Context and Rationale

The new trend in the K to 12 nowadays is the target of the DepEd in the

development of lifelong learners through the enhancement of 21st century skills and the

acquisition of the core values -Makadiyos, Makakalikasan at Makabansa. The addition of

two years in the curriculum of the basic education known as the Senior High School

Program is the latest trend in the educational system. With its two year of

implementation, all the expectations from a SHS graduate must be exhibited through

entering a college degree, putting up a business or and working abroad as the

expectations: Trabaho, Kolehiyo at Negosyo.

It is indeed the role of every school head to assist the learners in achieving their

goals through the program of work immersion or the on-the-job training during the

second semester of the last academic year of the Senior High School Program. Within the

school year of Grades 11 and 12, different research subjects are being offered in the

curriculum. These subjects will really test how responsible, and mature the SHS learners

are. The learners seemed not to accept the fact they are into real research. Most of the

students assumed that research subjects are difficult and tasking. Performance tasks are

applied readily for the completion of the research paper. Related studies conducted by

few student-researchers during the school year 2017-2018 are about Practical Research 1

with the findings that research subject is difficult and very tasking.
RESEARCH CAPABILITIES OF GRADE 12 LEARNERS

DIVISION OF PAMPANGA

The researcher , A Senior High School Teacher with a designation of Master

Tecaher II of Porac National High School assigned the as a Research Adviser of Grade

12 TVL Learners this school year 2018-2019, realized the significance of determining the

research capacity of the learner.

The researcher gave an assessment to the students and included in the test

question concerning the difficulty of the Research Subject. The researcher found out after

the evaluation that majority of the students considered Practical Research 2 as a difficult

subject due to several reasons. Some contributory factors mentioned in the assessment

are: lack of communication skills, lack of technology such as gadgets that will help them

encode the manuscript, lack of internet connection, difficulty in accessing internet in

remote places, and lack first hand experiences in doing real research.

Based on the daily encountered by the researcher during their Practical Research 2

class, it was revealed that most of the students do not have laptops or computers at home,

majority of them depends on the “pisonet” shops or computer shops nearby or very far

from their residential areas.

The researcher also gathered data on the previous academic performance of the

Grade 12 learners when they were still Grade 11.As revealed from the Form 138 or report

card given during the enrolment period , the researcher found that out one hundred forty

four (144) Grade 12 learners , 55 learners did not meet the expectations of the required

learning competencies , 100 are in the fairly satisfactory level while 55 are in the

satisfactory level, 21 students are in the very satisfactory level while only 34 students are
RESEARCH CAPABILITIES OF GRADE 12 LEARNERS

DIVISION OF PAMPANGA

in the outstanding level. The consolidated MPS of the Grade 12 learners during the

school year 2017-2018, second semester is 64% below the standard.

The researcher used critical thinking made evaluation to identify problem that

need to address immediately such as the difficulty encountered by the student-researchers

in conducting research.

The results of the gathering of data through an assessment, interview and school

records of the Grade 12 learners made the researcher realized that there is really a need to

make an assessment on the research capability of the Grade 12 learners.

It was emphasized by Calderon and Gonzales (1993) that research is a very

important tool in national and global progress. Its value cannot be underestimated for it is

directed towards the preservation and improvement of quality of life. Moreover, the

purpose of research is to serve man and due to research ,man becomes progressive

because man is utilizing the products of research.

The Curriculum of the Senior High School program of the Basic Education

Curriculum or the K to 12 Curriculum for Grade 11 and Grade 12 includes several

research courses, or subjects taught in Filipino and English such as Pagbasa at

Pananaliksik, Practical Research 1(Qualitative Research), Practical Research

2(Quantitative Research ) and Investigation, Immersion and Inquiries.

All of these research subjects are to be taken by the Senior High Students to be

able to enroll the Work Immersion as a requirement before graduation.

RESEARCH CAPABILITIES OF GRADE 12 LEARNERS

DIVISION OF PAMPANGA
Even universities and colleges provides program for the development of research

capability of both teachers and students such as the guide which was produced by the

University of the Sunshine Coast (USC) of Australia to increase the research intensity of

the university to respond to the changes in Australian environment.(

https://www.ecu.edu.au/__data/assets/pdf_file/0005/698351/clrd_gpg-capability_lr-final.pdf).

