Detailed Lesson Plan in English for Grade VII

I. OBJECTIVES
At the end of the lesson the students are expected to:
A. Recall the three early settlers in the Philippines.
B. Discuss Voyage to a New Land as a mark of a new beginning.
C. Appreciate the significance of the voyage to us as people.
D. Use the Reading Tree and Sequence Chart as a reading strategy.

II. SUBJECT MATTER


Topic: “Voyage to a New Land” an excerpt from Visayan epic Maragtas by:
Pedro Alcantara Monteclaro
Values Integrated:
Reference: English Communication Arts and Skill through Philippine Literature
English 7, page 103-106
Materials: Cartolina, Pentel pen, colored paper, laptop, PowerPoint presentation,
video clips.

III. LEARNING TASKS


A. Motivation
1. Travel Box (Students will fill the empty box of the place they want to visit in
the future)
2. Unlocking of Difficulties/Vocabulary Development
Instruction: Underline the words that give the closest meaning to the italicized
words.
B. Activity
3. Let the students recall the physical and social attributes of Aetas, Indonesians,
and Malays through an activity.
4. Show a video clip about the brief history of the Philippines.
5. Present the Reading Tree and Sequence Chart as a reading strategy.
6. Presentation of the Story.
7. Group Work so that students will have a deeper understanding of the story.
Group 1- What is the story all about?
Group 2- Why is this voyage important to us as people?
Group 3- Why it is said that we are come from a race of hardy people and
heroes?
C. Analysis
 Group work presentation
 Brief explanation about the background of the author.
 Show the Map of Borneo and Panay.
 Discuss the origin of the story
D. Abstraction
 Who is the author of the story?
 Who are the characters in the story?
 Why do you think the Bornean Datus need to find new land?
 Where did they land?
 How do the Ati and the Bornean Datus describe in the story?
 What traits did the Ati show? Are these similar to the present-day Filipino
Traits?
 Why did he need to ask his followers? Describe him as a leader,
 Do you think the golden hat is a good exchange for the land? Is this
exchange realistic today?
 Is this freedom in acquiring land still existing today?
 Did the Bornean Datus contribute a lot to us as Filipinos?
Key Question:
How will you associate the story of the Ten Bornean Datus to the OFWs
nowadays?
E. Application:
Group 1- Create your own reading tree and answer the questions ask.
Group 2- Rearrange the given events in chronological order using sequence chart.
F. Assessment:
1. Would you consider Datu Puti and the Borneans brave? Why or Why not?
2. What evidence shows that Marikudo respected the opinion of his wife?
3. What details in the story indicate that the Borneans came from a more
advanced, more prosperous society?

Search for Nouns and Noun Signals.
