= ( 300 / 8 ) / 4
= ( 300 / 32 )
= 9.375 %

6. A shopkeeper allows a discount of 10% on the marked price and still gains 17% on the whole.
Find at what percent above the cost price did he mark his goods ?
Answer: 30 %
Explanation:
Let the Cost Price be 100 and the marked price be x.
Selling Price = ( 100 + 17 )
= 117
( 100 - 10 )% of x = 117
90% of x = 117
90x / 100 = 117
x = 117 * ( 100 / 90 )
x = ( 11700 / 90 )
x = 130
∴ The Marked Price of goods is 30 % above the cost price.

7. If the cost price is 25% of selling price. Then what is the profit percent ?
Answer: 300 %
2
Explanation:
Let the Selling Price be 100.
Cost Price = 25
Profit = Selling Price - Cost Price
= ( 100 - 25 )
= 75
Profit % = ( Profit * 100 ) / Cost Price
= ( 75 * 100 ) / 25
= 3 * 100
= 300 %

8. The total age of A and B is 12 years more than the total age B and C. C is how many years
younger than A ?

Let Kavitha′s age be 2x and Vanitha′s age be 5x.
( 2x + 8 ) / ( 5x + 8 ) = ( 1 / 2 )
2 ( 2x + 8 ) = ( 5x + 8 )
4x + 16 = 5x + 8
5x - 4x = 16 - 8
x=8
Kavitha′s age = 2x
= 16 years
Vanitha′s age = 5x
= 40 years
Difference of their ages = ( 40 - 16 )

From the given data,
Ten years ago, A = ( B / 2 )
( 3x - 10 ) = ( 1 / 2 )( 4x - 10 )
2 ( 3x - 10 ) = ( 4x - 10 )
6x - 20 = 4x - 10
6x - 4x = 20 - 10
2x = 10
x=5
3
Sum of their present ages = 7x
= 35

11. What would be the compound interest on an amount of Rs. 5500 at the rate of 5 p.c.p.a. after 2
years?
Answer: Rs. 563.75

travelling on parallel tracks in the opposite direction then how long will the slower train takes to
cross the faster train?
Answer: 48 sec
Explanation:
Length of the two trains are 0.55 km and 0.45 km
Speeds of the two trains are 30 km/hr and 45 km/hr
Trains are moving in the opposite direction.
Relative Distance = ( 0.55 + 0.45 ) km
= 1 km
= 1000 m
Relative speed = ( 30 + 45 ) hr
= 75 hr
= ( 75 * ( 5 / 18 )) m/sec
= ( 375 / 18 ) m/sec
Time = Distance / Speed
= 1000 * (18 / 375) sec

fill the tank in the same time during which the tank is filled by the third pipe alone. The second pipe
fills the tank 5 hours faster than the first pipe and 4 hours slower than the third pipe. The time
required by the first pipe is ?
Answer: 15
Explanation:
Let the first pipe alone takes x hours to fill the tank .
Then second and third pipes will take ( x -5 ) and ( x - 9 ) hours respectively to fill the tank.
⇒ ( 1 / x ) + [ 1 / ( x - 5 )] = 1 / ( x - 9 )
⇒( x - 5 + x ) / x ( x - 5 ) = 1 / ( x - 9 )
⇒ ( 2x - 5 ) ( x - 9 ) = x ( x - 5 )
⇒ 2x2 - 18x - 5x + 45 = x2 - 5x
5
⇒ 2x2 -23x + 45 = x2 - 5x
⇒ 2x2 -23x + 45 - x2 + 5x = 0
⇒ x2 - 18x + 45 = 0
⇒ (x - 15)( x - 3) = 0
⇒ x = 15 [neglecting x = 3]
⇒ x = 15

17. A student attempts x number of questions. He answers 15 correctly out of first 20 questions and
of the remaining questions, he answers 1/3 correctly. If all questions have same credit and the
student gets 50 % marks, then find the value of x ?
Answer: 50
Explanation:
Student attempts x questions.
Out of 20 questions he answers 15 correctly and of (x - 20) questions he answered 1/3 correctly.
The student gets 50 % marks.
∴ 15 + (1 / 3)(x - 20) = 50 % of x
15 + (1 / 3)(x - 20) = (50 / 100) * x
15 + (1 / 3)(x - 20) = x / 2
(45 + (x - 20)) / 3 = x / 2
90 + 2 (x - 20)=3x
90 + 2x - 40 = 3x
50 + 2x = 3x
x = 50
The number of question attempted by the student = 50

Sum = ( Present Worth + True Discount )
= Rs. ( 600 + 168 )
= Rs. 768
Sum = Rs. 768

