RACS (ME4031) ASSIGNMENT NO.:- 3 7TH SEM MECH. ENGG.

[Bring Ph charts for various refrigerants, steam table, psychrometric chart, Moody chart to exam]

1. A conference room for sitting 100 persons is to be maintained at 220C DBT and 60% RH. The
outdoor conditions are at 400C DBT and at 270C WBT. The various loads in the auditorium are as
follows:
Sensible and latent heat loads per person 80W and 50W respectively: lights and fans 15000
W, sensible heat gain through glass, walls, ceiling etc. 15000W. The air infiltration is 20 m3/min
and fresh air supply is 100 m3/min. Two-third of recirculated room air and one-third of fresh air
are mixed before entering the cooling coil. The by-pass factor of the coil is 0.1.
Determine apparatus dew point, the grand total heat load and effective room sensible heat
factor.
2. An air conditioned system is to be designed for a restaurant with the following data:
Outside design conditions: 400C DBT, 280C WBT, Inside design conditions: 250C DBT, 50% RH,
Solar heat gain through walls, roof and floor: 5.87 kW, Solar heat gain through glass: 5.52 kW,
Occupants=25, Sensible heat gain per person: 58W, Latent heat gain per person: 58W, Internal
lighting load: 15 lamps of 100 W, 10 fluorescent tubes of 80W, sensible heat gain from other
sources: 11.63 Kw, infiltration air: 15 m3/min.
If 25% fresh air and 75% recirculated air is mixed and passed through the conditioner coil.find:
(a)The amount of total air required in m3/h, (b) The dew point temperature of the coil, (c) The
condition of supply air to the room, (d) The capacity of the conditioning plant.
Assume by-pass factor of the coil is 0.2.
Draw the schematic diagram of the system and show the system on skeleton psychrometric
chart and insert the temperature and enthalpy values at salient points.
3. A galvanized steel duct of 0.4 m diameter and 20 m long carries air at 20 0C and 1.013 bar. If the
flow rate of air through the duct is 60 m3/min, determine the pressure loss due to friction in
N/m2 and in mm of water. (Surface roughness for duct e=0.15 mm), use Moody chart for
calculating friction factor.
4. A duct 2m by 1m in size carrying conditioned air runs in a straight line for 50 m from the supply
fan. It divides into two parts each of 80 m long and 2m by 1 m in cross section as shown;

If the quantity of air discharged at C is 1600 m3/min, calculate the quantity discharged at D and the static
pressure at the fan outlet A. Calculate the duct friction loss in N/m2 taking the value of friction factor as
0.005.

5. The fig. shows a duct ABCDEF in which air is supplied at A and discharged freely to atmosphere
at F. The velocity of air in the duct is 540 m/min. The loss in the expander BC is 0.5 times the
velocity pressure in duct AB and loss in the reducer DE is 0.2 times the velocity pressure in the
0.263V 1.85
duct EF. Using the expression, p f  , where pf is the pressure loss due to friction in
D1.27
mm of water per 100 m length of duct, V is air velocity in m/s, and D is the diameter of the duct
in m, calculate the static pressure at point A.
