A CASE STUDY ABOUT THE METAL STRAW AS A NEW INNOVATIVE STRATEGY TO

PROMOTE ENVIRONMENTAL DEVELOPMENT

MAIN ARGUMENT:

 That we should discriminate using plastic straws and look for other alternatives instead.
 People have a limited amount of knowledge about the risk of using plastic straw.

According to GMA NEWS 2018 Data from the 2015 study "Plastic waste inputs from land into the
ocean" shows that the Philippines wastes 6,237,653 kg (6875.84 tons) of plastic per day, of which 81% is
mismanaged.

Senator Risa Hontiveros The proposed law also mandates food establishments and other service
providers occupying fixed spaces, such as sari-sari stores, to prominently display signs informing their
customers of their “no plastic straw and stirrer” policy. Bill No. 1866 bans establishments from offering
consumers single-use plastic straws and stirrers, the most common plastic products found in oceans. The
audit, she noted, found 6 garbage patches in oceans, the largest of which is Great Pacific Garbage Patch,
containing 79,000 tons of plastic debris and spanning 1.6 million square kilometers, twice the size of
France. Establishments that will violate the ban shall be fined P50,000 for the first offense, P80,000 for
the second offense, and P150,000 on top of a 1-year suspension of business permits for the third offense,
the bill suggests ABCBN NEWS (2018). With Filipinos increasingly taking interest in adapting an eco-
friendly lifestyle, Senator Risa Hontiveros files a bill to help support this initiative.

Why is plastic bad for our environment? . They’re also not easily recyclable in most
facilities. According to EcoCycle, roughly 500 million disposable straws are used by Americans daily.
And they are also the e seventh most common piece of trash collected in 2017 on global beaches by
volunteer cleanup crews associated with the Ocean Conservancy, a marine environmental advocacy
group.
Why should we go for metal straw?:
1. stainless steel straws are perfectly safe to use and BPA free
2. environmentally friendly and child friendly.
