Risk of developing gestational diabetes mellitus: a meta-analysis

Introduction:

This study talks about how progestogen supplement prevent preterm birth and risk of developing gestational
diabetes mellitus. We all know that progesterone is a hormone that inhibits the uterus from contracting and involved in
maintaining pregnancy, especially early in gestation. Based on the journal that I have read, taking Progestogen
supplementation during pregnancy can reduce the risk of preterm birth, may increase the risk for developing gestational
diabetes mellitus and reducing infant mortality and disabilities caused by prematurity.

Procedure:

The role of progesterone is in both pregnant and non-pregnant woman. This studies were included the present
meta-analysis that recruited 80885 women. Woman who received vaginal progesterone had a decreased risk. The meta-
analysis revealed that woman who received (17-alpha hydroxyprogesterone caproate) had increased the risk of developing
gestational diabetes mellitus.

Findings/Conclusions

The results of the meta-analysis indicate that woman who receives Progestogen supplemental (17-alpha
hydroxyprogesterone caproate) for the prevention of preterm birth has an increased risk of developing gestational diabetes
mellitus.

Personal Comment:

For me this supplement can help many women to prevent preterm birth. Progesterone helps to regulate the cycle
and the main job of this is to get the uterus ready for pregnancy.
