ENG 101 – ORAL COMMUNICATION


Revised Course Syllabus
First Semester, AY 2019-2020

VISION: NMSC: A place where Science and Technology Education and Research on Indigenous Resource works towards a more Globally Competitive
Higher Education Institution.

MISSION: The state college shall primarily offer higher professional, technical instructions for special purposes and promote research and extension
services, advanced studies and progressive leadership in education, agriculture, fishery, engineering, arts and sciences, short-term vocational-technical and other
courses as may be relevant.
It shall also provide primary consideration to the integration of researches/studies for the development of the Province of Misamis Occidental.

School of Teacher Education Goal: To be a model center for education.

School of Teacher Education Objectives:

The school of education specifically aims to:


1. Produce teachers who are imbued with relevant professional, pedagogical, and technical knowledge; analytical, critical thinking
skills; competencies; and ethical values for holistic development.
2. Promote educational practices particularly in response to the local, national, and global needs and realities.
3. Strengthen research programs that will enhance the generation of new knowledge and its application to real situation.
4. Establish feasible income generating projects relevant to the needs of the community and the college.
5. Create strong linkages among local, national and international entities to establish sustainable extension programs.
I. COURSE DESCRIPTION

The course is designed to develop each student’s communicative competence as well as enhance their cultural and intercultural awareness through multimodal
tasks that provide them opportunities for communicating effectively and appropriately to multicultural audiences in a local or global context. It equips students with
tools for critical evaluation of a variety of texts and focuses on the power of language and the impact of images to emphasize the importance of conveying messages
responsibly. The knowledge, skills, and insights that students gain from this course may be used in their other academic endeavors, chosen disciplines, and future
careers as they compose and produce relevant oral, audio-visual, and/or web-based output for various purposes.

II. GENERAL OBJECTIVES:

By successfully completing this course, the students will be able to:

1. Identify their personal communication style and communication strengths and weaknesses.
2. Effectively communicate ideas in small groups and team meetings.
3. Develop and give short informative and persuasive presentations.
4. Analyze an audience and adjust communication style and delivery accordingly.
5. Recognize how body language and other non-verbal cues communicate unconscious messages.
6. Identify several techniques for improving their listening, response, and feedback skills.
7. Demonstrate improved ability to communicate effectively in a variety of settings including the home, academe and in their day-to-day interactions.

COURSE REQUIREMENTS Each student is required to:
1) attend at least 80% of the class hours (i.e., at least 12 sessions)
2) submit individual/group assignments/projects
3) give a presentation of topics assigned to him/her; and
4) pass the major exams
VI. GRADING SYSTEM
The grading system is based on the prescription of the DepEd order.

VIII. INSTRUCTOR’S CLASSROOM POLICY


Lateness. A student will be marked “late” if he/she enters the class 5 minutes after the indicated time. Any student who comes to class 15 minutes after the scheduled time or
always late for two consecutive meetings shall be marked “absent”.
Missed work or exam. Any student who missed to give a class presentation, submit a work assignment, or to take a test should consult the concerned instructor for
immediate compliance if said student missed schoolwork because of a valid reason.
Cheating and plagiarism. Any student who committed any form of academic dishonesty shall be given disciplinary action provided in the NMSCST Student’s Handbook.
Use of technology. Cell phones should be turned off while the session is in progress. Using laptops, notebook PCs, smart phones, and tablets shall be prohibited unless the
instructor is aware of the purpose and permits student’s request.
