5S AND 3 R’s

What are the 5S?


1. Seiri (Sort)
2. Seiton (Straighten, Set)
3. Seiso (Shine, Sweep)
4. Seiketsu (Standardize)
5. Shitsuke (Sustain)
Enumerate and explain every S in 5S.
1. Seiri (Sort) -Distinguishing between necessary and unnecessary things, and
getting rid of what you do not need.

2. Seiton (Straighten, Set) -The practice of orderly storage so the right item can
be picked efficiently (without waste) at the right time, easy to access for everyone. A
place for everything and everything in its place.

3. Seiso (Shine, Sweep) -Create a clean worksite without garbage, dirt and dust,
so problems can be more easily identified (leaks, spills, excess, damage, etc.)

4. Seiketsu (Standardize) -Setting up standards for a neat, clean, workplace.

5. Shitsuke (Sustain) - Implementing behaviors and habits to maintain the


established standards over the long term, and making the workplace organization the
key to managing the process for success.
How to apply the 5S in ICT?

5S (Sort, Set in order, Shine, Standardize, and Sustain) is a method used by


quality professionals to organize their workplace, predominantly in the mechanical
industry.
What are the 3 R’s?
1. Reduce
2. Reuse
3. Recycle

Enumerate and explain every R in 3 R’s.


1. Reduce -is cutting back on the amount of trash we make.
2. Reuse –is finding a new way to use trash so that we don’t have to throw it out.
3. Recycle –is using trash to remake new goods that can be sold again.
How to apply the 3 R’s in ICT?
1. Reduce - is that you should limit the number of purchases that you make in
the first place.
2. Reuse - is that you should reuse items as much as possible before replacing
them.
3. Recycle - is that you should ensure that items or their components are put to
some new purpose as much as possible.

WEEE
What counts as WEEE?
Ans. It is broken to 14 categories –
a. Large household appliances (e.g. white goods but not including
cooling equipment)
b. Small household appliances (e.g. vacuums, irons, toasters)
c. IT and telecoms equipment (e.g. computers, printers, calculators,
phones, answer machines but not display monitors)
d. Consumer equipment (e.g. radios, hi-fi equipment, electronic musical
instruments but not televisions)
e. Lighting equipment
f. Electrical and electronic tools (e.g. drills, saws, sewing machines etc.,
but excluding large stationary industrial tools)
g. Toys, leisure and sports equipment (e.g. train sets, video games,
coin slot machines and all sports equipment with electrical components)
h. Medical devices (e.g. dialysis machines, ventilators)
i. Monitoring and Control instruments (e.g. smoke detectors, thermostats)
j. Automatic dispensers (e.g. ATMs, vending machines)
k. Display equipment (e.g. TVs and monitors)
l. Cooling equipment (e.g. refrigeration equipment)
m. Gas discharge lamps (amended for 2013 to include all LED light sources
