Physical Activity:
What is Physical Activity?
- Any bodily movement produced by skeletal muscles, that result in
expenditure of energy
Types of Physical Activity:
- Household activities
- Occupational
- Transportation
- Leisure time
- Exercise
Physical Activity Intensities:
- Light: does not require a lot of aerobic effort
o Ex: gardening
- Moderate: increase in breathing and heartrate
o Ex: brisk walking
- Vigorous: large increase in breathing and heart rate
o Ex: jogging
How to Measure Physical Activity Intensity (Metabolic Equivalent Level):
- 1 MET = energy (oxygen) used by body as you sit quietly
o Light: less than 3 MET
o Moderate: 3-6 MET
o Vigorous: greater than 6 MET
o Sedentary: less than or equal to 1.5 MET
Calorie:
- 1 MET = caloric expenditure of 1kcal/kg/hour
Health Benefits of Physical Activity:
- Regular MVPA (moderate, vigorous physical activity) reduces the
risk of adverse health outcomes
- Benefits outweigh the risk of adverse outcomes
- Substantial benefits for adults with 150-300 mins a week of MPA