Enhancing research capability provides an opportunity for students to gain mastery of an

advanced body of knowledge and advanced research skills in areas of research practice

which have been identified as relevant to their research project but are not covered

elsewhere in the year one program. Through negotiation with an academic supervisor and

by agreement with their College, students identify a particular need they have and then

embark on an agreed program of activities offered elsewhere in the university or

externally, and/or a guided, largely independent in-depth critical study in the relevant

area, in conformity with the learning volume and outcome. Students have a level of

independence and flexibility in negotiating with the academic supervisor how they

evidence their learning.( https://www.vu.edu.au/units/UGR7007)

These proposed program of universities and colleges are only strong proofs that

there should be a need to really consider the research capabilities of the researchers, may

it be a Senior high student . undergraduate college student or a graduate student.

At the heart of contemporary discussion of the TELRI project on transferable

skills is to identify capabilities that have a wide application and to develop them through

the curriculum.
RESEARCH CAPABILITIES OF GRADE 12 LEARNERS

DIVISION OF PAMPANGA

Cognitive skills are particularly important in enabling the transfer of capability

from one situation to another, both because they are less context-dependent than some

other human abilities often referred to as skills, and because they can themselves aid

transfer. There would be wide agreement that they are transferable, at least within a

discipline.( https://warwick.ac.uk/services/ldc/resource/eguides/guidelines/capabilities/)

Research activity by its nature provides opportunities for innovation that develop

higher cognitive capabilities and foster creativity. We argue that course design should

aim at the development of those higher order learning processes. Apart from the obvious

benefits, it is believed that research-oriented learning is likely to develop students’

abilities to transfer their learning processes into new situations, so that they can develop

as experts rather than as competent practitioner.

In the project to highlight the research capability, there are two learning processes

introduced which are both reproductive process and appropriate are “Adoptive Learning”

and “Adaptive Learning”.Adoptive Learning requires the application of well- understood

knowledge and the mastery of tools, techniques and procedures in bounded situations

while Adaptive Learning makes use of high higher order thinking in an open situations

where reflective, creative and generative process.

As suggested from the article “Strengthening Research Capability”(

http://www.nrf.ac.za/division/iepd/instruments/strengthening-research-capability) four

(4) key strategies were emphasized:(1)Develop institutional infrastructure, systems and

RESEARCH CAPABILITIES OF GRADE 12 LEARNERS

DIVISION OF PAMPANGA
services to strengthen research capability(2)Develop and provide research infrastructure

including equipment and facilities(3)Develop research leadership and the research

workforce through targeted recruitment, creation of research career pathways and

retention with a focus on early and mid-career researchers(4)Attract, develop and retain

high quality higher degree research scholars, particularly with alignment to existing and

emerging areas of research strength, through scholarships and fellowships.

It is in this light that the researcher would like to assess the research capabilities

of the Senior High School learners. Despite of their young minds, the students will do

better and be the best version of researchers they may be if only given proper

opportunity and appropriate guidance in writing research.

Research Questions

The researcher aims to assess the research capability of Grade 12 learners in

Practical Research 2 in Porac National High School during the second semester of

school year 2018-2019.

Specifically, it will also seek answers to the following questions:

1. How may the Grade 12 learners be described in terms of :

1.1 Age;

1.2 Gender;

1.3 Academic Performance in English; and

1.4 Academic Performance in Research Subject?

RESEARCH CAPABILITIES OF GRADE 12 LEARNERS

DIVISION OF PAMPANGA

2. What is the level of research capabilities of Senior High School Learners in terms

of the following:

2.1 writing a research proposal; and

2.2 writing a complete research paper?

3. Is there a significant difference in the level of research capabilities of Grade 12

learners when grouped according to profile?

Hypothesis

There is no significant difference in the research capability in the level of research

capabilities of Grade 12 learners when grouped according to profile.

Significance of the Study

The research study will benefit the following: the student-respondents of Porac

National High School, the Senior High Faculty and the administrators, the researcher, and

future researchers who will conduct related research problems.

Student-Respondents. The primary purpose of this study is to provide the learners

the information on what level of research capabilities they have. This will help

them to realize their strengths and weaknesses in writing a research paper. This

will give them opportunity to know what skills and abilities concerning research

they need to enhance and develop more. This will help them on how to cope with
RESEARCH CAPABILITIES OF GRADE 12 LEARNERS

DIVISION OF PAMPANGA
the challenges and problems they encountered during the conduct of a research

,know the proper technique and to develop time management.

