The dimension of editing and visual effects world is huge. Students should be aware

and should be capable enough to think a bigger picture and also invest their time, efforts, skill

and concern towards this type of film making and editing genre. This type of films are known

as sci-fiction, which are indeed fiction in nature but also includes a touch of science, scientific

technologies and visuals that are not possible in the real world. This effort to create such piece

of art is to increase awareness in students and motivate the upcoming students to invest their

selves in making such types of films as well, even if it is on their basic level.

Introduction

Filmmaking is the process of making a writing, compiling, producing a film. Film is a motion
picture. Direction or production of films for cinema or television. This is a visual story.
Filmmaking involves screening, casting, shooting, sound recording and reproduction, editing,
and several discrete stages through the film's release and exhibition to demonstrate the finished
product to the audience. A film has several genres and types which are more than 90 but the
major genres mainly include Action, Adventure, Comedy, Crime/Gangster, Drama,
Epics/Historical, Horror, Musicals/Dance, Sci-Fi, War, Westerns. The film “Meri Jadui
Haqeeqat” is film based on visual effects, revolving around the world of editing and vfx and
lies in the genre of Sci-fiction & drama. Filmmaking takes place in several places round the
world in a very vary of economic, social, and political contexts, and employing a type of
technologies and medium techniques. Typically, it involves an oversized range of individuals,
and may take from a number of months to many years to finish. A movie maker is one who
takes the burden of a feature film from beginning to finish, and most typically fulfils both role
of producer and director (and more).

There are five stages of film making and film producing:

 Development,
 Pre-production,
 Production,
 Post-production,
 Distribution.

The first stage during which the ideas for the film are created, rights to books/plays are bought
etc., and therefore the script is written. Funding for the project needs to be sought-after and
inexperienced lit. Preparations are created for the shoot, during which cast and film crew are
employed, locations are hand-picked and sets are designed. The raw components for the film
are recorded throughout the film shoot. The images, sound, and visual effects of the recorded
film are altered and edited. The finished film is distributed and screened in cinemas and sold
to home video.

History

The history of the film dates far back to the theater and dance of ancient Greece, which
had many similar elements in today's film world. But the technological development in
the film has been rapid in the last 100 years. Beginning in the Victorian era, many
RESEARCH REPORT FILM BY WADEED BAIG 6

camera devices, projectors, and film shapes have been developed and mastered,
forming the film industry that we know today.

Greek plays performed in ancient amphitheaters and carnivals to five-cent machines,

flashing images that created the illusion of a modern dance to our modern technology
and special effects, the film's history is a long one. Success Story. It has rich history of
art.

The daguerreotype, created in 1839 by French painter Louis-Jacques-Mande

Daguerre, was the primary commercially made photographic method. It worked by
capturing still pictures on silvered copper plates. However before the daguerreotype, as
early as 470 BCE, there was the camera obscura. it had been a primitive contraption
wherever a box with a hole in one crossing side allowed light rays to travel, striking a
surface within that created an upside down coloured image. All these inventions were
tricking the attention into trusting that stills were moving. a real moving picture
required to possess split-second footage on thin transparent film. Etienne-Jules Marey
created the chronophotographic gun in 1882, that took twelve frames per second on
constant image. This was an enormous step for cinema and a landmark within the
history of film. Charles Francis Jenkins created the primary movie projector, known
as the phantoscope, within the early 90 ninetees. The Lumiere brothers in France
created the cinematographe round the same time, that was a transportable, hand-held
projector. The word cinema was born from this invention and therefore the brothers
showed 10 short films on their projector within the world’s 1st house, the Salon Indien.

For thirty years, the silent era reigned till 1923. till then narration and dialogue were
given. In 1903, the ten-minute-long “The great Train robbery,” was shown, and it had
been the primary Western narrative with a plot. Previously, films were simply actions
of mundane things sort of a short dance, a greeting or a kiss. n the Twenties, film stars
were being created, their face recognized and praised. additionally within the Twenties,
sound created its appearance in “The Jazz Singer,” that used the vitaphone system.
“Talkies” were the films of up coming near future and sound-on-film strategies were
developed as well as the movietone, phonofilm and photophone. With the
introduction of sound, the Golden Age had begun. The mid 70s saw a revival of traits
of the Golden Age films. known as the “post-classical” era, films from this decade
were characterised by shady protagonists, endings with a twist and flashbacks. Adult
cinemas too begin make root. They died out in the 80s once the vcr allowed home

viewing. The early 90s saw the success of freelance films, like “Pulp Fiction.” special
effectss films wowed audiences. DVDs replaced VCRs for home viewing media. In the
early 21st century, documentary films and 3D films became wide famous. IMAX
technology additionally has been more and more used. currently we tend to like
watching movies in many various forms, like on the pc or on a mobile. With the
inventions of internet streaming, handheld, transportable cameras and file sharing,
copyrights of films are at risks.

