1. OBJECTIVE
To define the minimum technical requirements for Medium Voltage AC Motors, these requirements are an
attachment to the equipment technical dossier of the driven machine (e. g. a pump or a compressor). In case of
deviations from this document, these shall be brought to the attention of ALSTOM Package Engineer immediately and
written approval on how to proceed shall be obtained.

2. SCOPE OF APPLICATION
This specification is valid for Medium Voltage AC Induction Motors >200kW for direct on line (DOL) starting with
rated voltage 6.3 kV for the KARAHA Geothermal Power Plant.
Special requirements for motors in hazardous areas, for example explosive atmospheres, are not part of this
document.
Special requirements for motors used in adjustable speed drives are not part of this document.

5. MV AC MOTOR TECHNICAL REQUIREMENTS – ELECTRICAL PART

5.1. Rated frequency


50 Hz

5.2. Rated voltage (steady-state voltage)


6.3 kV
Earthed through resistance.

5.3. Combined variation of voltage and frequency for steady-state conditions


Regarding the voltage and frequency variation, the motor shall be designed for operation with the following criteria:
 In Zone A: at rated Voltage max.  5% and at rated Frequency max.  2%,
 In Zone B: at rated Voltage max. 10% and at rated Frequency max. + 5%, - 6%
Zone A: an AC motor shall be capable of performing its rated torque (i.e. primary function) continuously within zone
A, but needs not comply fully with its performance at rated voltage and frequency.
Zone B: an AC motor shall be capable of performing its rated torque within zone B, but may exhibit greater deviations
from its performance than in zone A. Temperature rises may be higher than at rated voltage and frequency, and most
likely will be higher than those in zone A

5.4. Insulation system Thermal class
155 (F), according to IEC 60034-1 and IEC 60085.

5.5. Limit of winding temperature rise


- as per Thermal class 130 (B), in accordance with IEC 60034-1 2010, clause 7.3-Note 2
- as per Thermal class 155 (F), for operation in Zone B as defined in item 5.3.

5.6. Efficiency classification


Motor shall be high efficiency type as local codes and standards.

5.7. Dynamic voltage during starting :


80% of the rated voltage.

5.8. Voltage during dip/ duration :


75% of rated voltage/ 5 minutes, at full load of driven machine.

5.9. Starting :
Direct On Line (DOL)

5.10. Starting current :


≤ 6 times the rated current.

5.11. Locked rotor :


The locked rotor time [s] shall be larger than starting time at 80% of Un. If not possible, a zero speed switch shall be
installed in the motor for locked rotor protection.

5.12. Power change over to neighbour bus :


Not applicable

5.13. Maximum voltage requirement for power change over to neighbour bus :

5.14. Shock resistant coils for power change over :

5.15. Insulation :

Short-circuit (instantaneous, definite time), overload, earth leakage, unbalanced phase, stalling, number of starts.
Alstom will inform during detail design the CT data if required.

5.17. Bearing insulation - non driving end (NDE) bearing :


Sleeve bearings : Yes, resistance ≥10MΩ.
Anti-friction bearings : Yes, resistance ≥10MΩ.

5.18. Service Factor

5.19. Grounding terminals :


One placed on motor frame and one inside the main terminal box, see also item 5.20.7. They have to be connected to
each other.

5.20. Terminal Boxes

5.20.1. Degree of protection :


As per item 6.5

5.20.2. Design regarding short circuit:


A short circuit inside the motor enclosure shall not affect the structural integrity of the box.
The switchgear interrupting duty is about 25kA at 6.3kV.

5.20.3. Construction requirements:


 provided with a predetermined breaking seam or a pressure relief diaphragm to the outside of the terminal
box,
 splinter proof,
 split longitudinally or completely removable cover

5.20.4. Rotation of the terminal boxes:


4 x 90° with the terminals remaining in place

5.20.5. Connection Plates (Cable Gland Plates)


Material: aluminium made (to avoid overheating).
Thickness of aluminium plates: at least 5 mm.
Openings: none, connection plates shall be provided drilled and equipped with cable glands.
Requirements: without any openings for cables.

5.20.6. Cable glands :


Yes.

5.20.7. Means for grounding :


Yes, grounding terminal within the terminal box (min. M12) and it shall be connected to motor frame grounding
terminal.

5.20.8. Main terminal box :
Yes, complete with terminals.

5.20.9. Star point box :


Yes, the star point of the stator shall be made accessible.

5.20.10. Auxiliary terminal boxes :


Yes, one for supervision (temperature detectors,..) and one for anti-condensation heating.