25. The distance between two points is 36km. A boat rows in still water at 6kmph, it takes 8hr less
to cover dist in downstream in comparison to that in upstream. Find the rate of stream?
Answer: 3 kmph
Explanation:
Let x be the rate of stream.
Time = Distance / Speed
Difference between time taken to cover upstream and downstream is 8hr
( 36 / ( 6 - x )) - ( 36 / ( 6 + x )) = 8
36 ( 6 + x ) - 36 ( 6 - x ) = 8 ( 36 - x2)
36 ( 6 + x - 6 + x ) = 8 ( 36 - x2)
9x = 36 - x2
x2 + 9x - 36 = 0
(x + 12)(x - 3) = 0
Speed cannot be negative. So, x = 3 kmph
Rate of stream = 3 kmph

The weight of Q, R = 43 * 2
= 86 Kg
To get the Weight of Q,
( P + Q ) + ( Q + R ) - ( P + Q + R ) = 80 + 86 - 135
P + Q + Q + R - P - Q - R = 166 - 135
Q = 31 kg

33. The true discount on a bill due 9 months hence at 12% per annum is Rs.540. Find the amount of
the bill and its present worth ?
Answer: Rs. 6000
Explanation:
Let amount be Rs.x.
True Discount = Rs. 540
Time = ( 9 / 12 ) years
= (3 / 4 ) years
Rate = 12 %
True Discount = ( Amount * Rate * Time ) / [100 + ( Rate * Time )]
540 = ( x * 12 * (3 / 4)) / [100 + (12 * (3 / 4))]
10
540 = 9x / 109
x = 540 * (109 / 9)
x = 58860 / 9
x = Rs. 6540
Amount = Rs. 6540
Present Worth = (Amount - True Discount)
= Rs.(6540 - 540)
= Rs. 6000

34. P can complete a work in 12 days working 8 hours a day. Q can complete the same work in 8
days working 10 hours a day. If both P and Q work together, working 8 hours a day, in how many
days can they complete the work?
Answer: 5 (5 / 11) days
Explanation:
P can complete the work in ( 12 * 8 ) hrs = 96 hrs
Q can complete the work in ( 8 * 10 ) hrs = 80 hrs
P′s 1 hour′s work = ( 1 / 96 )
Q′s 1 hour′s work = ( 1 / 80 )
( P + Q )′s 1 hour′s work =( 1 / 96 ) + ( 1 / 80 )
= ( 5 + 6 ) / 480
= 11 / 480
So, both P and Q will finish the work in ( 480 / 11 ) hrs.
So, Number of days of 8 hours each = ( 480 / 11 ) * ( 1 / 8 )
= 60 / 11 days
= 5 (5 / 11) days
No of days = 5 (5 / 11) days

35. The true discount on Rs. 1760 due after a certain time at 12% per annum is Rs. 160. The time
after which it is due is ?

36. An article sold at a loss of 10%. Its Cost Price is Rs. 800. A discount of 20% was offered on the
labeled price while selling. What is the loss% at the labeled price?
Answer: 20 %
Explanation:
Selling Price = (( 100 - loss% ) / 100 ) * Cost Price
= ( 100 - 10 ) / ( 100 * 800 )
= ( 90 / 100 ) * 800
= ( 90 * 8 )
= Rs. 720
Cost Price = ( 100 / ( 100 - Loss% )) * Selling Price
11
= ( 100 / ( 100 - 20 )) * 720
= ( 100 / 80 ) * 720
= 100 * 9
= Rs.900
Loss = Cost Price - Selling Price
= ( 900 - 720 )
= Rs. 180
Loss % = ( Loss * 100 ) / Cost Price
= ( 180 * 100 ) / 900
= 180 / 9
= 20
Loss % = 20 %

37. A sum of money amounts to Rs. 10560 after 4 years and Rs. 11840 after 6 years at the same rate
of simple interest.The rate of interest per annum is ?
Answer: 8 %
Explanation:
Simple interest for 2 years = Rs. ( 11840 - 10560 )
= Rs. 1280
Simple interest for 4 years = Rs. ( 1280 * 2 )
= Rs. 2560
Principal = Rs. ( 10560 - 2560 )
= Rs. 8000
Rate = ( 100 * Simple Interest ) / ( Principal * Time )
Rate of interest = ( 100 * 2560 ) / ( 8000 * 4 )
= ( 256 / 32 )
=8%

38. A work can be finished in 16 days by twenty women. The same work can be finished in fifteen
days by sixteen men. The ratio between the capacity of a man and a woman is ?
Answer: 4 : 3
Explanation:
Work done by 20 women in 1 day = ( 1 / 16 )
Work done by 1 woman in 1 day = 1 / ( 16 * 20 )
Work done by 16 men in 1 day = ( 1 / 15 )
Work done by 1 man in 1 day = 1 / ( 15 * 16 )
Ratio of the capacity of a man and woman = [ 1 / ( 15 * 16 )] : [ 1 / ( 16 * 20 )]
= ( 1 / 15 ) : ( 1 / 20 )
=(1/3):(1/4)
=4:3

