A. ENGLISH TEXT

Do You Speak English ?

I had an amusing experience last year. After I had left a small village in the south of
France, I drove on to the next town. On the way, a young man waved to me. I stopped
and he asked me for a lift. As soon as he had got into car, I said good morning to him in
French and he replied in the same language. Apart from a few words, I do not know any
French at all. Neither of us spoke during the journey. I had nearly reached the town,
when young man suddenly said, very slowly, “ Do You Speak English “. As I soon
learnt, he was English himself!.

B. TRANSLATE

Apakah Anda Bebicara Bahasa Inggris ?

Saya mempunyai pengalaman menyenagkan tahun lalu. Setelah saya meninggalkan

desa kecil di selatan Perancis. Aku melaju ke kota berikutnya. Di jalan, seorang pria
melambai kepadaku. Aku berhenti dan dia meminta tumpangan kepada saya. Segera
setelah ia masuk ke dalam mobil, saya mengucapkan selamat pagi kepadanya dalam
bahasa Perancis dan dia menjawab dalam bahasa yang sama. Selain dari beberapa kata,
saya tidak tahu apapun bahasa perancis sama sekali. Tidak ada dari kami berbicara
selama perjalanan. Saya telah hampir mencapai kota, ketika pemuda tiba-tiba berkata
sangat lambat, “ Anda berbicara bahasa Inggris? “. Seperti yang segera sayab tahu, dia
Inggris sendiri!.

1. I had an amusing experience (last year)
Last week, month etc; the last week, month etc;Last week, month etc (without the) is
the week, month etc just before this one. If i am speaking in july, last month was june;
in 2006, last year was 2005. The last week, month etc is the period of seven/thirty/etc
days up to the moment of speaking. On july 15th 2006, the last month is the period
from june 16th to july 15th: the last year is the 12 months starting in july 2005.
Compare:

- I was ill last week, but I’m OK this weeek. (NOT I was ill the last week...)

I’ve had a cold for the last week. I feel terrible.

- We’ve lived here for the last year, and we’re very happy with the place.

2. (After) I had left

In clauses with after, we often use present tense and past perfect tenses to show that
one thing is completed before another starts.
I’ll telephone you after I’ve seen Jake.
After I had finished school, I went to America.
3. I stopped and he (asked) me for a lift
Ask + for + invinitive
I asked john to go home. (= I told John I would like him to go home)
4. (As soon as) he had got into car
However, we can use the past perfect with after, as soonas etc to emphasise that the
first action is sparate, independent of the second, completed before the second started.
She didn’t feel the same after dog had died.
As soon as he had finished his exams, he went to Paris from a month.
5. He replied in (the same) language
Before a clause, the same ... that or the same ... who can be used.
EX : That’s the same man that/who asked me for money yesterday.
As is also possible before a clause, especially with a noun that is the object of the
following verb.
EX : He’s wearing the same shirt that/as he had on yesterday.
As/ who/that can be left out when they refer to the object or the following verb.
EX : He’s wearing the same shirt he had on yesterday.
Note also the expression do the same.
EX : Why do you always try to do the same as your brother?
Joe and carlo went on a camping holiday, and we’re going to do the same.
6. I do not know any French (at all)
At all is often used to emphasise the meaning of (not) any.
I’ll do any job at all – even road-sweeping.
She doesn’t speak any english at all.
7. (Neither of us) spoke during the jurney.
We use neither of before a determiner (for example the, my, these) and before a
pronoun. The noun or pronoun is plural.
EX : Neither of my brothers can sing. (not neither my brothers can sing)
Neither of us saw it happen.
After neither of+noun/pronoun, we use singular verb in a formal style.
EX : Neither of my sisters is married.
