needs
Standard 2.6 → Employing classroom routines, procedures, norms,
and supports for positive behavior to ensure a climate in which all
students can learn

Accomodations Visuals with written words, guided practice (SMART board),

repetition, variety of learning modalities (kinesthetic, auditory, and
visual)

Materials - Inquiry charts

2

- Realia table (pumpkin seeds, pulp, shell, pumpkin flesh,

pumpkin blossom, pumpkin vine, photo of pumpkin leaf)
- Pictorial input chart (pumpkin life cycle with labels?)
- Non-fiction books→ Pumpkin Circle (lesson opening) and
Pumpkin Jack (lesson closing)
- Sentence strips
- Scissors
- Glue
- Crayons
- Life-Cycle worksheet

Procedure (Steps) 1. Students will be seated on the carpet (whole class

instruction). Teacher will pick two scouts (these students
direct instruction, guided are looking for students who are being respectful learners
instruction, and and are also learning too!) Teacher will read aloud
independent practice Pumpkin Circle book
2. Teacher will review realia table with students and have
them say what each part of the pumpkin is (review from
prior lessons)
3. Students will create “Pumpkin Life-Cycle Chart” (whole
class/carpet)
4. Teacher will pick a number of students to help place the
labels where they belong on the chart (student
participation)
5. Students will be dismissed to their tables
6. Students will number and color the pictures→ guided
instruction
7. Students will put their materials away and teacher will
model cut and paste onto sentence strip to create the
life-cycle of a pumpkin
8. Students will independently cut and assemble their pieces
onto their sentence strip. Students can reference the
“Pumpkin Life-Cycle Chart” if needed during independent
practice. (During this time teacher will be monitoring
student work and be taking anecdotal notes. Teacher will
also be working with a small group of students who need
extra support, if necessary)
9. When students are done they can check their work and
label each step of the pumpkin cycle to extend their
learning. Students will also have the opportunity to tape
their sentence strip together so they can see how the cycle
keeps on going.

Closure After students are done with their Pumpkin Cycle they will return
