Integration, Intensive, Diversification and Defensive strategies.

Among different types of corporate level strategies, IMS has followed

diversification strategy to expand its operations by adding markets and services to
the existing business. Diversification strategies involve concentric, horizontal and
conglomerate diversification, among which the company is using concentric
diversification. It is because the company is adding new but related services in its
business line. The stock market industry has slow growth in the country. In order to
capture the untapped area of the industry, IMS is adding new but related services. In
addition to Sharesanar.com, which provides complete financial information to the
investors, the company has added merchant bank namely, Aakash capital, providing
brokerage services through a broker Creative Securities and conducting training
services (both fundamental and technical) for its individual and corporate customers.
From these diversifications, the company is benefiting through transferring of core

competition.

Likewise, the company in order to maintain competitive position in the

Among these various strategies, IMS is following differentiation strategy as

investors, portfolio managers, students, etc. The company has differentiated itself
with ShareSansar.com the most dependable financial web platform for all financial

CHAPTER 3: REFLECTION OF INTERNSHIP

Internship is the period where an intern not only gets to experience the work
culture and environment in an organization but also gets to expand their horizon of
knowledge. While joining the team of IMS, I had expected to enhance on my
academic knowledge while working directly with the team that is working on the
financial horizon from half a decade. Also, I was willing to contribute the best of
my abilities to the team and company. I was working under the supervision of Mr.
Sandeep Bikram Rana, managing director of the company. He is one of the well-
known subject matter expert in financial sector. Working under his supervision, I got
to broaden my knowledge relating to the banking as well as other financial sectors.

The working environment of the company was very different from the one I
last worked with. My previous company was large IT company in Bangalore, which
means there was clear hierarchy and procedures that I needed to follow. Everything
was systematic and was bureaucratic. However, in IMS the working environment of
the company was very friendly. It was mostly like a start-up set up. As the company
was small in size, the flow of information was direct among the employees and top
level people. The top level executives, i.e. MDs, directly interacted with the
employees and assisted in the work by directly visiting their workstations.
Employees could even approach the directors in their cabins and take advice from
them. There was high respect for each other’s work and appreciation was given
where it is due.

During internship, as aforementioned, I was given three major tasks. First,

during the data transcription I got opportunity to get familiar with various heads of
financial reports across sectors like BFIs, Insurance, Hotels, Mutual funds and alike.
Understanding each heading was helpful in analyzing company’s performance.
Academic knowledge was helpful in performing the analysis. The indicators
analyzed were Reserves, operating profit, net profit, EPS, net worth, price earnings
ratio, dividend capacity of major companies.
The internship period was not only helpful in recalling the financial concepts
but also in understanding the capital market better. Being a naïve investor myself, I
was keen to learn about the market from a much deeper sense. During the tenure, I
got to observe the market movement and how each information that floats in the
market affects the investors’ perception. Drafting some stories regarding the
performance of stock market has also increase my interest towards the Nepali capital
market. I also used to interact with the employees of IMS regarding the market
performance and discuss which stocks are good to buy and which are a good sell
options. I also helped few workmates understand how NEPSE Trade Management
System (TMS) works.

In addition to developing my financial knowledge and market skills, I also

developed my interpersonal skills. Frequent interaction with employees and MDs of
the company boosted up my confidence to put forward my ideas during interactions.
Also being involved in communication with potential customers of SS Pro software, I
learnt to influence people and persuade them.

To conclude I can say that this internship at IMS has helped me grow
personally and professionally. I was able to enhance my personal, academic and
professional skills. The main thing I need to work out is boosting my confidence
level and I believe that with time and more experience I will achieve that too.
