Running head: CORRUPTION IS A SOCIAL ILL THAT CANNOT BE ENTIRELY EXTINGUISHED

Introduction

Corruption,a common word normally spoken of nearly in our daily activities. Daily news

letters ,radio stations, reports, politicians and citizens of good will speak of it daily. But what does

corruption really mean?According to the Oxford dictionary ,corruption is a dishonest or a fraudulent

act by persons in power, typically involving bribery. According to (Tortajada & Biswas, 2018)

corruption is as old as back in the (3100–2700 BC) when the ancient Egyptians noted this act in

their judiciary system. In today’s society this impudent behavior is so much deep rooted in the

society that it is nearly impossible to extinguish not only because it is old but also because the

societal morals have highly decreased. There has been increasingly human greed for money and

powers. Just like a deadly infectious disease corruption has penetrated all the roots of the society

and its slowly eating human kindness and care.

The levels of mind corrosion that corruption has caused in the society are immeasurable. We

often blame the politicians for all that happens. But wait. You find that in most of the developing

nation of the World, the voters are always the number one contributing factor. Political games are

well played in such nations, with politicians taking advantage of the poverty levels of such

societies. Always giving handouts cash for their elections. In most cases, such politicians after

winning ,they are in to recover their spent money during the campaigns.

Several factors fuel this uncouth behavior. Lack of strong pubic opinion forums in most

nation is the most obvious reason. In some cases even where such forums exist ,dictatorship and

barbaric governance makes sure the freedom of expression is infringed. Poor salaries in government

sector is another contributing factor. Economies are tough, employees aren’t well paid. The result is

people stealing public resources in order to meet their financial constraints. It is also hardly

impossible to control, a society that focuses all its energy on getting rich and more richer. Peoples

minds have changed, and when they can’t make enough for themselves, they end up embezzling

funds or accepting unlawful amounts of money from other people. To extinguish corruption starts

with individuals, which is why it is difficult since it means the whole society must be taught good

morals at once.
