c. Students work in groups of 7 to 10 to discuss the message of the poem.
d. Let the students listen to a recorded radio play entitled “Sorry, Wrong Number” by Lucille Fletche

Motivational Questions:
a. Look at the words inside the box. What do they have in common?
b. What do you call these words?

C. Presentation
Discussion Proper:
Gerund  Gerunds are words that are formed with verbs but act as nouns. They’re very easy to spot, since
every gerund is a verb with ing tacked to its tail. There are no exceptions to this rule.
Example: Swimming in the ocean has been Sharon’s passion
since she was five years old.

Gerundial Phrase  A gerund phrase always starts with gerunds, always includes modifiers and often
includes other objects, always functions as a noun, always the subjects, the objects, or the subject
complements in sentences.
Example: Blowing bubbles on a windy day is a fun activity for children.

USES OF GERUND

 SUBJECT  Drawing is my hobby.


 OBJECT  I enjoy drawing.
 APPOSITIVE  The best hobby, drawing, is also the least expensive.

1. Task 14 Sharing My World / Shaping My World


With a partner, read the paragraph carefully then underline the gerund and gerundial phrases used in
the text.

A blank piece of paper represents my world. I draw a stick figure to represent myself. Around
the paper, I start writing significant things in my life and I draw lines between them; my world is full of
connections. The connections I have with people, my community, and the earth itself. The connections
I built shape my dreams of marketing, law, and fashion, and I color my world with numerous shades.
Coloring it gives me excitement.
2. Honing Skills (Quiz # 1): Underline the gerund and Identify whether it is used as the Subject,
Subject Complement, Object of a Preposition, Direct Object or Appositive on a ½ Crosswise sheet
of paper.
a. Helping a friend is an automatic yes in your book.
b. Helping others with a favor is dangerous and should be avoided.
c. When it comes to helping, ultimately, it’s not even about expecting money or just helping friends
out.
d. Take time getting used to refusing people’s requests.
e. Although simple, it is similar to the rules that prevent people from bumping into others in the
streets.

IV. Assignment

Write a response and give the letter sender an advice. Use five gerunds in the phrases of your letter. Look
for an example on page 274 of your book A Journey through Anglo-American Literature 9.