5.20.11. Anti-condensation heating :


 Supply voltage: 230 V single-phase, 50Hz.
 Heater terminals will be energized when the motor is at standstill.
 A prominent warning label shall be provided : "Warning – circuit may be live"

5.20.12. Size of terminal box :


Designed for 6.3kV
The box has to provide enough space for cable potheads or terminations

5.20.13. Data of cable to be connected:


Alstom will inform during detail design the cross section and number of cables to be connected. The supplier shall
provide a terminal box allowing the connection of these cables. An arrangement drawing of the terminal box shall be
sent to Alstom for comments.

5.21. Motor Data :


For sizing the motor protection relays and for selectivity studies following data are required and have to be sent to

6. MV AC MOTOR TECHNICAL REQUIREMENTS – MECHANICAL PART

6.1. Operation conditions (ambient):

6.2. Operation:
S1 (maximum continuous duty)

6.3. Number of sequential starts per hour:


If not otherwise required in the equipment technical dossier of the driven machine, a minimum of:
 three successive starts with the motor initially at maximum ambient temperature.
 two successive starts with the motor initially at full load operating temperature.

6.4. Type of cooling:


Refer to Equipment Technical Dossier of driven machine:
 Air Cooled, TEFC
 Minimum IC4x according IEC 60034-6 is required

6.5. Degree of protection:


 Indoor motors : IP 55
 Outdoor motors : IP 65

6.6. Anti-condensation heaters:


Yes

6.7. Enclosure drainage:


Yes

6.8. Protective roof if vertical mounting (sheltered motor):


For motors placed outdoor of buildings or enclosures: Yes

6.9. Direction of rotation:


It shall be possible to change the direction of rotation on site during commissioning of the motor. For direction test,
motor may be uncoupled. It must be possible to rotate with full reverse speed (powered by driven machine). Direction
of motor rotation shall be clearly marked.
Motor shall be designed at least for overspeed of +20% for 2 minutes.

6.10. Reverse speed supervision:
Refer to the equipment technical dossier of the driven machine.

6.11. Special or second shaft end:


As required by supplier of driven equipment.

6.12. Vibrations:
Same requirements as for driven equipment refer to the equipment technical dossier of the driven machine.

6.13. Vibration monitoring:


Refer to the equipment technical dossier of the driven machine. One set of vibration probes (single-axis) at each
bearing for the detection of shaft vibration relative to the bearing housing.

6.14. Mounting of coupling part:


Flexible or rigid coupling shall be used between the drive motors and driven units. The coupling shall be protected
against unintentional contact.

6.15. Winding temperature detectors:


Two (2) PT 100 per phase:
*one PT 100 per phase shall be used as spare
*one (1) Transmitter (4-20 mA) powered by DCS per phase, located in the auxiliary terminal box, to be provided by
the motor supplier.

6.16. Bearing temperature detectors:


To be provided by the motor supplier as defined below : (Signal to DCS)

6.16.1. Sleeve bearings


 Vertical motor
o Refer to the equipment technical dossier of the driven machine.
 Horizontal motor
o Refer to the equipment technical dossier of the driven machine.

6.16.2. Antifriction bearings:


Deep groove ball bearings with regreasing nipples or oil lubrificated.
 Vertical motor :

6.18. Noise level maximum [dB (A)]:
As required in the equipment technical dossier of the driven equipment and not more than the values stated in client’s
specification (85dBA).

Stainless steel AISI 304

6.20. Quality assurance:


As required in the equipment technical dossier of the driven machine.

7. TEST REQUIREMENTS
Tests shall be performed in accordance with latest issue of applicable standards, refer to item 4.
Test reports shall be provided as part of the documentation.

The routine tests shall be carried out according the requirements of the NEMA MG1, IEEE12, API541 and NETA. At
least following tests shall be included:

 Visual inspection, checking of rating plates etc.


 Checking of functioning and completeness of accessories (terminal boxes, temperature detectors, etc.)
 Checking of terminal markings and direction of rotation
 Resistance measurement of the windings at ambient temperature
 No load measurement, quantities to be measured: voltage, current, power and speed at rated voltage and
frequency. Control of vibration and temperature of bearings.
 Short circuit measurement at rated current, quantities to be measured: voltage, current, power and
temperature of windings.
 High voltage test for motor and fitted MV-terminal box
 Insulation resistance measurement
 Special Test: Guaranteed efficiencies shall be determined using IEEE 112,Method F (direct measurement of
stray load loss)
