Teaching Philosophy

JR Hmura

I will be a direct influence on my students’ opinions of physical education, therefore I

will show them the achievements they all make through assessment so this will help them

embrace or spark their passion for physical activity. I will do so by adapting to their learning

styles and teaching them to be a competent individual of fitness and sport. I will light or stoke

the fire for physical education in every one of my students.

My goal is for my students to have a positive outlook on physical education. My students

will understand the purpose of physical education in their individual lives and implement

physical activity long after graduation. My students will not be misled by the common

misconception “Gym isn’t a real (required) class.” Students will develop their motor skills to all

be physically competent in about 70% of units and physically proficient in 30% of all units. I

will also teach students numerous life skills that are required in the workforce, such as

communication, problem solving, and group development skills.

I have a teaching ‘tool belt’ with more ‘tools’ than Bob the Builder. I firstly will be an

outstanding role model for my students and demonstrate my knowledge of lifetime activities and

how it has helped me maintain a quality and healthy lifestyle. I pride myself in teaching with a

variety of quality teaching styles from practice and reciprocal, to jig saw and guided discovery. I

have a strong background in experiential education and programs such as Project Adventure and

I will use that background to enrich my students with a variety of life skills that are not found in

traditional physical education.

I will use assessments to lookout for each individual students’ best interests. Assessments

will be designed rubrics based on National and Local state standards. I will use pre-post

assessments for the year and per unit, to allow students to see the progress that they have made. I
will use self check assessments so students can judge themselves, as well as my own scoring

rubrics. I believe regular, active assessment is invaluable to students. This process allows them to

see the progress they made themselves, by comparing their end results in the post assessment to

where they started off in the pre-assessment. Otherwise a student that learned how to dribble and

shoot free throws does not know if they got any better at basketball because they are still not as

good as a varsity athlete. Helping students to compare their results to themselves, not the results

of others is my goal. I will emphasize their successes through assessments so every student

learns to enjoy physical education, because everyone enjoys being successful.

I look forward to creating the most inclusive environment possible for my students each

and every day. With ever growing changes in races and gender identities, I place immense value

on diversity, whether it is a diverse culture, appearance, class, or simply diverse names.

Regardless of the diversity, there will always be inclusion. I will ensure my students also

understand why inclusion is important. I will adapt and modify all necessary classroom settings

in order to accommodate for all diverse attributes including ability, gender, or other. I use my

various teaching styles and include all students to help indirectly educate my students about our

individual differences and how we can embrace them.

All in all, I will be a top educator and a positive influence for my students, providing

extensive knowledge beyond the curriculum for those who seek it. I will ensure every student has

ultimate success and meaningful progress with their experience in physical education and I will

light the fire of passion for physical activity or simply embrace the flames and turn that passion

into a roaring furnace that may light other flames around them.