Problem Statement

Every story has different acts which define the beginning, conflict and climax of a

movie. Without these, a film is not complete, a viewer must be able to distinguish between

these and come to conclusion in order to understand the film. Act 1 of this film includes Shan

to be part of a problem that he cannot get rid of on his own, he tries his best but nothing happens,

he believes in super natural powers to solve his problems. Then Act 2 takes places when Shan

has received those powers but forgets his inner self and starts to abuse the power and loses it.

Then act 3 starts when he has to go find his way to get his powers back in order to defeat the

antagonist. This cycle repeats until he reaches his desired situation and climax happens. This

whole story consists of magic, magical powers and magical world that Shan has in his

imaginations which he thinks is the cure of all his problem. So this story tells how an individual

believes in outer circumstances to affect their destiny, while they do not look inside their selves

and do not try to become better.

Objective

The sole objective of this film and this research report is to educate and motivate the

reader and viewer especially film making students that there are more genres to discover

rather than revolving around few selected genres i.e. romance, comedy etc. Filming is not just

about grabbing frames or taking some good shots, it is about showing the expressions and

feelings of emotions in that particular scene. And excluding the previously mentioned genres
RESEARCH REPORT FILM BY WADEED BAIG 8

there are greater genres that can be touched and be filmed about. Most students are seen

picking up the mentioned topics but not many go out the box to make something bigger,

crazier. Let’s take few more genres for instance. Genres of Sci-Fi, suspense, mystery, action,

and these genres also possess great potential, it is left there to be discovered by new students

and be experimented upon, in order to create something new, something extra ordinary.

MY FILM

Historical background

Science fiction, abbreviation SF or sci-fi, a style of fiction that deals primarily with the

impact of actual or imaginary science upon society or people. The term sci fi was popularized,

if not created, within the 20th century by one among the genre’s principal advocates, the

american publisher Hugo Gernsback. The Hugo Awards, given annually since 1953 by world's

sci fi Society, are named on him. These accomplishment awards are given to the highest SF

writers, editors, illustrators, films, and fanzines.

Science fiction could be a trendy genre. although writers in antiquity typically forbidden

themes common to latest sci fi, their stories created no try at scientific and technological

believability, the feature that distinguishes sci fi from earlier speculative writings and different

modern speculative genres like fantasy and horror. The genre formally emerged within the West,

wherever the social transformations formed by the commercial Revolution 1st led writers and

intellectuals to extrapolate future's impact of technology. By the start of the twentieth century,

a array of normal sci fi “sets” had developed around cool themes, among them outer space,

robots, alien beings, and time travel (see below Major fantasy themes). The customary

“theatrics” of sci fi also predict warnings, utopian aspirations, elaborate situations for entirely

unreal worlds, titanic film disasters, strange voyages, and political agitation of the many

extremist flavours, given within the style of sermons, meditations, satires, allegories, and
RESEARCH REPORT FILM BY WADEED BAIG 9

parodies—exhibiting each conceivable angle toward the method of techno-social modification,

from misanthropical despair to cosmic blissfulness.

Science fiction writers usually hunt down new scientific and technical developments so

as to prognosticate freely the techno-social changes that may shock the readers’ sense of

cultural behavior and expand their consciousness. This approach was central to the work of

H.G. Wells, a founding father of the genre and also its greatest author. Wells was a dedicated

student of the 19th-century British man of science T.H. Huxley, whose blatant championing of

Charles Darwin’s theory of evolution earned him the epithet “Darwin’s Bulldog.” Wells’s

literary career provides ample proof of science fiction’s latent political theory, its affinity for

aggressive humor and utopian political agendas, in addition as its dire predictions of

technological destruction.

When the genre began to gel within the early twentieth century, it had been usually

unrespectable, notably within the america, wherever it 1st catered to a juvenile audience.