Administration of Porac National High School -The present study will enable

school administrators to track the level of research capabilities of Grade 12

learners of PNHS, thus, giving opportunity to know the areas that need

improvement. The faculty and the administration will be able to formulate, help

and facilitate improvements to the existing body of knowledge within the

boundaries of their academic environment through the study’s results and

findings. By such improvements, the school can then increase its possibility to be

recognized in the field of Research . And, it can assist to do future studies and

programs if the hypothesis will yield with valuable results.

Researcher. The main and over-all beneficiaries of this study will determine

whether the hypothesis is proven right or wrong. The researcher may obtain some

significant results which will add to knowledge. This would also serve as a

ground of experience for being part of Academic Formation of Porac National

High School , Senior High School Program for doing a significant research in the

academe especially in the Department of Education.

Future Researchers. This study will give an opportunity for future researchers to

obtain a more comprehensive understanding about the present study as a

reference. In like manner, the findings of the study will make the future

researchers to be well-motivated to pursue further studies because of the

RESEARCH CAPABILITIES OF GRADE 12 LEARNERS

DIVISION OF PAMPANGA
availability of materials. This study will provide them additional information

about the research capabilities of Grade 12 learners. Other future researchers can

benefit from this study as long as they will acquire and discover beneficial facts

for this study.

Scope and Limitations

The study will involve the one hundred forty-four (144) Grade 12 learners of

Porac National High School during the school year 2018-2019. It will describe the level

of research capabilities of Grade 12 Learners as the student-participants of the study.

The study will include the profile of the student-respondents in terms of age. gender.

academic performance in English ,and academic performance in Grade 11 Research

Subject.

Moreover, it will involve the use of actual observations, unstructured interview,

and survey questionnaire in gathering the data needed the data in determining the answers

to the research questions presented.

METHOD

Type of Research

This study will employ the descriptive –evaluative method of research. The

descriptive research method refers to the method used to describe data and

characteristics used to describe the population. Jackson (2009) emphasized that in

RESEARCH CAPABILITIES OF GRADE 12 LEARNERS

DIVISION OF PAMPANGA
utilizing a descriptive - survey method research, the participants answer questions

administered through interview or questionnaires. The purpose of using the descriptive

research method is to acquire accurate, factual, systematic data that can provide an

actual picture of the data set for review. The descriptive part of the study specifically

will deal with describing and analyzing the data gathered by giving proper interpretation

so that findings and conclusions are to be derived at. On the other hand, Hale (2015)

defined quantitative method treat the value of the results through giving verbal

interpretations. In this study, the quantitative part will treat the value of the quantitative

results gathered through the survey questionnaires and informal interview.

In this research study, the level of research capabilities of Grade 12 Learners

during the Academic Year 2018- 2019 of Porac National High School will be

determined through a systematic attempt in terms of writing a research proposal ,

conducting a research, writing a complete research paper, and writing a publishable

research paper.

Respondents

The Porac National High School has five (5) sections of Grade 12 in the Senior

High School Program under the Academic and Tech-Voc Tracks during the first

semester of academic year 2018-2019. The Grade 12 program with a total population of

144 who are currently enrolled in Practical Research 2 . They will be asked to answer

the specific questions in the survey questionnaire.

Sampling Method

This study will utilize the general sampling technique. This sampling technique

assures that every member of the population have the same opportunity to be in the

sample (Burns, 2002).

Proposed Intervention

To address if there will be problems the level of the research capabilities of the

respondents, the researcher will propose a Senior High Enhanced Research Program

(SHERP) to help the respondents of the study to improve their research capabilities

.The program will include activities that will give opportunity for the respondents to cope
RESEARCH CAPABILITIES OF GRADE 12 LEARNERS

DIVISION OF PAMPANGA
up with the weaknesses as researchers. The researcher will group the students according

to the level of their capabilities and be given tutorial after the class hours within a week.

The SHERP will give opportunities for an extended learning in particular research

capabilities the respondents want to enhance for a better quality research output at the end

of the semester.