39. The proportion between the current ages of A and B is 6 : 7. If B is 4 years elder than A, what
will be the proportion of the ages of A and B after 4 years ?
Answer: 7 : 8
Explanation:
If A′s age and B′s age be 6x and 7x years respectively.
Then B is 4 years elder than A
7x - 6x = 4
x=4
After 4 years, A′s age = 6x + 4 years
B′s age = 7x + 4
Ratio = ( 6x + 4 ) : ( 7x + 4 )
12
Substituting the value of x,
= 28 : 32
=7:8

40. The interest on Rs. 750 for 2 years is the same as the true discount on Rs. 960 due 2 years
hence. If the rate of interest is the same in both cases, it is ?
Answer: 14 %
Explanation:
Simple Interest. on Rs. 750 = True Discount. on Rs. 960
This means Present Worth of Rs. 960 due 2 years hence is Rs. 750.
True Discount = ( Amount - Present Worth )
= Rs. (960 - 750)
= Rs. 210
Simple Interest on Rs. 750 for 2 years is Rs. 210
Rate = ( 100 * Simple Interest ) / ( Principal * Time )
Rate = (100 * 210 )/ (750 * 2 ) %
= ( 21000 / 1500 )
= 14 %

41. To fill a tank, 25 buckets of water is required. How many buckets of water will be required to
fill the same tank if the capacity of the bucket is reduced to two fifth of its present?
Answer: 62.5 buckets
Explanation:
Let x buckets of water be required, if the capacity of the bucket is reduced to two fifth.
More buckets, less capacity ( ∴ Indirect proportion )
Capacity = 1 : ( 2 / 5 ) :: x : 25
⇒ 1 * 25 = ( 2 / 5 ) * x
⇒ 25 = 2x / 5
2x = ( 25 * 5 )
x = 125 / 2
x = 62.5
∴ Number of buckets required to fill the tank = 62.5 buckets

42. A, B and C started a business in which A invested Rs.2000 for 1 year, B invested Rs.3000 for 1(
1 / 2 ) years, C invested Rs.4000 for 2 years. At the end of the profit received by them is Rs.14500.
What is C share?
Answer: Rs. 8000
Explanation:
Investment of A = Rs.20000 per 12 months
Investment of B = Rs.30000 per 18 months
Investment of C = Rs.40000 per 24 months
= ( 20000 * 12 ): ( 30000 * 18 ) : ( 40000 * 24 )
= 240000 : 540000 : 960000
= 24 : 54 : 96
= 4 : 9 : 16
Total = 29 parts
1 part = 14500 / 29
= Rs.500
C share = 16 parts
= 500 * 16
= Rs. 8000

Answer: 15 %
Explanation:
Loss = Cost Price - Selling Price
= Rs. ( 840 - 714 )
Loss = Rs. 126
Loss % = ( Loss / Cost Price ) * 100
= ( 126 / 840 ) * 100
= 12600 / 840
= 1260 / 84
∴ Loss % = 15 %
Loss % = 15 %

46. The true discount on a bill due 9 months hence at 16% per annum is Rs. 189. Find the amount
of the bill ?
Answer: Rs. 1764
Explanation:
Let Present Worth be Rs. x.
Then, Simple Interest on Rs. x at 16% for 9 months = Rs. 189
Simple Interest = ( Principal * Time * Rate ) / 100
x * 16 * ( 9 / 12 ) * ( 1 / 100 ) = 189
x * 4 * 3 ) / 100 = 189
( 12x / 100) = 189
x = ( 189 * 100 ) / 12
x = ( 18900 / 12 )
x = 1575

47. B and C are equally efficient, but the efficiency of A is half of each B and C. A and B started a
work and 3 days later C joined them. If A alone can do the work in 14 days, then in how many more
days the work will be completed?
Answer: 1 day
Explanation:
Number of days taken by A to complete work alone = 14 days
Number of days taken by B to complete work alone = 7 days
Number of days taken by C to complete work alone = 7 days
One day′s work of A and B = ( 1 / 14 ) + ( 1 / 7 )
= 3 / 14
And one day′s work of A, B and C = ( 1 / 14 ) + ( 1 / 7 )+ ( 1 / 7 )
= 5 / 14
3 day′s work of A and B = 3 * ( 3 / 14 )
= 9 / 14
Remaining work = ( 1 - ( 9 / 14))
= ( 5 / 14 )
This remaining work will be done by A, B and C = ( 5 / 14 ) / ( 5 / 14 )
= 1 day
The work will be completed in 1 day.