Following war II, sci fi unfold throughout the globe from its geographical point within the

america, spurred on by ever a lot of staggering scientific feats, from creation of energy and

atomic bombs to the arrival of voyage, human visits to the Moon, so real chance of clonning

human life.

By the twenty first century, sci fi had become far more than a genre. Its avid followers

and practitioners established a thriving worldwide culture. Fans relished the apparently endless

kind of SF-related product and pastimes, as well as books, movies, tv shows, pc games,

magazines, paintings, comics, and, more and more, collectible figurines, Web sites, DVDs, and

toy weapnons. they often control well-attended, well-organized conventions, at that costumes

were worn, handicrafts sold-out, and folks songs sung.

Inspiration

Every filmmaker has an inspiration to start their film career of. For me there are

several, including sci fi directors and non sci fi directors. As world is progressing forwards,

more and more science fiction movies are being created with the help of computer generated

graphics, it is very easy to create a fake situation look so real than the original through a

computer software. In the race of avengers, avatars, harry potters, and other CGI , VFX films,

my top motivations include: Tim Burke, VFX director of Harry Potter Films, Christian Manz,

VFX director of Fantastic Beasts and where to find them, Russo Brothers, the directors of

Avengers, David Yates, the director of prominent movies of Harry Potter franchise, Christopher

Nolan, director of batman dark knight, inception and other mind boggling movies. These

directors have something in the back of their mind and something in their work that makes

them different from others. If we look at the films created by these directors we clearly see that

how beautifully all the knots in the story of films are connected together to one ending point,

and how amazingly they have created the suspense throughout the film until the end of the film.

The next big important thing to their work is the use of CGI technology and VFX. These films

i.e Avengers, Harry Potter, Inception, Interstellar, Dark Knight etc, they all contain breath

taking visuals and impressive computer graphics that make even dragons look real. This is the

skill and experience of a director who knows what the final picture is going to look like.

Tim Burke

“Tim Burke spent the last ten years immersed in the magical world of Harry Potter, a
world that could not have been created without visual effects. He was visual effects supervisor
at Mill Film for the second film, Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets, and has been the
visual effects supervisor on each film since in the series of eight, receiving an Oscar nomination
as co-visual effects supervisor for the third, Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban. Burke
led the efforts for the final four, receiving another Oscar nomination as senior visual effects

supervisor for last year’s Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 1. Before Potter, Burke
began his career as a digital effects compositor at Mill Film, becoming a visual effects
supervisor with the 2000 film Gladiator, for which he won an Oscar for best visual effects. In
addition, he received a BAFTA nomination for that film, and five additional BAFTAs for the
Harry Potter films. Burke shares his fourth Oscar nomination, for Harry Potter and the Deathly
Hallows: Part II, with Double Negative visual effects supervisor David Vickery, Moving Picture
Company (MPC) visual effects supervisor Greg Butler, and special effects supervisor John
Richardson. Directed by David Yates, this last film in the Harry Potter series is arguably the
best reviewed and has become the third-highest grossing film of all time worldwide, edging out
this year’s Transformers: Dark of the Moon, now in fourth place. On February 12, Burke,
Vickery, Butler, and Richardson won the BAFTA award for Best Special Visual Effects.”

Prime focus

The prime focus of this film is to highlight the editing techniques that are being used

around the modern world through computer technology. These editing techniques include

CGI (Computer Generated Imagery) , VFX (Visual Effects), Motion Graphics , Transitions,

and multi software processing. This film “Meri Jadui Haqeeqat” includes visual effects and

visual elements that are inspired by the work of Christian Manz & Tim Burke specifically.

Editing style and VFX history

From the very early period of time of man’s creation it looks he has been fascinated

by things around him. Early cave paintings show the terribly 1st inventive expression of

man’s want to represent this world, showing not solely the newly style of creation however

the living qualities of movement in motion as well. This variety has been developed and

distributed over the centuries till the creation of the picture trade till late 1800’s. the 1st ever

effect or ‘Illusion’ as they were legendary then, was created in 1895 by Alfred Clark within

the Execution of maryy Queen of Scots.

Around the end of the century, the French magician patron saint Méliès launched his

1st film Indian Rubber Head (1901) brought his own style of magic to the large screen. the
RESEARCH REPORT FILM BY WADEED BAIG 12

subsequent year he launched film named a trip to the Moon (1902) and also the danccing

Midget (1902), taking virtually each form of VFX trick used these days.