Instruments

In doing the study, the researcher will employ the survey questionnaire as the

main tool. However, this will be supplemented by unstructured interviews.

The personally made survey questionnaire is the main instrument in the data

gathering of the study. The survey questionnaire for the student-respondents will gather

data about profile of the participants. It will also include the level of research capabilities

of the student-respondents.

The factors that were considered in including these variables were taken from

the related literature, the unstructured interview, and personal involvement of the

researcher.

On the other hand, the unstructured interview will be employed to validate the

responses of the participants and to elicit other information not revealed by the survey

questionnaires.

Form 138 or Individual Report Card of the researcher will also be used to gather

information on the learners’ academic performance in English and Research Subject

during their Grade 11.

RESEARCH CAPABILITIES OF GRADE 12 LEARNERS

DIVISION OF PAMPANGA
To ensure that the survey questionnaire will bring out the needed data, it will be

subjected to content validation. Well-experienced research advocates will be consulted

for comments and suggestions to improve the survey questionnaire. A validated

questionnaire on research capabilities will be used as a reference for the construction of

the questionnaire. To determine the limitations and constraints that may possibly be

encountered in the final administration of the survey questionnaire, the researcher will

administer pre-testing to thirty (30) Grade 11 learners who will not be part of the

current study.

Data Collection Procedure

The researcher will utilize an organized and systematic flow in the conduct of the

research undertaking. Permission will be asked from and granted by school authorities

such as the school head and the supervisor of the research committee through a letter of

request prior to the actual conduct of the study to the participants.

The researcher will personally administer the floating of the survey questionnaire.

To ensure that the survey elicits sincere and honest responses, the researcher will

give a comprehensive orientation to the participants before they were asked to

accomplish the questionnaire. Instructions included objectives of the study, the

significance of the generous assistance the participants will offer to the researcher,

assurance that utmost confidentiality will be observed, directions in answering, allowing

the participants to ask questions if there are any, and provision of enough time to answer

all items. Unstructured interviews will also be conducted among the participants when
RESEARCH CAPABILITIES OF GRADE 12 LEARNERS

DIVISION OF PAMPANGA
the researcher deemed it necessary to supplement data. Observations of the learning

environment will also be done to substantiate findings gathered through the instrument.

Lastly, the researcher will personally retrieve all the accomplished survey

questionnaires. After retrieving the questionnaires, the researcher will do the tallying and

computation. The assistance of the expert statistician will be sought for the interpretation

and analysis of the data gathered.

Ethical Considerations

The student-respondents of the study will be assured that all proceedings would

be treated with utmost respect and confidentiality. In the survey questionnaires, putting

the name of the participants is optional.

Data Analysis

The following statistical tools will be utilized in the analysis and interpretation of

the data gathered:

1. Frequency Tally and Percentage. This statistical tool will be employed to

categorize the responses of the student- respondents in each specific question

reflected in the survey questionnaire.

Formula: P = ( f/n) 100%

Where: P= percentage

f=frequency

n=total number of respondents

RESEARCH CAPABILITIES OF GRADE 12 LEARNERS

DIVISION OF PAMPANGA

2. Mean. This refers to the average of the sum of the observed values divided by the

number of observations (Subong & Beldia, 2005). This will be used to categorize

and supplement the responses of the student- respondents on the assessment on

the level of research capabilities.

Formula: M= ∑fx / n

Where: M= mean

∑ = (sigma) summation

fx = product of the frequency and the weight of the

summative

n=total number of participants

3. Norms for Interpretation. In the proper interpretation of the results of the

computations, the following norms for interpretation was utilized:

3.1 Likert Scale: This will be employed to categorize the level of research

capabilities of the student-respondents using the five –point scale value.

The 5-point Likert Scale model will be used to measure the respondents’

responses on the assessment of their level of research capabilities.

4.Test of Difference. The t –test assesses whether the means of two groups

are statistically different from each other. This analysis is appropriate to compare

the means of two groups (http:www.socialresearchmethods.net/kb/stat_t.php).

The t-test is probably the most commonly used statistical data analysis procedure for

hypothesis testing. There are several kinds of t-tests but the most common is the “two-

sample t-test” also known as “Student’s t- test” or the “independent samples t-test”

(Creech,2013).Retrievedfrom http://www.statisticallysignificantconsulting.com/Ttest.htm