Effects continued to become additional elaborate throughout succeeding twenty years,

through individuals like Robert W. Paul and Edwin S. Porter. The technique of exploitation

Mattes to composite many pictures onto one negative was utilized in such films namely the

great Train robbery (1903) and the motorist (1906).

By the middle 1920’s things began to alter. Willis O’Brian’s Stop Motion hit theaters

in 1925 within the style of The Lost World, whereas a year later Fritz Lang’s Metropolis

(1926) took the VFX industry trade by storm. The Schüfftan method artfully utilized in

Metropolis and different movies, utilized forced perspective techniques to form the illusion of

size and distance. Such techniques are still common these days, being employed in such films

as Mighty Joe Young and Armageddon (1998).

Alongside this, MGM developed the Composite Reduction method giving chance to

older photographed footage to be inserted into specific areas of another frame, as used in

Hunchback of Notre Dame (1923), The Ten Commandments (1923) and Ben-Hur (1926).

The effects vfx inddustry continued to grow through the 1930’s with such films as

King Kong (1933) and Gone with the Wind (1939). In 1934 Walt Disney’s Snow White

arrived giving rise to a brand new era of full-length animated films.

The post-war years of the 1950’s stirred the main target of film to outside of space,

and with creation of the Motion control Rig by paramount, a lot of refined shots were

developed. in the meantime the SAGE Machine (Semi-Automatic Ground Environment) was

created to follow enemy fighter planes throughout the cold war. This provided the primary

interactive camera work. a number of the outstanding effects films of the 50’s includes

Destination Moon (1950), War of the Worlds (1953) and forbidden Planet (1956). The Blue

Screen technique was too created, enabling an individual or object to be recorded against a
RESEARCH REPORT FILM BY WADEED BAIG 13

blue, green, or typically red background, then extracted and composited against a special

background.

There was very little technical development in initial 1960’s. Ray Harryhausen’s

jason and also the Argonauts (1963) came out including the famous Stop-Motion ‘skeleton

battle sequence’ that continues to be impact filmmakers these days (e.g. the mummy (1999)).

1963 saw the primary academy award given for Best Visual Effects, won by Hitchcocks’s

The Birds. Then in 1968 Stanley Kubrick’s 2001: an area Odyssey (Oscar winner), began to

push the boundaries of tricks yet again. Although the FX business had not stirred forward

enormously till the late 60’s, the pc graphics business had created headway. Ivan Sutherland

had created the Sketchpad interactive graphics software system in 1962 and also the

University of Utah had opened the primary CG department in 1966. 2d morphing techniques

were 1st developed in 1967 at the University of toronto, beside the event of Environmental

Reflection. ILM’s different contributions are, the mummy, The Haunting and Wild Wild

West. different major effects movies this year are The Matrix, whose VFX were created by

Manex Visual Effects, Toy Story 2 (Pixar), supernova (Digital Domain), Deep Blue sea

(Hammerhead) and Lake Placid (Digital Domain).

As we have a tendency to go into consecutive millennium, queries that is usually

asked at intervals the pc animation and effects community is “what is that the next big

thing?” ‘Jar Jar Binks’ from Star Wars Episode one (ILM) (1999) was the primary

photorealistic all digital main character in a film. Individuals are still fascinated by the idea of

entirely digital photorealistic humans. With the development in each hardware and software

system our ability to make a lot of and greater digital characters improves by the year.

Challenges

This is the first of its kind film that we shot and put in the editing phase. We have had

worked on different kind of genres before but not like this one. Some of the biggest

challenges are as follows.

 Lack of VFX supervision: As students we had never been taught about

animations, visual effects and computer generated imagery. So it was one of the

biggest challenge on set and throughout the process. We had to come up with

ideas from ourselves and to create new things in order to make things work. There

was a lack of mentor and supervision which we felt that it was required. As in our

country, there are not many science fiction movies being made so we had to cope

up with the situation on our own selves. As our inspiration of the film was Harry

Potter, we had to study every scene of the harry potter film in order to understand

how the CGI and VFX worked in the particular scenes. So when we are going to

create that, we knew what we have to do.

 Lack of equipment: VFX industry is as big as camera industry. It has its own sets,

equipment, tricks and strategies.
